ANYWAY, LET'S MEET THE DUDE
“Oh, hell!” I cursed under my breath as I finished the tenth lapse of the running. I was almost out of air and breathing heavily.
I collapsed into the ground, squinting as the sun ray hit my eyes . The only thing I’ve been thinking about for the past three days was how to win this bloody game we would be having in the next couple of days.
I turned around, the rest of the team were all warming up. Coach Jackson kept on blowing his whistle for no reason. I still thought it was a bad idea that our former coach was replaced. This new one didn’t seem to know what he was doing and the team agreed with me. Well, they always did agree with me on everything. I was the captain, as well as the most popular boy in the school. Those two were a big deal.
I sighed as I saw James running towards me in his jersey. I fought the urge not to murder him.
“You really can’t be serious!” I said to him as he got closer.
He gave an apologetic look but he would have try harder.
“Look man, this is serious. This game means everything to me, to the team

. You got to be more serious and get your ass here as soon as possible!”
“Look, I’m sorry, alright. I don’t ditch classes. Everyone cannot have everything like you,” he scoffed.
That got me off. I straightened up. “What did you say?”
“I mean, look at you. You are super brilliant, popular, everything is working out for you. Even if you don’t miss classes, it doesn’t affect your grades but I got to work harder, else my pops will kill me.”
I laughed. “Well, I’m sorry for lashing out at you, but you’ re right, you all cannot be like me,” I joked and he picked up the ball on the floor, and threw it really hard at my face.
“So, have you seen her?” he asked while sitting on the floor next to me. He was wearing his boots.
At the mention of the name, my stomach did a double flip. “What Elizabeth ?”
“Elizabeth Shaw, have you forgotten her so soon? You’re a jerk, man.”
“Elizabeth Shaw? She’s back? What for?”
He shrugged. “I don’t know but she looked so fine, damn! I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s back to make you pay for what you did to her!”
I frowned. “I did nothing to her, man,” I said and straightened up. “Whatever happened those years were because of her foolishness.”
The coach was blowing the whistle now to summon us.
“Come on, we got to practice,” I said, pulling him up.
“So, are you saying, whatever happened between you two, was just a game?”
I nodded. “Of course, it was a truth and a dare game, she was just stupid enough to fall for me. Now come on….”
While both of us walked towards the rest of the team, my mind couldn’t help but wonder what the hell she came back here to do.
I walked down the corridor towards my locker but stopped as I saw both Rose and Emily . They seemed to be arguing about something. Unfortunately, they were standing right opposite my locker. As they sighted me, they stopped.
Talk about awkward…
Emily folded her arms and wasn’t looking at me but Rose looked very angry and was walking towards me. I sighed and stopped. What now?
“Hello Rose,” I managed to say.
“Elizabeth ,” she replied. “Did you not see all my calls or my texts?” she asked as calmly as she could muster.
“Well, I did actually, I’m sorry,” I said, regrettably.
“It doesn’t matter,” she replied. “You’re just the same old Elizabeth as you’ve always been. Once someone pisses you off, you throw everything else to the wind.”
“No, let me finish,” she stamped her heel on the floor. This seemed to draw attention and almost everyone was now looking at us. “I don’t care what happened between you and Emily , but we were friends, the four of us. You, me, Emily , and even Stacey! Do you even remember her?”
Of course I remembered Stacey, she was Rose’s bestfriend. But she often got sick, I remembered the night of the incident, I had just come from visiting her in the hospital…oh my goodness! Stacey would have called me but she never did.
“What happened to her?” I asked, my heart beating.
Rose sniffed. “She died.”
I gasped. Oh my God!
“Rose, I didn’t know. I’m so sorry,” I managed to say.
“It doesn’t matter anymore. You still clearly care about no one but yourself, just as always! ”
That statement stung me, I wanted to explain but I couldn’t. Rose only walked back to Emily who exchanged glances with me before walking out.
I walked to my locker with trembling hands….my heart broke. It was too much, sweet, gentle Stacey. I’m really sorry.
I felt sad. Rose was right, I was selfish and I regretted everything.
“Hello, Elizabeth ,” said a soft female voice behind me.
I sniffed and quickly cleaned my face before turning around. When I saw Camila, I cried and we embraced. She was also one of the people I missed in the school. We weren’t so close but it was really good to see someone who was genuinely happy to see me. I had helped her several times with her assignment when she needed me.
“How have you been?” she said as we pulled away. She was one of those girls Emily liked picking on but whom I always rescued. Emily was like the queen of the class, then, I couldn’t tell now.
“I’ve been good,” she replied. Her hair was messy and parked in a ponytail. Camille was one of those who wasn’t really into fashion. She was at one point the new girl of the school, people made fun of her but I never did. I thought it was pointless and unfair. We became good friends through the assignments we did together.
“I heard about what happened,” she said in a pitiful voice and that made me feel uncomfortable. “I’m so sorry, Emily is awful, you don’t deserve anyone like her or Vance .”
I smiled. “Thanks Camille, that’s really a nice thing to say.”
She smiled back. “I heard about Stacey, did you know?”
I nodded, sniffing and wiping my face. “Rose just told me.”
She gasped. “I’m really sorry.”
She shook her head. “No, I’ve to wait for my mum, she’s coming to pick me.”
“Oh, alright,” I replied, a bit disappointed.
“But, look, if you need a friend, you’ve got one right here.”
That touched me and I hugged her one more time. “Thank you.”
We pulled away and I watched her as she left. Then I turned towards my locker. I was relieved that at least, not everyone in the class hated me as I thought. Emily ’s face flashed in my memory, after everything, she had no decency to apologize to me. I would still need to apologize to Rose, she was afterall, right.
After shoving my heavy textbooks in my locker, I headed through the exit door which led towards the front of the school. The walk to the parking lot was rather short and before I knew it, the latest edition of Toyota Camry appeared in my vision.
It was a white car and really beautiful. My dad promised me a car, it was supposed to be my gift for coming back to California like he asked me to. Hopefully it would get hereby next week. I already got my driver’s license, he made sure of that.
As I was about to cross to the other side, a voice froze me on track, triggering a growing fury.
“Why the hell did you come back?”
