The Fall Of The Giant, Anukili The Great - Episode 9
After the hut had been built and tied around Anukili, the music group sang with Anukili’s name. The masquerades performed their individual dances and so did the villagers until Anukili began his own dance. He danced round the people there with the hut, he was called great names and afterward, he began his journey from Ugwunadegbe to Odene River as was agreed. While Anukili was dancing to Odene River, the villagers were hailing and singing for him. Unknown to him, the elders had set ablaze the hut that was built on him
. The villagers who were singing and dancing became surprised and wondered what their elders were doing. Before Anukili could realize what was going on, the heat of the fire was already too much. He tried pulling the hut out but couldn’t because the hut was tied to him and he was weakened by the smoke from the fire.
He screamed “Alu! (Abomination), the people of Aguleri have done depravity to a great man.

. He ran frantically towards the River to quench the fire, but couldn’t bear the heat, pains and the smoke of the fire. Consequently, he fell down by the junction presently known as ‘Ogbumgbogu’

. When he fell, he vowed that the people of Aguleri will never produce a giant who will grow like him again. Immediately he gave up the ghost and was burnt to ashes.
The elders and Erenmuo became very happy. They hailed each other, saying their mission had finally been accomplished and Anukili will never harass or disturb anyone again.
The oldest man in Eziagulu who took Anukili’s matter to the elders, walked close to where Anukili’s ashes laid, bent down stared at Anukili for minutes and said to him in tears, “I warned you Anukili but you never paid attention to all I said to you. Now see how you ended up. Well I pity you Anukili but I have no other option. What I did was for us to be free from you and live in peace. So forgive us I beg you”, he said. Then he stood up, wiped his tears and walked away sadly. Immediately a heavy rain with thunderstorm began to pour down, people screamed, running away and abandoning Anukili’s body.
