Detective Paul

He watched his daughter from the front mirror. She sat on the back seat her eyes were feasting on the trees that seemed to rush past them. Paul smiled thinking about how the interaction between Becka and Angel had been. It was like they were sisters. He wished deep inside that this was a good sign for him and Dorcas.

“You enjoyed being at the hospital.” Paul said to her daughter casually glancing at the mirror.

“Yeah, she is so beautiful even with her hair cut off and she is soo kind.”

“Not more than my Angel.”

Paul looked at the mirror again and he caught the side smile her daughter gave to that comment. Angel was unlike both of her parents . She had her mother’s looks but nothing of her behaviour. She idolized her father’s career, he knew she would do something in line with law and justice when she grew up.

“What’s wrong with her sister?” Angel asked.

“Whose sister?”

“Becka’s sister, she seemed unhappy that Becka was awake.”

“Who are you talking about?” Paul asked not understanding her daughter.

“The girl that walked out, she… ” Before she could finish the sentence her dad interrupted.

“Oh Stacy, she is probably upset that Becka is awake and Ian still cares about her. She is kind of in love with Ian.”

“She is just mean, I would be happy if my enemy woke up from a coma, nobody deserves that.”

“Honey things aren’t that easy when you are an adult, you will know once you fall in love.”

“Maybe.” She said while shrugging her shoulders.

Paul laughed. 

“But she is not her sister, Becka is an only child.” He said to Angel.

“I don’t know, I just got the vibe that they were sisters.”

“They have been friends for quite a while but are not sisters.”

They both fell back into their silent thoughts

. Paul tried comparing Stacy and Becka, he couldn’t see any semblance. He brushed it off and continued driving. He however had a task ahead. He had to continue with the investigation without endangering her daughter’s life. Being threatened like that meant one thing, he had given the killer sweaty palms. He just did not know who Maribel was disguised as. Or maybe she was collaborating with one of Becka’s closest friend. That would make it even much harder to connect her with the crimes.

Kim

“Are you okay?” Cindy asked.

“Yeah, why?” 

“You just passed the grocery store.” Cindy told him.

“Oh shoot!” Kim said stopping the car meters away and finding a place to park it.  He could not reverse the car, he would have to go to the roundabout again in order to pack in front of the store. That would take a lot of time.

“Here, give me your list and I will do the shopping.”

“It’s okay I will go, I could use the walk.” Cindy turned down his offer.

“You sure?”

“Yes I am sure.”

“I am coming with.” Giovanni said.

Kim watched them from the side mirror of the car as they crossed the road. In front of the store was a huge Jacaranda tree, tall but not taller than the building. It was different but merged well with the architecture of the place. As Cindy and Giovanni momentarily got blocked by the tree before they re-emerged, a memory bolt shot in his head.

He was at the cemetery. They were all headed to the car that would drive them home after performing the final burial rights for her mom. He was holding Giovanni’s hand and he had turned to give his mum’s grave a final look. That’s when she saw her emerging from behind the trees. He tried focusing to see whose face it was but he could not make it out. She went ahead to the grave and threw a red rose inside, laughter written all over her mouth. She was laughing as if happy that it had happened.

“Kim get in the car.” He turned to his father who was waiting for him to get inside.

Immediately he got inside he turned her gaze back to the grave site.

 She was gone, 

Kim got out of the trance. He remembered that day. It’s like he had buried the memory deep inside not wanting to uncover it. Thinking of that lady made fear crawl down his spine. It must be important, he thought.

. Why was it coming up at this juncture? Over two years had passed. After that statement Becka made, his mind had not settled down. He remembered how Becka had tensed up when the others entered the room. How she had been quick to forgive the guys even though they had not been there for her? Could it be that the killer was among his friends? Paul had given him hopes on the Maribel’s lead but it seems like it was now a cold trail. It didn’t make sense that any of these people would want to kill Antonina.

He took his phone and dialed detective Paul’s number.

“Hello detective.”

“Kim, how can I help you?”

“I called to ask if there are any leads on Becka’s case.”

“So far nothing but am still going on with the investigation. You have something in mind?”

“I think … I don’t know… I mean I remember a woman...girl maybe being at my mother’s funeral and she was laughing. I just can’t seem to remember her face. I feel it’s important.”

“The laughter part is weird but I cannot see how it’s related to this case, but if you remember anything don’t hold it back.” Paul said.

“Becka told me something very strange at the hospital.”

“What did she say?” Paul asked.

“Something out the killer being much close. It’s like she knows who it is.”

“She said that?” Detective Paul asked recalling the conversation he had with her daughter earlier in the vehicle.

“Hold on a second.” Kim said seeing Cindy coming with a basket loaded with groceries. Giovanni was by her side. She looked like she needed help.

“I am going to have to call you later.” Kim said while hanging up the phone in the process.
