Dorcas

She had been warned. Whether it had been a good idea to meet Abigael the other woman or not she couldn’t tell. What was done was done. She could not keep away from Paul anymore. She needed to see him and have a small talk with him. Hopefully he would lift up the down-casted mood she was wallowing in.

Parking on the guest area in the police station, she got of her car and went inside the station. Luckily for her, Paul was inside his office alone . She gently rapped on the door and opened it without waiting for a response. Paul whose head had been bowed keenly reading his notebook lifted up his head and gave her a wide smile. It was without doubt he was happy to see her.

He met her halfway and immediately pulled her into a hug, resting his chin upon the hairs of her head.

“I missed you.” He said.

Dorcas did not respond but enjoyed the much warmth she so needed from the hug.

After a while, he released her and they both settled on the seat. From where Dorcas sat she could see what was written on the notebook that Paul had been concentrating on when she walked in. What she saw made her heart leap. She grabbed the note book and read it loudly.

“Maggie Musyoka!” She exclaimed

Paul who was perplexed by Dorcas’ behaviour gently took the notebook from her hands and asked.

“You know a Maggie Musyoka?”

“I use to know one, it just a weird coincidence that your notebook has the exact same name.” Dorcas responded.

It could be a coincidence but he had to know more of this Maggie Musyoka that Dorcas knew.

“Tell me more about her.” He encouraged Dorcas.

“Wow, it’s so strange that I have been thinking about her all through my escapades with Christopher.”

“Why was he an ex?” Paul inquired expectantly.

Dorcas nodded.

“You could say that. She was also my best friend

. The only one who was not intimidated by my parents’ wealth.” Dorcas said.

“What happened between her and Chris?”

“Apparently they had a thing going on before he started dating me. I wasn’t aware of that. She kept warning me against dating Chris. I thought she was looking out for me but I soon realized it was because she loved him. It was immediately after graduation. She came to my place and told me to stay away from Chris. I wished I listened.”

“Did you confront Chris about it?”

“Yeah I did, he did not deny the fact that they had dated and he told me it had been long over before we started dating. I believed him. Ever since I haven’t set my eyes upon Maggie.”

Dorcas stopped only to realize all this while Paul had been writing on his notebook.

“Wait, is Maggie Musyoka related to Becka’s case?” Dorcas asked almost snatching Paul’s notebook the second time.

“Maybe.” Paul responded in a cool tone.

“Tell me.” Dorcas said insistently.

“Is she still alive, where does she live, I want to go see if it’s really her.” Dorcas said her eyes beaming with expectations.

“No you can’t see her because she is dead.”

“What! Maybe it not the Maggie Musyoka I know.” Dorcas said trying not to think that such fate as death had befallen her used to be best friend.

“Baby girl.” Paul said.

“Yes.” Dorcas responded. “Wait did you just call me... baby?”

“Yes I did.” Paul said. “Baby girl I believe it’s the same person. It’s too much of a coincidence.”

“But how, I mean if she is dead how can she be connected to all of this?”

“She isn’t but her daughter is.”

“She had a daughter? Of course she had a child, she obviously got someone better and tied the knot.”

“She had twin daughters who should be twenty years old now. She was never married.” Paul said.

“Twenty years old?” Dorcas said in disbelief while reality slowly hit her.

“They can’t be Christopher’s kids, I mean are they?”

“I can’t say for sure till we run a DNA test, but am certain they are, though one of the twins succumbed to blood cancer two years ago.”

“That must been awful for the other twin, losing the mother and the sister.”

Detective Paul nodded.

“It might have led her to seek revenge on Chris for abandoning their mother.”

“But its Antonina that was killed not Becka,”

“Yea, my theory is that the girl came across Kim in a party and grew attached to him. She fell in love only to realize that Antonina was standing in the way so she took her out.”

“That’s some crazy stuff.” Dorcas said.

“Tell me about it.”

They fell into silence. Dorcas stayed wide eyed staring at the detective wondering if this all could be true or just a theory.

“You know that story you just told me is super crazy.” Dorcas insisted.

“I know.” Paul said.

His phone rang and he picked it up from his desk. Dorcas fumbled with her handbag trying to locate her phone. She was brought to a stop when the detective shouted while he stood from his chair.

“What! What do you mean my daughter is missing?”

“How can a child go missing under your watch? You are supposed to take care of her!” He screamed.

Dorcas stood from her chair and rushed beside him and gently took the phone from him.

“For how long has she been missing?”

“Twenty minutes.” The female voice on the other end responded

“What was she doing when she was last seen?” Dorcas continued with the line of inquiry.

“It was tea break, she left her friends to go respond to call of nature. When the break ended she did not come back to class, she hasn’t been to the school nurse. We have searched everywhere. We have even called her sitter who sometimes pick her up at school, no one has seen her.”

“Okay, am going to hang up now but keep me posted on anything you think might be important.” Dorcas ordered.

“Okay.” The other voice responded.

Paul was out of the room. She could hear him backing orders to the other police men in the station. It was a kid missing. They had to act fast.

. Minutes later he came back. He took his gun and load it.

“Stay here.” He ordered Dorcas.

“If you think am going to stay here while you outside there searching, you are crazy.” Dorcas said defiantly.

The detective said loudly.

“My daughter is missing and I don’t want anything happening to you.”

“I will be with you, am going.” Dorcas repeated.

“Let’s go then.”

They left the station in a hurry, not knowing where to begin but having hope that at the end of the day all would be well.

Dusk was fast approaching.

Nothing had penned out on Angel’s where about. They had gone back and forth between the sitter and Paul’s house. No clues as to why she was taken or where she was taken. Dorcas sat looking at Paul who had his head in his hand.

“This is my fault.” He repeatedly said.

“How is it your fault?” Dorcas finally managed to ask.

“I should have been there protecting her.” Paul lamented.

“You wanted to be your daughters’ body guard at school?”

Paul looked at her without answering.

Dorcas opened the door and got out of the car. She went round to his side of the car and opened it.

“Get out and go to the other side.” She ordered him.

Paul got out and did as he was told.

Silence reigned for a minute.

“We have done everything except one.” Dorcas said.

“One, which one? “ Paul asked his face lighting up with hope.

“Prayer.” Dorcas said.

Immediately she mentioned prayer, Paul’s face fell.

“Come on now, do you know where Angel is right now?” Dorcas asked him.

“No.”

“Do you know whether she is safe?” She asked him

“No.”

“There is someone who knows where she is, if she is safe and has the capability of returning her to you safely.”

He swallowed hard.

“So, shall we?” Dorcas asked opening her palms and letting Paul hold them.

She led the prayer.

She then turned the ignition key and drove to Paul’s place.

They were stunned with what they saw immediately the house came into view. Angel lying peacefully on the front porch. They scampered out of the car and raced towards her. Paul immediately checked for her pulse.

“She is alive, she is here!” He screamed as a demented fool.

Angel stirred up due to the noise.

“Dad!” She said then hugged him.

“Where have you been?” Both Dorcas and Paul asked simultaneously.

“She said I should give you this, for your eyes only.” Angel said bringing out a brown envelope.

Paul opened and took out an A4 sized photo of her daughter in the school playground. Her head was marked x with a marker pen.

Stop the investigation. The second time I take her, you won’t see her again.
