“What she will do to me is far much worse.”

“Cassie if you don’t talk to us you still facing time, and am going to dig till I find every crime you have committed in your life time, that I promise you.” Detective Paul said.

“If I talk am dead anyway.”

Paul stared at Cassie frustrated. He had been on and off with her for thirty minutes and so far he had come out with nothing.

“Let me tell you what’s going to happen if you don’t talk, an innocent young man is going to die.”

“She loves him, it not like she is going to kill him or anything.” Cassie told the detective.

“What happens if he is not able to reciprocate the love of a psychopathic killer?” Paul asked.

Swallowing hard Cassie still kept mum . Whatever Maribel had on her was far much greater than all these threats they were throwing at her.

“You will not find her even if I talk. That means am dead anyway.” Cassie said.

Sighing the detective leaned back on his chair.

Lucy head popped in the doorway.

“I got something.” She said.

Paul stepped out while Ian walked in to keep an eye to the only lead they had for the case. Becka also stepped in

. They sat in eerie silence for a while till Ian stood up and moved close to where Becka was sitting.

“Am sorry Becka.”

“Don’t be, none of this is your fault Ian.”

“But still am sorry, for everything, am sorry that you had to go through this alone, I was such a crappy boyfriend. I was not there for you when you needed me the most. I regret with the whole of my heart.”

“Don’t sweat it. I made mistakes too and am sorry too. Life has given me a new shot and I can’t dwell in the misgivings of the past.”

“For a moment there I thought I was never going to see you alive and walking again. This indeed is …”

“A miracle.” Becka added.

“Welcome back Becka.” Ian said pulling Becka into a warm hug making Cassie feel really out of place.

“Look at this and tell me what you see?” Lucy dangled Cassie’s phone in front of Paul.

“Uuh… a blank message folder.”

“Detective you should be more optimistic about these things. Look again what don’t you see?”

Paul leaned forward. “I don’t see anything.”

“And what does that mean detective?”

“She has not contacted anyone via text.” Paul said less enthusiastically.

“Or they were all deleted.” Lucy filled in for the clueless detective.

“I have a friend who knows a friend who can retrieve WhatsApp chat quite easily. You know deleted messages are never really deleted.”

“Do I even want to know who your friend’s friend is?”

“Nope, but you really want to know what my friend’s friend recovered from the deleted texts.”

“Here.”

Be a good girl. We both know whose fault it was for the April 20th incident.
Maribel.

Paul looked at the grinning Lucy.

“The time stamp shows the message was sent 3 hours ago.”

“How about we find out what happened in April 20th?” Lucy prompted.

“But we do not know the year nor the crime that was committed?”

“If Cindy has been working for the Karugu’s for two years am guessing it happened before that. We will check the consecutive three years before that.” Paul said.

“I hope this works…. we are really doing detective work people…like real detetives.” Lucy Chanted excitedly.

Nick, Paul, Giovanni and Detective Paul looked at her amused.

“You really enjoying these. Aren’t you?”

“For the most part yeah.” Lucy responded.

“Nick since you are the only one who has a history with Maribel. We need you to help us with everything or anything that sparks interest.” Paul said to Nick.

“Sure, anything I can do to help.”

They did internet searches on google and YouTube but they could not find anything interesting.

“This is just a waste of time.” Lucy said in anger.

“No it not, we are making sure we have not left any stone unturned.” Paul reassured her.

“We do not have the luxury of time. Kim may be running out of time.”

“Clearly this is not working, what do we do now?” Stacy asked.

“We check magazines at the library, I mean we have to wait till dawn which is almost but I bet if it’s something to do with murder or any crime for that matter we will get it there.” Lucy suggested snapping her fingers.

“We do not have to wait till dawn, you remember that bombing incident of University students four years ago that closely followed the mall bombing?” Paul asked.

“Everybody remembers them, those we terrific days for all of us.” Stacy emphasized.

“The head of the police department started stocking newspapers majorly because of bounties we put for anyone who would catch the culprits, even after the case was solved we continued with the habit. I bet there are newspapers from upto five years ago inside there.” Paul said.

“Then what are we waiting for.” Lucy said.

“Now you talk or your wrap-sheet continues to build. It’s sad to imagine that if you had cooperated an hour ago we would have never gotten Mr. Kirui story. So are you ready to tell us what happened to him?”

“Am not saying anything detective.”

