That evening, my eyes had flickered through the golden sparkle reflecting from my leather bag, whilst I'd slowly dipped my hand into it to retrieve the familiar content. The crown was still as beautiful as the first time I'd laid eyes on it (when Mama had decided to hand it over). And it was funny to think that I'd almost forgotten about its beautiful existence over the past few weeks spent in the vast stretch of the Zonke Forest.

But even despite its undeniable beauty, it still looked sort of old, obviously as a result of having being passed down from one generation to the other. Plus, it was also ornamented with five colourful gems, all of which signified unity of some sort, I'd come to know.

The colours went thus: Green, red, blue, then another blue, and finally, brown.

"The Green colour represents that of the banshee's eyes; the red is for the alpha; the two blues are for the beta; whilst the brown is apparently for the omega." Noah had taken his time to explain to me that evening . And to think I hadn't even thought of that..

"Noah, tell me something.. What was my mother like? I mean, what kind of a leader was she?" I further inquired desperately. Really, I was just so tired of being in the dark

. I'd already noticed how they stylishly avoided any question that had to do with her, and although I understood they must've found her death really painful, I still wanted to quench my desperate thirst for the whole truth.

And that particular evening, it seemed Noah was willing to grant me that simple wish.

"She was a fearless leader," He assured. "Her optimism is something that we really miss, to be honest. Even in the face of the worst of situations, she was always positive. Always," He said with even more emphasis. "We've been invaded by a couple of packs (of shape shifters), and thanks to her, we've suceeded in keeping this territory for so long."

"And well, we are counting on you to continue that legacy," he added much later, an afterthought.

Of course, I knew that was my duty as a banshee, but could I really do that? Could I really keep the pack together just like my Mother had done? Was my instinct strong enough? Despite my mother's supposed strength, a single attack from the vampires had been enough to destroy her.. What if I suffered the same fate?

If my mother had been really optimistic, then I was the complete opposite: A pessimist. If my mother had truly been fearless, then I differed in comparison: A scaredy-cat. How then could someone like me be trusted enough to be crowned a banshee?

Slipping back the crown into my leather bag, I let out a short, mental sigh. I could tell Noah could see through my thoughts; It was evident in the way he stared back at me, but he didn't say a word. Instead, he gave me a light pat on the arm.

"Can I ask you something else," I'd blurted yet again, when I'd mustered the urge to finally speak up. He nodded briefly. "What was the relationship between my mother and Milo?"

"And Noah," I warned. "Do not lie to me."

At this, I'd sensed his surprise, then his hesitation. It even took a long while for him to finally morph his words. "It's complicated," he offered noncommittally.

But I wasn't letting him off that easily.

. "We have enough time Noah. It's not like we're doing anything," I returned.

And short of excuse, he'd eventually decided to reveal it all. "It all happened between Shiela, Milo, and Thelma (the dead omega). A typical love triangle." He began, seemingly bored of the whole story.

"We shape-shifters have what we call a mate, or life partner to put simply. Like, it's also instinctive. When we see our mate, we immediately know they are our mate.. Milo's mate was Thelma, but the thing was, Milo didn't like Thelma. He had this huge crush on Sheila instead."

"And..?" I stressed.

"Sheila obviously didn't feel the same about him. So you can just imagine how awkward things used to be around here.. When the Vampires attacked, Thelma died in the process, your mother's pregnancy was like a stab in the chest for him and even after everything, she still died immediately after giving birth to you."

So you can just imagine how hurt the poor boy is.."

I was completely dumbfounded. I hadn't thought the story would be filled with so much drama.

"Look Lulu, you look exactly like your mother, and I know Milo might look at you some certain way every once in a while, but that's only because he truly loved, and still in fact, loves your mother. He looks at you, and he sees a little bit of her in you.."
