Dorcas

So much going on inside her. Did he actually kiss her?

Whoa! Slow down butterflies, slow down. She felt like a teenager falling in love all over again. That morning she had spent an hour on the mirror just thinking about that kiss. Nobody had warned her that falling in love again could be such electric. Nobody warned her that she would behave like a teenage girl all over again . She hadn’t seen him since that day. Things had been awkward when they got back in the car. She hoped Chris would understand. She couldn’t concentrate on two people at the same time. Her daughter was ill and right now that was her focus.

From her car she could clearly see her through the glass window as she waited for whoever her date was. She could see why Chris wanted her. She was so tall.  Chris adored tall ladies. She was lighter in complexion unlike Dorcas. She kept checking her watch. Dorcas guessed she was waiting for someone. Meeting her now could be a very bad idea. She tried talking herself out of marching into the restaurant but then decided she had come too far just to chicken out the last minute.

It was four days before the wedding.

She had to talk to her.

Finally summoning the courage, she got out of her car adjusted the belt of her trench coat then crossed over to other side of the road where the restaurant was. She got inside and quickly spotted where Abigael sat

. She made deliberate steps towards her.

“Excuse me, can I sit here?” Dorcas asked politely.

“No sorry, am actually waiting for someone.” Abigael replied trying not to be rude.

“I know Chris is running a bit late so am going to have a seat before he shows up.” Dorcas said pulling the chair opposite and making herself comfortable.

“Am sorry, who are you? And how do you know Chris?”

“Am Dorcas, Chris ex - wife.” Dorcas replied in a stern voice.

A shocked expression covered Abigael’s face. She opened her mouth to speak but again refrained from uttering a word.

“Why are you so shocked? You finally met the woman whose husband you took.” Dorcas said bringing the animosity in her while trying to keep her voice down.

“Am sorry Dorcas but I know you have been separated for two years now and that’s why I have been dating your husband.”

“Separated for two years?” Dorcas made a small fake laugh.

“Chris and I never separated in fact I was surprised a month ago when he served me with the divorce documents. At least now I know why.”

“You mean you haven’t been in a legal separation?”

“Nope.” Dorcas responded.

She watched her face as the truth sank in her.

“Look Abigael I never intended to come find you. When we got divorced Chris took money from our joint account and moved it to your account and that is how I came to know about you. I was hurt deeply. I was heart-broken when Chris left, he had been the man I fell in love with and later married. Nobody loses that and remains the same. He cheated on me severally with different women, so many lonely nights. Her daughter is lying in a coma at the hospital as we speak and he hasn’t made any effort to come and see her.”

 Dorcas paused.

“He took money from our joint account and gave it to you. Am sure he never mentioned to you where it was from. I may have loved Chris but am so glad I finally came to realize his true-self. I hope for your own sake, things will be different.”

She rose gently pulling her chair in the process.

“Congratulations and have a happy wedding.”

As she got into her car she saw Christopher’s car pulling up. It would have been dramatic if he had found her there. She watched as Abigael stood up to great him. Chris gave her a peck on the cheek and held her hand in a lingering manner. Abigael and Dorcas’ eyes met before she drove off.

Detective Paul

Women could be so weird sometimes. Two weeks and she were behaving like they barely knew each other. Did he kiss her too fast? He would totally understand if Dorcas wanted to wait till marriage because of her values. Or maybe she just didn’t like him. He was sure that wasn’t the case. From the way Dorcas had reacted she did like him a lot.

He looked at his notebook. He had circled words

The names Antonina and Becka were inscribed in huge circles. It would make sense that Maribel would want to kill Antonina since she was the known girlfriend of Kim Karugu. She had to be a psychopath though. She also must have maintained a close interaction with Kim, maybe not that close but she had to be close enough for her to feel that Antonina robbed her of her life. She also did not know that Kim was in love with Becka, not Antonina. He could be wrong with this Maribel lead but after everything Nick told him, he was sure he was angling at something.

His gut always flared at the thought of Maribel.

His gut had never failed him.

He knew Maribel’s sister was called MaryAnn and she died. He needed to know the name of their mother. From there he could figure out the connection. He brought out his phone and dialed Nick’s number.

“Hello Nick, how are you?” Paul asked once Nick had picked up the phone.

“Am good detective how may I help? Nick asked.

“Are you still in touch with Cassie?” Paul asked.

