Dorcas

Dorcas could not sleep that night. Her thought kept shifting from Chris to Becka. Paul had told her that roughly two weeks ago Chris had placed the same amount of money withdrawn from their joint account to another joint account. A woman named Abigael was the one he had joint ownership with. Who could she be? One thing was sure, he was sleeping with her. 

She had to focus her energy towards her daughter now . Poor thing, she had suffered a lot. Was God punishing her for what she did but she didn’t do it right? She had so many questions and the only person who had the answers were Tony and Becka, one was dead and the other in a coma in hospital.

The detective had been so kind to her. It had been a while since she received such a kind of treatment. Not even the church or the women group she had been attending had been kind to her. It was unlucky for her that Christine belong in both the church and the group. If Kim’ mother had been alive she could have had a good friend to lean on. 

She was confined between home, work and the station. Her mini prison. Her husband left. Lonely was how she felt.

. To Dorcas this was one of her dreams come true. Having to sneak out of the house to join her lover on long rides on his cycle was one thing he had never pictured herself doing. When her parent’s would come back and find her missing she would pretend that she had been over at Maggie’s place.  This went on for a while and if it was dream, she never wanted to wake up from it.

One evening after parting with Kim she walked home and found Maggie waiting at their gate.  She was not in her normal cheerful mood.  Naturally she though she was sulking because Dorcas had been spending much time with her boyfriend. Maggie did not know she was in a relationship with Kim, she had choose to withhold that piece. 

“Hi Maggie, i wasn’t expecting you. What brings you here?”

She made as if to hug her but went into a rude shock when Maggie slapped her.

“What the hell Maggie!” She exclaimed holding her left check. Dorcas was not a vicious type. She tried remaining cool.

“How long have you been with Chris, you slut?”

“Maggie!”

Dorcas wasn’t really much appreciative of the way Maggie was talking down on her. Why would she be upset about the fact that she was dating Kim? She decided to act cool.

“For a month now.” She responded.

“Stay away from Kim, he is mine. Stay away..!” She then walked away.

Dorcas jaw dropped. That was a surprise. Chris and Maggie? No there had to be a mistake. Maggie had been the one advising her not to get her hopes high on Kim. Turns out she was also eyeing the price.

That marked the end of their friendship. She wondered what happened to Maggie. She never saw her or heard from her again. Maybe she had found love to sooth her broken heart and was now better off. She wished she could tell her how much she had been spared. The heart ache, pain and the gross loneliness. The list was long. 
She laid on her bed feeling empty.

She had confronted Chris back then. Chris admitted that he had hooked up with Maggie a few times but that was all and it had been before dating Dorcas. Of course she believed him, why wouldn’t she?  Maybe if she had not been busy falling in love she would have seen it as a course to raise alarm. Now time was past and regret was all she had. Seventeen years of her life that the termites had eaten.

Getting pregnant with Becka had hasten the need for them to get married. Before she could tell her parents they died in a gruesome car accident.  Chris had been her only source of comfort and she got married blindly. She had been only twenty one then and had remained a house wife till she turned twenty five. That was when he was given her family business to run according to her parent’s wishes on the will. If not for a trust worthy family friend who also doubled as her god father, the business might have collapsed in her care. If only she could turn back time!

Slowly she reached out and picked up her phone from the bedside locker.

Detective Paul.

He couldn’t stop thinking about her. . That poor woman Dorcas. As if it wasn’t enough that she was going through a divorce after her daughter’s trial, now she had to deal with the fact that her daughter may never wake up from the coma.

. Life could be so unfair sometimes. The more time passed, the more he was convinced that Becka was innocent. He was going to do everything he could to bring the killer to justice. He was going to bring back happiness into Dorcas’ life.

What could a man be searching for to leave woman like Dorcas. She was beautiful, inside and out. He understood her pain deeply. It had been so hard for him when his wife Sandra left. He had to balance between being a father and a cop, not forgetting the emotional turmoil he went through during that particular period. 

When he held her as she sobbed he wanted to tell her that it all gets better. It would only take a while before it got to better. He was still occupied with her thoughts when the phone rang.
It was Dorcas. Excitement building up in him, he picked up the call and answered.

“Hello”
