Second Chance - Episode 21

NARRATOR's POV

It was a beautiful morning and a little bit sunny. The weather was clearer and looked better than it had been for several days. The old men were seated at the shore  with their wives while the young were standing and taking some hunting equipments from a big sack, a little further away from the shore.

Some of the younger ladies including Kathia were either standing in the water or taking a  swim, busy giggling and gisting.

Joe was addressing everyone, busy pacing excitedly as he tried to make his vocie as audible as he could for both parties to hear him.

"Hunting together  with your spouse serves the purpose of rekindling an old flame. You need t0 protect each other and help each other just like you are supposed to in your relationship . Each couple would disperse into the woods so you need to look out for flying arrows and that is when you protect each other. Please be very careful, this is just a game and if you think you cannot handle it, please stay back, however, the winning couple would go away with a very special gift......."

":Would you go hunting Kat?" Lucy, one of the younger women asked.

Kat shrugged as she quickly glanced towards Lucy, her new found friend.

"I don't know"

"What do you mean?  wouldn't you want to go with that sexy stud of yours" Lucy teased with a wink.

Katrina blushed and the ladies around her screamed...splashing more water on her.

"But seriously Kat, you both seemed as if just married or that you are just falling in love, I don't get it." Rhona put in. She was a little bit older than the both of them.

"How long have you been married?" She asked.

"SOme months" Kat replied uncomfortably.."Going to a year now though"

"WOw! and you both still get the flame! Seems this kind of camping wasn't needed by you two" Rhonda concluded and others around her nodded.

Katrina smiled and asked

. "Why did you say that?"

"Have you seen yourselves?. Did you see the way he grabbed you last night and kissed you?" Lucy put in. Closing her eyes and inhaled deeply. "My God if Samson can kiss me like that, I will definitely explode and I would never love any man again. You are so lucky you have someone that looks at you when you are not watching and that kisses you like that."

Katrina frowned.."Looks at me how?" She had told Maimunat to keep her royalty a secret so she could be free with the rest

"He has been looking at you especially when he thought you were e not looking and you have been doing the same! Its either you both are are not married but are  so in love each other and  you have got lots of issues to trash out OR you are married and still in love with each other..you are so lucky Katrina!"

Katrina stood, looking both sad and happy at the same time at Lucy's words and the she glanced at the men..they were either carrying a gun or a bow...Miguel was with them, he had a gun strapped to his back and was walking with the turban man ,as he walked, his two buttons were loosened, revealing his studded chest, Katrina knew every lady standing beside her were not looking at their spouses, they were looking at him..

"Wooow..he is so cute" Lucy said unable to stop herself.

"I know" Katrina replied. "That’s my man" She said quietly with a little bit of pride and uncertainty.

"Is she going with you?" Akeem asked Miguel as they both bent to clean their guns.

"WHo?" Miguel asked on purpose.

"Your wife..who else?" He replied.

'Oh! I don't know if she would want to go" replied Miguel with a frown.

"If she is not going , I may have to stay behind, you know..to look out for her" Akeem said teasingly as he turned around to look at the ladies.

"Why would you want to do that Akeem?"

"Maybe because she looks like she needs someone right now?"

"What does that mean?"

Miguel turned around to look at the ladies, she was standing at  the shore now, arms akimbo and facing their direction, she looked a little sad and worried but then she laughed at what one of the ladies said and then he looked up while their eyes met and froze for a while before they both looked away.

"I don't think I need you to do that Akeem. It's my job to take care of my wife..but you can stay back and watch the drinks"  Miguel replied with a laugh while he slung his gun around his back and then walked towards her...

As he approached the ladies, they kept quiet as they took their time to admire him to their fullest, but then he beckoned to her to walk over and meet him.

KATHIA’S POV

They were both silent at first as they were now standing alone away from the rest.

"You are going with me right?"

I Frowned and nodded. "Yeah, I don't know how to hunt though but I can walk with you" I replied.

More awkward silence.....

I felt like I had so much but to say to ask but I just froze, I didn't even know what to say or how to start. I was definetly not going to ask him where he slept last  night since he hadn't slept in the tent and I had actually expected him..how stupid of me..

"Well, let's go then" He replied as  we followed the rest who were now walking and heading towards the woods.  They all seemed so excited as they embraced one another, putting arms around one an0ther like normal couple.

I noticed as he brushed a hand over his hair and I felt his arm slightly coming around my waist and then it dropped just before he could reach me. I swallowed..this hunting was a terrible idea after all...

MIGUEL

We were already deep in the woods, and not an animal in sight, each time I thought I heard something and I cocked my gun, it was either she stepped on a stick which snapped or she hit a foot against a stone. Taking her with me was such a bad idea.

I had my back against a tree as I waited for her to catch up with me. Others have already scattered in the woods though we could hear laughter, but they seemed far away.

The long gown she wore caught some weeds which got her pinned to a spot and which she was struggling with  while I watched in interest.

"Who wears such cloth to hunt anyways?" I asked aloud.

She ignored me as she battled with the gown which later tore while I burst into laughter.

She looked quite hurt as she stared at the torn gown and then at me..

"You know it wouldn't have cost anything if you had come to help"

"Well, I know.

. But you din't ask, you seemed to have it in control" I said with a shrug.

"I didn't and you knew it. What is wrong with you Miguel! Why is your pride so important than your feelings or your happiness! "

The laughter that was coming died in my throat as she said that and I frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"You heard me MIguel! What is it that you have been trying to prove to me all these while . That you don't care about me? That you don't feel anything? Is that it? You keep lying to yourself  and you keep hurting me and yourself! What is wrong with you? Why do you think this is a competition? If you were thinking this is a competition and you are so bent on winning, making me look stupid all the time...well,,,you win okay..because I am so tired of all these!"

"You brought up the competetion Kathia not me! You said I make you look stupid? Do you even know what you did to me? Do you remember what you said on our wedding night? That was the most unkind statement anyone could have said to me!" I was shouting at the top of my voice now.."You made me so little as if I demanded to be married to you. I didn't want you Kathia. Then you started acting so mean and so wicked to people around you! You shut everyone out and now all of a sudden you are acting as if you are the one in pain! You were so selfish , so mean, so rude so wicked! No one could please you..!"

"That was not me Miguel!" I screamed, hesitated and continued in frustration. "Well, that was me..but not really me..I swear! That is why I have been trying to prove it to you! I know I did lots of things which I don't even remember but, I swear I have changed!"

MIGUEL

I could see the honesty and frustration twinkling in her beautiful eyes as she looked at me whie I stood akimbo. I knew she had changed, I knew she was telling the truth. I saw it...this wasn’t the person I married. But how could they be the same person!

"I want to believe you  so much Katrina but...explain to me why I should? Why do you need me to ‘believe you?"

"Because I love you Miguel. I started to love you ever since I started seeing you in my dreams! Ever since I saw you on that horse in that abandoned field ...even though I never saw your face..I loved you ever since I was nine years old in my own world..before I came here."

Okay...this is getting crazy

"You dreamed about me?"

"yes alot Miguel...look, I have things to tell you, it may sound so weird but you need to believe me okay?"

"Well, I guess we have lots of dreams to talk about..why don't we sit..sure I have what I need to tell you too"

She smiled as I took her hand and we went to sit on a wood which was near-by..

"I have been sleeping for more than two months now Miguel......"

I swear, if my boyfriend calls me oneday and says, TOBI, the person you have been seeing all these while is 'me in another version. I came from 1980" I will just call his mother to come and carry her pikin and to bring a native doctor, a medical doctor, an Alhaji and a Pastor with her.
