"Am I understood?!" That was the last thing I heard from Mr Nze the animal husbandry teacher which knocked me out of my fantasy..... He looked particularly at me. I couldn't help but echo "yes sir" and silently prayed he doesn't ask me question.

------------------------------------------

"From behind i heard a familiar voice. "Mr . Neil, can I have a word with you?" Our class counsellor had an unusual courtesy of addressing us as "Mister and Miss" "Sure ...........sir" adding the "sir" a bit late just to sound polite. "And by a word, I mean in my office" I replied "OK" trying very hard to mask my fears. Mr Nze Peter's office always reeked of old books and papers. There were shelves almost everywhere ...all laden with books. I always wonder if he actually reads all of those books neatly stacked there. He had just his desk, his chair and a visitor's chair; he never entertained more than one client. On his desk, there was a transparent container in the shape of an open box, there he kept his pens, rulers and his correction pen; those were the only things well kept on his desk, his files and books and documents and who knows what!.....were all in perfect disorder. On the same desk he kept a miniature Nigerian national flag too

. "He wants to create an impression of being patriotic" I thought, being thankful no one could read the thoughts of others. His ceiling fan hung a bit low which he put on as soon as we walked in and making a mess of his tattered desk. "Have a sit" he said gesturing at the sit. "And pardon my desk, its a total wreck" he said while keeping his face expressionless and giving a futile priority to arranging it. Why would the school employ such a stern looking man as a counsellor?" I asked myself...one look at him and you will end up forgetting whatever it is that you needed counsel on. His eyes were beady and almost had no eyebrows, making mention of an eyelash would be equivalent to wishing a vulture's head suddenly becomes full of hair, he had a broad nose and as much as a line in place of a lip. He fit his stout bulky self into his armchair. I smiled, saying thank you sir, then took my own seat. "So, Mr. Neil Dike what's happening?"he asked. Surprised at such an informal question. "Nothing?... Nothing is happening , sir" I answered . "Do me a favour and strip me of the 'sir' title for now" he said, putting on his glasses and glancing at a file he opened. I smiled, nodding. "Well, your subject teachers keep filing reports of your increasing poor academic performance, so I thought I should talk to you, if you would open up about any problem you have.... Then maybe I can be of help" "Sir, its just a minor problem. I can take care of it. I promise you won't get any more reports from now" I pleaded. "OK, young man, if you do not wish to discuss it. Its OK" he said. "Yes sir" I replied, feeling uneasy. "You can go now" he said, observing me for a moment. I got up and headed for the door . "Sure you will be fine?" He asked as I turned the door knob. "Yes sir" I answered... Contemplating on going back to tell him everything. I headed home deciding " man is not a man until he learns how to be a lone wolf" so even if he losses his entire pack, he wouldn't die off.
