Esperance - Episode 21
Mum and I were brought to the airport by a taxi. Mia would come with Claire from school. I could see tear droplets in the corners of the eyes of my first love, my mother.. I got down from the cab. It was clear and calm and people were either going to book tickets, coming home or travelling, within and outside the country. . I walked over to the other side of the car to hold the door open for mum. She smiled. We waited for my girls... And my flight was in an hour. My phone rang, a smile parted my lips as I saw it was my love calling. "She must be the one calling" my mum said, looking genuinely happy I had found love. I gave Mia descriptions of where I was and cut the call. "I stood with your father the day he left" mum said looking into thin air. I held her close to me. "Do I look like I'm running off?" I asked with a smile. She shook her head. "There you are, a beautiful mum and her awesome son" Mia said loudly as she walked to where we stood. "She has such a sweet mouth" mum said spreading her arms to hug both of them. "Are we late" Claire asked. "You are here, just in time." I answered taking Mia in my arms. "I'll miss every part of you" she whispered "I will love you everyday" I said as I put on a charm bracelet on her slim wrist. "Let this always remind you I still love you" She threw her whole weight on me, her hands around my head, I love you forever Neil

. "If you love birds don't mind, Neil your flight leaves in fifteen minutes. Claire said.... "Mum, take care of Mia and Claire. And the both of you, ......look after my mum as she held unto me , sobbing softly. "I love you son, stay safe" .. She advised once more. I turned to leave but went right back and hugged Claire. "You'll always be my heroine" I said. "And you will always be my best friend" she said, sniffling "I love you Neil, be safe. We'll be waiting" she said, patting my back.. I left them, still waving, I spurn around so they wouldn't see tears that had encircled my eyes.

I hadn't gotten accustomed to the cold weather. The somewhat cold people. There was no vibrant tie and dye clothes worn. And no matter how civilized and forward it would seem, I still missed home. One night I went to have a drink and found myself staring at a man who even in the dim light looked like an older Neil. I ordered soda and before I could look back. His seat across the hall was empty. "I must be hallucinating" I thought as I finished my drink and left the bar. "There is no Alice without a jabberwocky. We just live our lives, hoping we find peace...so someday, we will look over our shoulders and smile with our wrinkled faces because we know what it means to smile and to cry, to lose, to live, to love and above all to hope.... Knowing we can always make a difference; we just needed to try" I smiled as I read this from a lighted signpost down the alleyway. I never stopped hoping even though it was the greatest trick nature uses against us.
