Hazel Grace

She kept rubbing her neck as she walked away from the infirmary. That was one move that was capable to send her to the pits of darkness. She had been terrified but at the same time trusted her life in her hands. Whatever her cousin was hiding she had every intent of uncovering it. Eventually she hoped Becka would talk about it. As she walked past the library she noticed that it was open . A guard stood by the entrance. This meant she could actually grab a book for Becka if luck was on her side.

“Excuse me sir.”

“Yes Hazel, how may I help you?”

“Can I get some books from the library?”

“Yeah, sure.”

Becka may be guilty for whatever reason but when she came along Hazel Grace felt like she had family. It was only the third day but she had grown so fond of her.  She had always admired her cousin. When her mum had been alive they made frequent visits to Becka’s place. Her mum unfortunately had died living her father no choice but to remarry. He was in the army and had no time to take care of her. Her step mum was never accommodative. She had her ways of making Hazel’s life bitter. Things always ended up with her being harassed or even beaten for her step sibling’s mistake

. When her dad died in war, it drove the last nail into her coffin. She had opted for the streets. Fancy meeting her cousin in an approved school.

The guard escorted her into the library. The work load must have been too much on the librarian. She silently hoped he had kids to take care of him. Since the cubicles would be closed at this hour she opted to take the books to Becka before joining the rest in the morning duties. She also had classes to attend in the afternoon.

She held the three books steadily by her side then made haste towards the direction of the library. She felt the need to get there as quickly as possible. She quickened her step as she raced towards the infirmary. The door was bolted from the inside. Something was definitely wrong. The doors were just never closed.

“Becka.” She called banging at the door.

Silence.

“Guard! Somebody!”

Hazel Grace’s heart was beating fast. Was she trying to kill herself? Would she? Would she hung herself? But using what?”

“Guard!!!’’ She screamed again with more urgency in her voice not even noticing the guard was already opening the door. Others impatiently waited by him.  Hazel stood there feeling and living every moment. Did God hate her so much that she would just take every important family she had? She mumbled hysterically some in cognizable words. A guard who was standing placed his hands on her shoulders.

“Don’t cry, beautiful people don’t cry.”

She did not hear none of it. In her mind she had already formed the image of a dead Becka hanging from the ceiling. She wished she could rush in but was held back.

“I got a pulse.” She heard a nurse say.

“We have to rush her to the general hospital or we might lose her, I will follow all protocols we can at this level….’ The nurse continued.

As Becka was being wheeled away. Hazel rushed to the opposite direction. Family was family, even in Juvy.

Kim

As the Nissan sped away behind the vehicle carrying Antonina’s body. His mind went over the conversation they had at the station. He wasn’t remotely pleased with how it went. He just didn’t like the way the Detective was slowly but surely making him admit things he could not admit to himself. He was not ready to come to terms with them.

That was a very dumb move. Going over to kill Becka. He was now glad the detective had been there on time. Killing Becka would have only made him just like Becka. A cold blooded murderer. He was sure that detective would be calling each one of them to go over the statements they previously made. He hadn’t killed her girlfriend but somethings he did not want to go out in public at least not now when they were still mourning over Tony.

He had lost two phenomenal women in a span of five years. Nothing could be more traumatizing than this.
On that fateful day. He was summoned to the deputy principal’ office. His dad came to pick him up because they were supposed to be attending a social function. Looking back at it now, he should have sensed right there and then that something was not okay.

His dad drove, his main focus on the road. He did not ask him about school which was very unusual. He had naturally assumed it was something to do with work.  The only moment he realized something bad had happened was when his dad pulled at the park.  He got out of the car and motioned Kim to flow him.

In a fraction of a second the excitement he had of getting out of school was replaced by an agonizing feeling on his stomach. His knees barely supporting him, he followed his dad and settled beside him.

“Son you know I love you, right?”

“Yes dad…is everything okay?”

He looked at his dad.

. Tear were threatening to come out of the corners of his eyes. Touching his arm, he felt a form of sadness overwhelming his being. Something very bad must have happened.

“Dad tell me what’s happened. Is it mum or Giovanni?” he asked unable to withstand the agonizing twists in his stomach.

His dad pulled him to a tight hug and sobbed loudly and uncontrollably.

“Am sorry son, I didn’t know they was going to be a time I would be the bearer of such a bad news. Your mum was involved in an accident. We lost her.”

He remember the numbness he felt as he stared at his dad in denial. The sharp jab that he felt when it dawn on him that her mum was actually gone. He had hated passing through this area. The memory still brought tears to his eyes. It had been horrible. It had been horrible till he met the person who made him whole again.  He could not forget her mum ever, but friendship with this girl had made life feel like it had meaning all over again.

Then Antonina died and everything had to change once again.

Why should Becka attempt suicide, that will only break your mum, if she knows she's innocent, she shouldn't give up yet. Things will fall in place soon.