“Oh okay, as soon as the sun rises am going to my captain and opening an investigation. You are not walking scot free either way but you could lay off some years from your sentence with your cooperation. Maribel maybe smart but if there is something I have learnt in my line of work is that in a battle between good and evil, good always wins. Choose your side wisely.” Paul said rising from his seat.
He opened the door to leave them.

“Wait detective.”

“I did not intend for him to die like that, Mr Kirui.”

“You want to fill me in on your customer for tonight.”  Maribel asked Cassie.

“Not particularly.”

“Why, you don’t want me to know who your knight of shining armor is.” Maribel continued playing with her best friend.

“I don’t want to talk about it Maribel so stop pestering me.”

“Come on dude, I always let you in on all my clients.”

“What happens when one of your clients is a toad?” Cassie asked.

“Eeew that bad, we don’t kiss frogs.” Maribel snorted

“It’s not like I have a choice on this one.”

“Of course you have a choice on who you sleep with Cassie, who runs the world?”

“Am afraid that’s not the case on this one.”

“What do you mean? Who is the client?” Maribel asked.

“Mr. Kirui.”

“Mr. Kirui our boss’ friend.”

“That one.” Cassie said almost gritting her teeth.

“You don’t have to go Cassie.”

“The big man made it clear that I was to make his friend happy else I lose this job, I can’t afford to lose this job. We both know how we got this one in the first place.” Cassie said.

“Don’t even remind me.”

Soon Cassie’s shift ended and she had to leave for home and prepare to meet her client. The things they did to get by with their lives were quite shady and even ugly sometimes. She got to her apartment and did a few things before leaving for her date at seven. She was supposed to meet him at Panama hotel.

She got into a matatu and twenty minutes later she stood in front of Panama. Surprisingly Maribel was there too. She approached where Maribel stood.

“Maribel what are you doing here?”

“Am here for you, if you don’t want to do this you are not going to.”

“What do you mean?’

Maribel reached for her trench coat and withdrew a syringe filled with colorless liquid. Cassie seeing this stepped back.

“Don’t worry this is for Mr.Kirui, you just inject him on the neck like we did before and he will wake up in the morning without a clue of what happened. You will still hold your job and you will not have to kiss a frog.”

“I am not sticking that on anybody’s neck.” Cassie said walking into the hotel. She was supposed to meet her client in room 105.

“Well I hope you won’t regret when the frog sticks his tail between your cookie jar.”

Cassie stopped stepped back and grabbed the syringe and left without saying anything. She found Kirui already in. He had ordered some chicken with chips to be brought and they ate while Kirui tried to spark a conversation, Cassie tried very hard not to just spit on his face. When they finished taking their meal Kirui held her hand and led her towards the bed.

. Deciding to take control she made him sit then she sat coiling her legs around his waist. The trench coat with the syringe was just at arm’s length and she reached out for it.

“I knew you would come around.” Mr. Kirui said.

“Am glad I did,” Cassie said drawing the syringe near his neck.

“They always do.” With that the needle sank deep in his neck and he was knocked out immediately.
Cassie struggled to put him in a sleeping position. She placed her hand on the neck to get a pulse but there wasn’t any. Panic crept in her heart. Did she give him too much? She picked up her phone and called Maribel who picked immediately.

“You calling means the deed is done, well done girl.” Maribel said in a cheerful voice.

“Maribel he has no pulse, you gave me poison.”

“Cassie relax, his heart rate was slowed down that is why you don’t feel any pulse but am sure he will come around in the morning, relax.”

Three hours later his body temperature was still dropping, he was really getting cold like a corpse. Cassie called Maribel and soon enough she was there with her at the hotel room dragging a very large suitcase. She touched his arm and did not proceed from there.

“He is dead.” She said casually.

“Dead? When you gave me the syringe you did not tell me it would kill him.” Cassie said in the verge of tears.

“Jeez, Cass I thought you hated the guy, so what if he is dead, he was willing to sleep with you though you are the age of his grand-daughter. He deserves death.” Maribel side while removing the covers.

“I am not a murderer, what are you doing?” Cassie asked.

“Taking care of this.” Maribel said in a stern voice.

“Take my house keys, I will meet you there when am done.”

Cassie took the key and a bottle of sminorf that was unopened on top of the table then left.

Maribel came back at dawn. She removed her trench coat and threw a log book on top of the table that had the name of Mr. Kirui and other guest who had booked into the Panama hotel that day.

“It’s done.” She said.
