The Bet - Episode 3

 

Laughter erupted from Raymond's balcony as he entertained his friends Chris and Maxwell who was also a doctor...

"So how is your program coming along, have you started applying for residency?" He asked Maxwell, Maxwell was a guy who kept a lot of beards, it was weird for a doctor but he didn't care

"Man I'm not looking to work in Nigeria, I'm going abroad, still processing my Plab exams"he replied

" you should stay in Nigeria and help your motherland "Raymond said taking up his drink

" And what does it have for me as a doctor except peanuts?".Maxwell asked

"It shouldn't be about the money all the time. medicine is a calling"

​​​​​​"cheers to your patriotism man, you can afford to work for free if you like, you were born with a silver spoon, you wouldn't even understand, I have to make the dough"

"Don't say that I wouldn't understand, I do...I just believe more in this country"

"Then you should stay and make it better, you don't even have to work, you are gonna inherit your Father's business and become a billionaire in no time"

"Such assumptions you make..I am not interested in my fathers company, I work and make my own money"

People just always assumed he was a spoiled son of a bitch  and he admitted he lived a spoiled life but he worked hard for his money, his father being rich to sponsor whatever he was doing was just a plus

"You guys making serious conversation this cool evening over beer is appalling" Chris chirped in pouring another glass of beer for himself, Maxwell lit a cigarette and puffed leaning back

"How about that girl you were telling me about Chris..?"

"You mean at the party, the one that slapped Raymond, Playboy number one" Chris said and burst into laughter, he laughed more at Raymond's glare . Raymond had succeeded in forgetting about the whole issue, why were they bringing it up now

" I actually did expect it"he said" before I even got her to dance..."he paused and collected a cigarette from Maxwell which he lit, he waved his hand"just forget about it, she missed out, because immediately she left I had countless of girls to choose from, wonder why you had to make me go through such stress"he leaned back on the chair

"Because you need such a challenge to keep you on your toes"Chris said

"No thanks" Raymond said in dismissal

"Would I take it that I'm back to winning the trio on women" Maxwell teased

" I'm in no competition with anyone, I just do my thing"he blew out smoke looking away as he recalled how he had lain awake that night wondering how he would quench the fire she had started...what was her deal even?

" but you know such girls interest me, who's she, is she a virgin?"Maxwell asked Chris

"She's my girlfriend's bestfriend, I pray shes a virgin "

Raymond waved it off "She was just playing hard to get" Raymond consoled himself taking up his beer to drink"and I am not interested in such games"

"Hmm" Maxwell rubbed his beards

"What if we are.."Chris asked

"Think about the thrill of getting her to finally surrender to you...uh.." he leaned forward" the lord and master" Chris mocked

"You know I'm gonna get back at you for this..but.let's talk about other things" 

"You asked for a girl, I did bring  you one,  now you're complaining" Chris said and laughed.

Jessica walked into the flat with Gina her other friend, Gina was petite and beautiful, she was also already engaged to be married, her mother was better now and out of the hospital where she had been previously admitted.

It was two weeks after the party, she had forgotten about him and was no longer angry with Mariam because she never brought him up again and even when Chris came around, he didn't bring his friend.

​​​​​​Gina's brother Alex was around, he just got a job in Abuja with a very fat salary but was still in the process of moving out of the house, he was an accountant in a fast growing international company

"Wow all the girls would clamour for him now, such potential" Jessica said when Gina had told her in class

"You bet"

"What about Tricia, his girlfriend"

"Ex ..you mean, Tricia has long been extinct before he even got a job, now she's begging to come back" Jessica found it funny as they had laughed.

Now in the house, she crossed her legs and watched TV while Gina talked with her mother in the kitchen.

. Alex was moving towards the dinning table when he saw her, he paused then moved closer

"Hey Jess.."

She turned "omg, Alex...hi..I didn't know you were home"

"But you knew I was moving out and didn't even bother to call" he accused as he came to sit

"My bad, just had a lot of stuff going on. ."

"No prob..I understand." he paused".where's Gina, hope she didn't just leave you here"

"no she didn't, shes in the kitchen with your mom"she said

A silence as he stared at her"This is a new hairdo....I like it"

She smiled, she had decided to go with a shorter haido this time and was glad with the outcome..

"Thanks" she said

"You're getting prettier everyday, how haven't I noticed"he said

She opened her mouth then closed it in embarrassment"um..thanks? "She paused.." You too..I guess your the hottest bachelor in town now, with your new job and all.."a pause "congrats on that"

"Thanks..but I'm not in the market" he said, she laughed met his gaze then looked away"are you still single or someone has swept you away?"he asked

"Of course I am..who could have dared'she replied no longer comfortable with the direction the conversation was taking

" you never could tell with love"he said then wanted to say something when Gina walked in then paused

"Hope I'm not interrupting.."

"No of course not, I was just entertaining your friend you left here bored"

Jessica laughed as Gina flicked her brother the bird"go mind your business, its my friend, I can treat her anyway I like"she said and sat beside Jessica

"Others of course...but not Jessica.." He insisted, she pushed him away as he went into the kitchen to disturb his mother

"Your brother is so funny..whoever would date him would be so lucky"Jessica said

Gina stared at her"are you into my brother.. ?"

"What no..I'm just appreciating his personality...he's funny, hardworking and real nice "

Gina stared at her again "don't just go getting ideas"

Jessica gaped "sorry I even said anything, I was just talking"she raised her hands in surrender

Gina took up the remote and changed the station to E

"You know you could be the lucky girl and I won't shout...your like my sister already"

Jessica gaped at her then decided not to reply.