“Yea she still works with me.” He said with pride.

“Works with you or for you?” Paul asked in a joking tone.

“With me, we kind of partners now.” Nick said in a coy tone.

“Partners, I wonder what kind.” Paul said laughing.

“Any way I wanted to talk to her, do you think she knows Maribel’s mum?”

“She does and I also did. She had told me about her.”

Paul flipped his notebook excitement building inside him.

“What was her name?” He asked

“Maggie, Maggie Musyoka I believe.”

“Maggie Musyoka.” Paul repeated while scribbling the name on the note book.

“Thanks so much Nick, you have been of great help. Could I get Cassie’s number?” He went on inquiring.

“Yea sure anything for you detective.” Nick then went on to recite Cassie’s number while Paul jotted it down.

“Thanks again Nick you have been atone of help, if I hadn’t met you before I would suspect you leading me on. Seriously though thank you Nick.”

“Welcome detective, you mentioned a girl was dead and another in a comma, I sort of felt attached because most cateresses in my company are girls who I couched from a very young age. If something like this happens to one of them God forbid, I would want justice.”

“Alright Nick, have a blessed day am sure your partner is missing you.” The detective said putting an emphasis on the word partner.

“Alright, bye.” Nick responded before hanging up the phone.

Nick

Maribel’s laughter kept ringing on his head though two years had passed. Not that he was still stuck on her, no. He had everything he had ever dreamt of. A loving girlfriend and a successful catering company.

That laughter could only be from a crooked soul. He had done everything within his means to make sure Maribel and Cassie got on a comfortable paying job. If given a chance he would have treated Maribel like a queen.

He was a gentle man. Maribel could have just told him she wasn’t interested in him as he was. Instead, she laughed on his face. Stole an id and hit his arm with a hammer before kicking his balls. If Maribel had succeeded in getting her father, that man must be dead by now. The events of that day had been an eye opener. Maribel was a full blown egotistic psychopath.

“Babe are you okay?” Cassie interrupted his train of thoughts.

“Oh nothing, just thinking about stuff.”

“Who were you on the phone with?”

“Oh the detective, he was asking about Maribel’s mum.” Nick explained to her girlfriend.

“Such a shame. Am not surprised though.”

“Yea, we were never enough for her.” Nick said while putting Cassie on his lap.

“I can’t complain because I got this puppy eyes on me now.” Cassie said holding Nick’s chin while he stared deeply into his eyes.

“I love you.” Nick said.

“Me more.” Cassie replied.

“I got some cooking going over in the kitchen, will be right back.” Cassie stood from Nick’s lap and disappeared into the next room.

Cassie

She tapped her nails impatiently on top of the sink. This was the third time she was ringing Maribel’s number.

“Damn it, pick up this thing.” She said in a frustrated tone.

She dialed the number again and when she did not pick up for the fourth time she placed the phone aside and continued with chopping up the vegetables. A few minutes passed before Maribel called back.

. She picked up the phone hastily.

“Girl you are blowing my phone.” Maribel said in a relaxed tone on the other side.

“You told me you had given up the search of your dad. After six months of trying.” Cassie started off immediately.

“Yes I did.” Maribel said on the other end. “Why are you acting so weird? What’s wrong? What has happened?”

“Two weeks ago a detective showed up at Nick’s asking for you in connection to a murder case, today he called Nick asking for your mum’s name.” Cassie said hastily.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” Maribel asked her voice still calm.

“It doesn’t matter, do you have anything to do with that girls’ murder?”

“What? Maribel you know me, I wouldn’t kill anyone am not a murderer plus I already told you. I gave up the search of my dad for revenge. It took me a while but I finally heeded to Mary Ann’s advice. Revenge was not the way.”

“You need to go to that detective and clear your name, he is investigating you meaning he has some suspicion about you. Baby girl I told you rich boys are trouble. Why does your name have to appear in this case? What are you involved in? Just tell me I am your friend and I will help you as always.”

“Cassie I don’t know why this detective is looking for me and am not involved with any rich boy at the moment. I swear to you I haven’t done anything I shouldn’t be doing in a long time now.” Maribel re-assured Cassie.

“Alright Maribel take care of yourself.” Cassie concluded.

“Okay I will do that, mum.” Maribel responded.

They both burst into fits of laughter.

“Come on now, bye.”

“Bye.”
