Detective Paul

It was midnight. He had been forced to call for the sitter’s services because he couldn’t risk another kidnapping episode. Nick had called
him earlier telling him he had gotten in contact with Cassie though Maribel still had the car. He hoped that the GPS was still enabled. He entered the police station and opened the office then went direct to his technician’s desk . He pressed the on button and typed his ID then opened the tracking app.

Unfortunately, the tracking device was disabled. He leaned back on the chair. The last recorded location was River side estate, just where Nick was to pick Cassie from. He stood up and saw his phone calling. It was Kim.

“Hello Kim.”

“Hello, is that the detective?” He heard a distraught female voice asking.

“Yeah, this is Detective Paul, where is Kim? And why do you have his phone?”

“Detective Kim is… I think Kim is missing.” The lady said her voice getting too emotional.

“Missing? Who are you?”

“Am the house help, Cindy.”

“Okay Cindy am on my way there now.” He assured him.

He ran out of the office and got into his car then drove off at a neck breaking speed to the Karugu’s mansion. The maid was waiting for him, a helpless look covering her face.

“Detective come on inside.” Cindy welcomed him in.

He found a sleepy Giovanni sitting in one of the living room couches.

“Walk me through what happened.” Paul commanded.

“It’s better if I show you.”

She mounted the stairs and detective Paul followed closely

. They found Kim’s room a jar. The window was open and there was a ladder in the side. His bed sheets were carelessly covering the bed like he had gotten off it in a hurry.

“How did you discover he was missing? It’s kind of late.”

“I was doing laundry and we normally prefer air drying the clothes. I had left the clothes and went to rest after setting an alarm to wake me up so that I could air dry them. The alarm rang and I went to get the clothes. I had noticed the door was open but when I got back and saw it still open I felt something was a bit off. So I decided to investigate. The sheets were a mess, the window was open and this I the strangest part.” She said walking out of the room and pointing towards a passage that would be otherwise invisible to a guest of the house.

“What about this?” Detective Paul asked.

“It’s open, we never use it.” She responded pushing the passage open. “The door on the other end is also open. Someone followed it.”

He saw the sense in what Cindy was saying. It was safe to assume that Maribel was behind all of this.

“What of the phone?”

“I found it lying on top of the bed, he had been trying to call you when this happened I suppose.” She said handing the phone to the detective.

“Am going to need you to come down the station with me.”

“I understand.” Cindy said politely.

“I will have to get a jacket for Giovanni.”

The detective got out

Five minutes later, Cindy emerged holding Giovani’s hand. They all got into detective Paul’s car and left for the station. Giovani slept off immediately. As they continue Paul started interrogating Cindy again.

“You say that passage was never used before?” He asked.

“Yeah, Mr. Karugu senior forbids it. We are never allowed even to look at it. I think it’s because he doesn’t want his sons sneaking out going to raves and all.”

“It true it’s strange that Kim door was open and lights on, why did you assume immediately that something was wrong. He could have been in the kitchen fetching some juice for himself.”

“Detective I have been with this family for over two years now, I know them well. Kim more times than counted sleeps without his supper. He has never in the history of my work here rose up to take anything in the kitchen. That door ajar like that in the middle of the night just set off alarms inside of me. I had to go check on him.”

“Is it possible that maybe he just went out to have a drink and all.”

“I don’t think so. He doesn’t need to sneak out.”

“Maybe he was afraid of his parent.”

“His father is not around, for some reason unknown to me Kim hates the party life with passion. He just never goes out at night unless to see his girls.” Cindy said.

“His girls?”

“Becka and the late Antonina.”

“You knew them well.”

“I guess I could say that. They stayed together a lot. The whole circle of friends. Sometimes they would come here and spend the whole day doing random stuff. I would serve then so I definitely saw a lot of stuff going on with them.”

“How did you come to find about Becka and Kim?”

“Three weeks before Tony was killed, they were at the house, Karugu’s mansion. Becka was helping me carry snacks to where they were seated outside the pool. I delayed a minute in the kitchen while Becka left with her tray. When I got to it I found Becka and Kim arguing in the hallway. They couldn’t see me coming so I heard a huge chunk of their conversation.”

“What were they arguing about?”

“Becka wanted Kim to go tell Tony about them.”

“Just that?”

“Yeah it was a lot of words with one refrain.”
“Alright, we are here. Am just going to need to record a statement from you. You must understand for an adult, he has to be missing for twenty four hour for a full investigation to be launched.”

“Kim doesn’t have much time.” Cindy said.

. “From the condition of his room and all, my gut says we need to act quickly.”

“We will do everything we come to get your Kim.”

Cindy burst into an embarrassment laughter.

“What’s funny?” The detective asked as they got into the station.

“The way you said my Kim, like he belonged to me.”

“Oh! I see.”

Nick stood with Cassie at the entrance of the office. They were standing in a hugging manner most probably because of the cold. Giovanni on the other hand was sleep walking.

“Nick you are here, what’s the matter?”

“We came to report a stolen car detective.”

“Stolen? How?”

“Carjacking.” Cassie said.

“I have to talk to this young lady, a possible case of kidnap.” Paul told Nick and Cassie.

“Oh, am so sorry I hope you find him, maybe that he took a walk… or her.” Cassie said and broke into a nervous small laugh.

“Yeah thanks, I hope so too. I am Cindy by the way.”

“Cassie and this is my boyfriend Nick. We here to report a kidnapped car.” Nervous laughter from Cassie followed. “Stolen car, of course nothing compared to the gravity of yours.”

“Shall we?” The detective asked.

“Of course.” They all responded.

Cassie was definitely hiding something. Both the detective and her boyfriend noted how she sounded so weird.

“Let’s start with your statement Cindy, then I will come back to you guys.”

He opened his office door and Cindy walked in with Giovanni. This young man loved his sleep.

“Let him rest on that couch.” Paul said pointing at a comfortable along the left wall of the office. Three minutes later he was peacefully snoring.

“Let’s go over everything you told me about tonight.”
