They went there thirty minutes early. It’s always best to familiarize oneself with the surroundings especially when you didn’t know what to expect.

Ian, Stacy, Lucy and Becka stood at one spot talking in low tones. Uncertainty and fear of the unknown clearly written on their faces. Cassie sat in the car, her hands cuffed . Mr. Karugu sat in his own car with his youngest son tapping his feet trying not to go mad. After losing his wife two years ago, he was not ready to lose his eldest son. He wasn’t just ready to bury another person. It would destroy him. It would destroy Giovanni.

Dorcas too was in her car. Just at the bonnet area the teens stood. They had ridden with her to this place. Nick had ridden with Det. Paul. He felt sympathy for that guy. It would take a while for him to get back to the dating scene.

And against Maribel’s request, a police squad was lying in wait. Some had camouflaged behind the huge rocks in the stone park while others were just 5 minutes away. 

Lucy stared at her friend Becka.

“How is it like, being in a coma?” Lucy asked.

“Nothing interesting, I was in some sort of grey zone for the longest time, trapped and all then suddenly I was not, and am glad to be back.” Becka said.

“We are glad to have you back Becka.” Ian said brushing his arm.

“You know you never told us what happened the day Antonina died.” Lucy continued.

“Lucy!” Ian reprimanded sharply.

“It’s okay if you don’t want to talk about it.” Ian said.

“Am sorry.” Lucy apologized “I should be more sensitive.”

“Guys it okay, sooner or later I will have to talk about it anyway.”

 

THE AFTERNOON ANTONINA DIED

Becka headed for her friend’s place. She was unsure if this was the right plan but she needed to unburden herself

. She was in love with Kim and Kim was the boyfriend to her best friend Antonina. 
Walking towards their family gate she was afraid. This was going to hurt her best friend. She had also given Kim a heads up that she would talk to Tony on this particular day. They had endless argument on what was the right thing to do. She was ready to take action because she was tired of living a lie. She wanted to be her authentic self.

She let herself in to the compound, and went on to ring the bell on the door. Tony was expecting her. An ever cheerful Tony popped her head out with Minxy and Jerry’s head also appearing below making the sight cute. 

“Hey …come on in.” Tony stated.

“Thanks but I won’t be coming in, can we talk outside?”

“Sure let me wear something more appropriate.”

While she went back in Jerry and Minxy took time narrating their sibling rivalry episodes. Minutes later Tony re-emerged. 

“Minxy and Jerry go inside.”

Grudgingly they obeyed.

“Can we go to our spot?” Becka requested.

“Yeah, is everything okay with you?” Tony asked in a sincere tone.

“Yea everything is fine.”

The walked and soon enough they were at their spot. This was a place they had discovered together back then when their friendship started. It was true, Becka and Tony were best friends apart from the group. They shared between them more than they could share with the rest of the group.  

“I wanted to come to you and tell you about this before you heard it from someone else. It has to come from me.” Becka said.

She paused then drew a deep breath.

“Am so so sorry.” She continued.

“If you are going to tell me about how you and Kim are in love, please don’t.” Tony said looking away.

Becka’s jaw dropped.

“You knew? Why didn’t you tell me you knew?”

“Of course I knew, you are my best friend and Kim is my boyfriend, nothing goes on in your life that I don’t know. Besides you are not good at keeping secrets, you nowadays have this guilty look on your face.” Tony said still looking away not wanting to look directly into her eyes. She loved her best friend but at the same time she felt betrayed by her. She had dared to fall in love with her person. 

“Tony am so sorry.” Becka said trying to hold her friends.

“No Becka, this time it’s my heart you are asking to hurt. I can’t just turn it on and off like a tap.” She said stepping away.

“Tony I will end this. I value our friendship more than anything. I love you my sister and friend.”

“He loves you… it won’t matter if you end it with him…you guys love each other and you can’t just stop loving each other.”

“Tony …”

They were interrupted by a twig breaking. They all looked and saw Cindy approaching. 

“Cindy? What are you doing here?” They all asked surprise.

“What are you doing here? This isn’t the place for princesses like you. Am here to meet a friend this is our safe haven.” Cindy said.

“That’s such a weird coincidence because this some sort of our safe haven too.” Becka said.

"So we are like soul sisters.” Cindy said smiling

“Soul sister is that a thing?” Tony asked.

“It is if we make it..” Cindy said in a fun tone.

They all laughed.

“Now that you guys are in a light mood I wanted to ask, are you guys okay ?” 

“Yea we are okay.” Becka and Tony replied. Too quickly.

“I heard you guys from a distance, I thought it was some sort of argument.”

