An abrupt yelp had erupted in the middle of the breezy night, interrupting my deep slumber... It started off as a faint sound that I'd chosen to disregard with a lazy groan, but then, it grew loud, and louder, until I'd awakened with a jolt. And what scared me even more was the fact that I'd noticed I was alone in the camp.

Noah, Milo, and Thato were nowhere in sight.

For a brief moment, I was struck by an inevitable pang of apprehensiveness, and I tried to convince myself everything was perfectly fine. But then the disturbing yelp had erupted again . Louder, scarier, and this time, I'd recognised it enough to call it a growl.

There's no way I'm remaining in here, I thought, immediately zipping the makeshift shelter open.. Once outside, the darkness that welcomed me was nothing I wasn't used to, the caboodle of trees had become shadowy silhouettes that was frightening in its own right. My gentle steps on the muddy ground, were as quiet as I could afford, and yet, my destination remained nothing but a mystery.

"Noah.."

"Thato.."

"Milo.."

I called out consecutively, but nothing. Still, the growl refused to fade away completely; It was intermittent, and the sound seemed to be coming off from someplace in front

. So, quickening my pace, I'd headed swiftly towards that very direction.

My search through that path had spanned quite a while, but sure enough, I'd found them somewhere around there, underneath one of the myriad of trees. Nonetheless, seeing them brought forth a mixture of emotions. The first was the feeling of sheer relief, that at least, I wasn't alone. But then, the second went far deeper: It was pure chaos.

Thato was the one making the growl. He seemed out of control, he looked like he was in grave pain. His blue eyes weren't as sparkly as I'd grown fond of, it seemed to have somehow lost its essence, looking duller in comparison. Then again, none of those were as frightening as his body structure. To put simply, he was half dog, half human. His facial appearance was similar to that of a dog, covered partially with delicate furs, whilst the rest of his body was absolutely humane.. Milo and Noah were distinctively in the picture likewise, holding tightly onto Thato on both sides, almost as if letting go of him would be accompanied by danger..

"What's going on?" My voice was breathy, shaky. I was surprised I hadn't even passed out yet.

"Lulu, get back inside!" Noah snarled through gritted teeth. He didn't even turn to look at me.

. It was almost as if a slight distraction could make things get out of hand.

"What's wrong with him?"

My insistent question had been interrupted by another loud yelp from Thato, his long canine popping out in the process.

"I said get inside!" Noah insisted, sparing me a brief glance this time. For the briefest of seconds, our eyes had made contact, his harsh ones boring into mine. In a normal situation, I was sure to have adhered to his stern instructions, heading right back into the camp without a second thought.

But as it appeared, that particular night wasn't a normal situation.

To be honest, it all happened with no conscious effort on my part. All I knew was that moments later, I'd moved closer to where they were crouched, ordering Milo and Noah to step aside. I'd noticed their hesitation, but they'd succumbed regardless, and that was all that mattered to me at that point at least. My hands had begun giving Thato a slow, and gentle massage, emitting golden sparks of an unknown source, seemingly unnatural. I noticed his growl fade to the point of nonexistence, his breathing normalised, the furs and canine were long gone. Suddenly, he was still, and it was at that same point, that I regained my full consciousness back.

By then, I was abnormally exhausted, I was weak in a way that I didn't understand. Beads of sweat was evident throughout my body, my anxiousness hadn't disappeared completely.

"What just happened? What did I just do?" I asked, bemused.

Silence followed. I'd never seen Noah so short of words.

Milo looked bemused too, but he'd let out his words in a whispery tone. "I think you just healed him." He said.

And I think it was safe to say that I finally understood the actual definition of instinct
