The Emerald Chase - Episode 48

 

*** Darren sighs for the umpteenth time as he slides his hand into her hair, caressing her scalp, massaging it in the process.. Emerald snuggles closer, loving the feel of his fingers in her hair..

"You were saying something D"

She says interrupting his thoughts.. He stares down at her, smiling

"I was saying you have the most captivating eyes..."

She blushes and hides her face in his chest as he chuckles..

"Well.. As I was saying. . After I lost consciousness that day, I had apparently slipped into coma and you know by then, the media had surrounded the house waiting for the opportunity to start giving off more information. So when I was been taken out on a stretcher they suddenly presumed me to be dead with the blood and all.. Within minutes, the news was all over the social media networks. Still beats me how bloggers manage to post news without verifying if it's true or not.. I didn't know all of this of course. Catherine told me after I woke up"

"Why didn't she clear the air if she knew the truth then?"

Emerald asks and he shrugs

"She was scared"

"Scared?"

He nods, planting a light kiss to her forehead...

"Yes. Scared

. According to her, she didn't want to lose another son. She didn't want anyone finding out, well at least until my father was permanently behind bars. She used to have this mentality that when my father hears I'm alive, he might just send someone to get rid of me. You know how certain people are in jail yet they manage to control things outside. Same with my father. He has men everywhere and he could still send someone after me."

"Do you think he's capable of hurting you?"

A flicker of pain and anger flashes in his eyes but it disappears immediately

"That man is capable of anything Emerald"

"So what happened when you woke up?"

"I woke up a month ago and just about that time, my father's case was being heard in court. I wanted to be the prosecuting lawyer so bad but I couldn't because everyone thought I was dead. I had to pass the case over to a different attorney including all the evidences. I went to see my dad just before he was taken to jail but I don't think he saw me. Thereafter, I searched for you but you had moved out of your apartment. I went to the agency where you work for many times for your address but they said it was confidential. I had to beat the crap out of the receptionist before.."

"You beat someone Darren?"

Emerald gasps

"Not really. Just a little"

Darren smirks.

"So... Catherine is truly your mother?"

He nods

"Yes. Turns out she was another victim of my father. She was too scared of him so I guess she tried to make up by trying to get closer to me but I never let her get close. I never let her say more than sentence to me. I was out of country also for years"

"At least you have her now"

"And you"

he adds.. They smile at each other..

"You're sleepy aren't you?"

Darren asks after a while.

She nods.

She hadn't had proper sleep for months now..

"Close your eyes and go to sleep"

She stares at him reluctantly.

"I will be right here when you wake up. I promise"

he assures her and she immediately settles in between his spread legs, resting her head on his chest.. Falling asleep immediately.

She rubs her eyes, yawning in the process as she rolls on the bed.. She squints her eyes.

Everywhere was dark and... Darren.. She gasps, fear gripping her immediately. Darren.. Where was he? She had fallen asleep in his arms and.. Oh God!! It was all a dream.

It wasn't real.. Before she could freak out some more, a familiar sweet scent hits her nose.. Wait.. Was that a??.. Emerald brings her hand up to where the scent was emanating from.

She stops when her fingers glide over something soft.. She squints her eyes, taking in the object.

Her eyes grows wide.

It was a red rose.

She smiles, sniffing it, just then, several lights come on, illuminating the room. It wasn't the normal bright light.

It was the dull, dimly lit bedside lamp.

Several of them were lit.

Two in each side of the four corners of the room.

One larger one in the middle of the room and surrounding the lamp were several red petals arranged in the form of letters to form a sentence.

Emerald steps down from the bed slowly and walks towards the lamp.

She squints her eyes as she starts to make out the words.

"W.I.L.L Y.O.U. M.A.R.R.Y M.E?"

Emerald gasps when the words start to sink in.

"Oh my God!!"

With the shock still looming over her head, she suddenly notices a presence behind her.

His sandalwood scented Cologne evading her nostrils.. She turns to find Darren on one knee, an opened velvet box in his hand revealing a diamond ring, with emerald stones encrusted around it's band with an impressive larger one sticking out in the middle..

"Before you say anything let me finish first else I'll forget everything"

Darren clears his throat before continuing as she stares at him, her jaw dropping.

"Emerald, I don't even know where to start because I'm sure you already know how much you mean to me. I love you Emmie. So very much and that's why you find me on my knee this very moment, seeking for an opportunity to spend the rest of my life with you. I would choose you over and over again amongst a million women because just like your name, you're an emerald, a rare gem. You make me want to be a better person, Emmie. You make me feel things no woman has ever done. I love you. I do. Hell, words can't even describe how much I love you. Emerald Arthur, would you please be my wife and the mother of my children? Would you please do me the favour of marrying me? I want to love you every second of my life. Would you let me?"

She stares at him utterly dumfounded..

"I... I....my past Darren.. I.."

She begins when he cuts her off.

"I don't care about your past. Whatever happened in your past remains past. I care about you, your present and future nothing else matters. Just you and I. Let me make you happy Emerald. Allow me. Let me in. Please"

he pleads... Silence..

"Oh for Christ's sake, say yes already you little rat!!"

Tonia shouts from across the room..

. Darren smiles.

"You heard her Emmie.. Say yes??"

he pouts and she laughs, fighting back her tears.

"This is insane. We haven't even dated yet"

"I can fix that. You can be my girlfriend and fiancée at the same time. What do you say?"

She shakes her head, smiling.

"Please help a brother here. My knees are already hurting"

Darren pouts more.

Emerald stares at her brother and sister in law and then at Steven and Tonia who were all smiling.

She turns to Darren, a huge smile breaking across her face

"Call me a dysfunctional saturated pig if i say no! Of course I'll marry you!!"

She yells and Darren laughs as he slips the ring onto her third finger while he stands to his feet.

"I love you Emerald Adams Benson"

he says pulling her by the waist towards his hard chest.

"You gave me your surname already huh? I like it"

she bites her lips s-ductively. "I like you more" he says before crushing his lips with hers, kissing her fiercely.