“No we are fine.” Becka said forcing a smile but inside her she was screaming. “It’s none of your business.”

“Are you sure Tony because I heard your best-friend here telling you that she is in love with your boyfriend.”

“Cindy I think you should let us handle our business.” Tony threw yet another punch.

“No, not if you are handling it wrong.”

“Cindy am sorry but I think you should really leave and stop meddling because its irritable.”

“Guys, relax… I just want to help. I have seen you guys being best friends for two years. I don’t want to see that go away because of Kim. As sweet as he is.” Cindy said.

The tensed atmosphere that had been building up relaxed.

“Can we both have a middle ground and talk it out? Let’s start with you Becka, what would you like your fiend to know about this specifically?”  She turned to Becka and encouraged her with a nod.

“Uuum Tony, you are my best friend and I love you and envy you at the same time. You are beautiful, you got the better boyfriend., loving family. All things I have always wished for. You know everything going on with my family, when am with Kim I am at a safe space. But I am willing to let that go. Our friendship is important and I have betrayed it, I am sorry for putting myself before you.”

“Now it’s you turn.” Cindy told Antonina.

“Honestly I have nothing to say. I just feel so broken over it. You are such a strong lady blossoming amidst so much and oh my word! you are so beautiful. I just feel like we were in a competition and I am the looser and I can’t even blame him. Look at you, you are everything I want to be. I am so sorry too.” 

They all fell silent.

“How did that feel?”

“Good.” Becka said.

“Really good.” Tony added,

“You want to know what I think?”

They both nodded.

“I think you are both not willing to fight for what you want, which means you don’t even love him that much.”

Becka and Tony looked at each other confused.

“What do you mean…what?” Becka asked shaking his head.

“It’s okay, you are not willing to fight for what you love but I am.”

“That’s good, who is the luck guy?” Tony asked.

“Kim.”

Shock painted their faces.

“oooh!” They both said.

“And unfortunately you are on my way. She said looking at Becka.”

Everything happened so fast. Cindy fished out a kitchen knife and lunched towards Rebecca but Antonina came in between and she received the knife. In anger She continued to stab her while Becka who had fallen when Tony pushed her of the way watched in horror.

When she did the last stab she left the knife. 

“What have you done?” Becka screamed crawling towards her friend who was now grunting in pain.

“It was meant for you but she got in the way, but I got a better plan. You being dead is not fun, how about I watch you suffer instead?”

Becka was busy touching her friend wondering how she could stop the bleeding that was oozing out like a fountain.

“Would you please call an ambulance?” Becka begged her.

“Well I am going to call anonymously to tell them of the body but she will be gone in a few so don’t bother yourself calling for help, you know how slow they respond.”

“You monster, am going to kill you for this.”

“No you won’t, instead you going to prison for this, take the knife!” Cindy ordered.

“Am not holding that knife.”

She felt the barrel of the gun touching her forehead.

“Go ahead kill me.” Becka said.

“Are you sure about that, cause your friend disagrees.”

Amidst pain Tony was trying to talk to her.

. “Please fight this fight for me.”

Crying she pick up the blood stained knife. 

“Good girl, now you can run or you can stay and go to jail. And don’t even think about rating me out because you know what will happen.”

“Run Be.. cka…. Cough cough….”  Antonina said, now coughing blood.

“To where? I don’t have anything, besides am not leaving you here. You are a strong woman you will survive this. Let me call for help.”

“They take …cough …too… long….cough.” Tony said.

“Don’t say that am calling help.” She reached for her pocket but Tony stopped her.

“Listen to me instead….. cough”

“Take care of Kim….”

“I will…we will…” Becka said amidst tears.

“Cough …. No…Becka listen to me.”

“Eveeen nature itself favors you, I get to die,” she said smiling “Am not mad, I bless your relationship.”

Becka couldn’t say anything. She watched in pain too. 

“Am…scared…” Tony said.

“Am sure heaven is more peaceful than this place.” Becka said not sure what more to tell her friend.

“I don’t want to die and go to hell Becka.” She said much more clearly.

“We have never taken this Christian thing seriously, …”

“Becka… I want to go to heaven.”

“It’s not up to me ask Him.” Becka was now gripping her hand more tightly.

“Do you believe?” Becka asked.

Tony looked up towards the sky.

“Am breaths away from taking my last breath, I have never taken you seriously, but this is my last chance and I ask that just as you gave that thief at the cross a chance to be in paradise, forgive me my sins, accept me into paradise. I believe you are my savior now. Amen.”

“Amen.” Becka responded in a shaky voice.

“Goodbye old friend.” She said.

Then she breathed her last.
