Detective Paul

Too fast.

This was happening too fast, he said. All over again like it had happened with Eva. Stupid heart of mine why are you falling in love all over again. Haven’t you been screwed over too many times to learn? He had tried dating when Eva left after time had passed. They ended up in such a huge mess . Why would this hold?

Packing in front of the house number 27 he stepped out of the car. There were similar houses in the area. They had been built for civil servants back in the days when the country just got independence but had been left because they had built better housing for them. Now normal citizen rented them. He lightly rapped at the door.

A well built guy opened the door, he had dread locks that were tied in a burn. 

“Can I help you?”

“Yes am looking for Nick and I was hoping we could talk about his catering company.”

At the mention of his catering company his already tensed face relaxed a bit.

“Sure am Nick, come in.”

Paul entered into the house. It was neatly arranged and the house decors were amazing. It was hard to picture the outside when you were outside.

“Nice home you got here.” Paul commented clearly impressed.

“We try.” Nick responded politely.

“Am here on police business, I just want information and someone tipped me that you might know the one am looking for.” Paul said keenly studying his features.

“I thought you were here to ask us to cater in a party.”

“No am sorry.”

“What do you want to know?”

“I am looking for a girl named Maribel, she worked with you at a party two years back.”

At the mention of Maribel, Nick’s demeanor changed. He rose up from his seat and headed for the door.

“Unless am under arrest here am going to ask you to leave my house.” He said while holding the door wide open.

“Nick the girl I am looking for may have committed a murder and implicated someone who is currently lying in a hospital bed in comma and probably will die

. Are you willing to withhold information that may ensure justice for these two?” Paul tried appealing to his conscience.

“It’s none of my business, just leave.”

Without a word Paul rose and left the house a feeling of defeat slowly crawling inside of him. He got in the car but didn’t start it. He needed a way to convince Nick to give him the information he needed without force. That was the only way he could get the right information. He saw Nick closing the door then approaching the car. He waited. Nick knocked at his on the driver window panes. Paul rolled down the window.

“You know pulling the conscience card isn’t fair at all.” Nick while joining Paul in the car. 

“I ran out of cards.” Paul said smiling while starting the ignition.

He drove into the main rode and soon they were on the highway leading to town.

“I met Maribel at a restaurant in town, I used to frequent that place and she was one of the waiters. Sometimes I would start small conversation with her, she was one beautiful girl and I just felt the need to know what her story was. She was an orphan, never knew her father and her only sister succumbed to cancer during that period.”

“Tragic.” Paul said meaning every word.

“Tragic indeed.” Nick affirmed.

“I had started my catering company at this point and when I got my first ever job I proposed the idea of working with her and one of her friend Cassie…I believe that was her name. We did the first job and they were satisfied with the pay so they agreed to continue. But Maribel wanted a different job.”

“What did she want?”

“To work as a stripper.”

“What? Why?”

“Apparently he had traced the father she believed had abandoned them and she believed he was a frequenter at one of those strip clubs.”

“That’s just nasty to think off. What kind of revenge plan would that be?” Paul asked him.

“I don’t know. She asked me to hook her up with one of my friends who owned the club but I refused.”

“Was that out of the goodness of your heart or?” The detective asked.

“I had fallen in love with her and I knew the strip club way wasn’t what I would want for her or any of my girls for that matter.”

“I bet she didn’t take the news well.”

“You guessed right. She was like a wounded lion.

. She scare the hell out of me. I ended up telling her how I felt about her and that I would take care of her with the business I was running.”

Nick felt silent and swallowed hard.

“What did she say?”

“She just laughed at my face.”

They fell into silent. Paul replayed the scene in his mind. Must have hurt.

“What happened after?”

“The rule of the strip club is that all the girls had to be twenty one and above but Maribel wasn’t. Unfortunately at the time I was holding some fake id’s for the guy who owned the strip club. She saw them and tried grabbing one.”

“What did you do?”

“I tried stopping her but she grab a hammer that I had been using on making other stuff and slammed it on my fingers. She then kicked my balls and left with one of the id in her hands. I was in too much pain to stop her. Never seen her since.”

“You have any idea of the name that is on the fake idea.”

“No, not really but I bet she is using it now,”

“Do you think Cassie would know where she went?”

“No, not really she was clueless even more than I was.”

They reached the town center. They were almost nearing the place where Nick would alight.

“Just check with any agency that deals with catering and such like stuff. It would have helped if you had a suspect maybe you could look into their past”

“Good idea, I will try that.” Detective Paul before bringing the car into a halt for Nick to alight.
