The Bet - Episode 18

 

"Doctor please do everything you can to make sure you save the mother and baby" Donald said in the private hospital she had been rushed to 

"Sir we are doing all we can, but she did loose a lot of blood and is currently in shock, she would be fine but the baby... I have to prepare your mind..  might not make it" the doctor said slowly
Her mother was in tears
"oh my poor Jessica" she exclaimed 
"Is there really nothing you can do, she would be really devastated "her father insisted glancing at the mother, the doctor paused then shook his head 
"I'm sorry"
He walked away and the mother sat down and sobbed loudly 
"why does she have to go through so much, my poor child"
The father sat with her in silence, praying she came out of this intact.

Raymond stared at Jessica as the nurse put up the next drip, he roved his chin in thought, it was the next day after the accident and she had received 4 pints of blood, he remembered when he had been called and told by Christy that an eyewitness had witnessed the accident, describing the jeep that had hit her, he knew who it was immediately and had called her up, she refused to pick at first but did after a while confirming her guilt 

"Helo darling, sorry I was just attending to some clients, I knew you d miss me.. "
"I know it was you" he said bitterly
"What's wrong sweety, is everything alright? "
"Don't play dumb, I know it was you, and I swear to god if anything happens to her,  know I'm coming for you"
He cut before she said anything more and rushed to the hospital. 
 
He called his brother after he saw Jessica's bad state and told him everything 
"I want her arrested" he blurted
"Bro calm down, you do know who her family is, she's got backup, besides she'd just deny everything  and say we can't prove any of  it"
"The description fit her old jeep, and she's got motive "
"Fine, we might be able to hold her for now but we need more evidence lest they'd bail her out in no time"
"Tell father, tell him she murdered his grandson, I hope he's happy with the outcome" he  cut in anger and shut his eyes as tears formed.

"Desmond no, please don't, don't do this,  I love you" she cried
"Shut up" he slapped her back to the bed "you think you're tough uh"
"Stop, no, I'm a v..  v.

Jessica  shook her head.., then winced as the next images came on, she was in the  water with Raymond, gazing into his eyes, she giggled out but shook her head again as she wailed in the bathroom after he broke her heart, she squinted her eyes shut as her car was being hit severally 
"My baby"she felt her stomach "my baby.. My baby....  Noooooooooo"

She opened her eyes slowly and it focused on  Raymond staring down at her, she glanced at his fingers which were laced in hers 
"I had to tell him, thought you'd want him here" Christy said from the other side of the bed, she turned to look at her mother,  Christy came close "how are you feeling, do you want me to call the doctor? "
"No she's fine" Raymond said, Christy looked at him recalling he too was a  doctor then she stood up
"Lemme leave you two for a while, I ll be right back"
Jessica nodded, there was silence after the door closed behind her. 
Jessica glanced at her stomach which was now flat, turned away and began to cry
"Oh baby, don't... "he paused" do that"he said
She sobbed more so he got in the bed with her and pulled her to him
"I'm so sorry, feel this is all my fault" he kissed her forehead  "I'm  so sorry babe, for everything" he was silent as it sunk in, he pulled back her hair
"Do not even think about this, the baby is gone but we still have each other, we can still make all the babies in the world,  maybe the next one would be twins, what do you think, do you want a boy and a girl, we can make it happen, even right now" he laced her fingers in his "what do you say" she elbowed him and shifted away, he chuckled and pulled her back to him 
"I missed you too".

Gina and Mariam made their way there in no time, with his friends
"The baby was still too small to survive the trauma" he told them
"Damn that girls a b-tch" Maxwell said angered as all the rest were. 
Gina sat with her friend on the bed to be sure she was fine while Mariam glared daggers at Raymond knowing this was all his fault for going out with Cilia in the first place, but he looked really remorse and Jessica seemed to have forgiven him so she didn't have a say anymore.  
A man with Agbada walked into the room with a young man who was the spitting image of Raymond 
"Dad? "Raymond said and they looked at each other
"I came as soon as I heard "he said" she has been arrested, tried leaving the country but we got her at the airport, she's a dangerous person and belongs behind barsbars" he paused "I'm sorry son " a silence as Raymond looked at Jessica who looked forlorn
"Its not gonna bring back our baby junior but at least justice is being served "Richmond added and the others nodded. 
Raymond went to hug his father "Thanks Dad"
"Your welcome "he looked at Jessica "maybe its time you brought her home"he said. 
 
Jessica was discharged home and everything returned to normal,  though everyone still walked on eggshells around her. 
It was a year later and she had finished her NYSC, she had met her fathers family and they seemed to be getting along just fine, though her father was mostly bedridden now, she devoted all her time in taking care of him
"Do you think you need to see a psychologist? ". Raymond asked once when they went out, to get popcorn and icecream
"What no". she chuckled surprised 
"Just that you've been through a lot, part of it being my fault" he said sadly "but if you need professional help.. "
"Are you calling me crazy"
"Why do you say that, a psychologist is just a doctor you can talk to, about everything "
She sucked on her icecream"I'm fine"
"You sure? "
She nodded, he paused
"So if I um asked you another question you ll say yes"
"What question would possibly require a yes? "she rolled her eyes before she figured it out but by then he was already on his knees, speech ready
"I  know I don't deserve you Jessica and this is probably not the right time but I want you in my life, permanently,  I'm too scared to loose you again, thats why I'm asking you to do me the honor of becoming my wife? "
She stopped sucking on the icecream and looked at him, then the ring he had opened glittering  in the afternoon sun, they were in a park, with people walking by, she didn't know he would embarrass her like that
"you promised to say yes" he said when she said nothing
"I did no such thing Raymond" she retorted
"Okay say no and let me get off my knees"
She laughed"omg I can't believe you ll do this "he took her so unawares
"I had to seize the opportunity, and it seemed like the perfect moment "he said wanting to close the ring, when she rolled her eyes
"Fine, yes" she said "I ll marry you Raymond, I could think of nothing else." She stretched out her hand and he slid the ring in fourth finger with smiles on his face as he leaned and kissed her,  his fingers palming her face
"I love you Jessica, I promise never to hurt you for the rest of my days"he said. 
She stared into his eyes with joy in her heart, not believing this was happening,  she glanced down shyly
"I love you too Raymond ". She said. "I'm forever in love with you"

There is always a silver lining in every dark cloud, Jessica  had to go through a lot in order to get the worst player and the  love of her life sprawling at her feet but she got her happiness in the end.  
What doesn't kill you, makes you stronger.
