Set me free - Episode 6

 

William:

"She saw me. She saw me not. She saw me. She saw me not. She saw me. Shit!" i stomp on the offensive branch.
"Get off the road, you miscreant!" the driver of a sedan car scream at me as he manages to avoid hitting me. I quickly cross to the other side of the road, still pondering if Dawn saw me push her father.
  I pull my phone out of my pocket and dial her number. My finger hover above the call icon but i can't bring myself to click on it . What am i going to say?
'Hey Dawn, I work in a supermarket and I'm the miscreant who pushed down your father." I'm going to get slapped for sure. And worse, she's never going to talk to me again.
 All through my three hours shift, I imagined various scenarios of Dawn coming back to the supermarket to catch me in my lie and spit in my face.
 I never should have lied to begin with. Come to think of it, it wasn't all my fault everyone thinks I'm a William anyways. My first week at the school, I'd wanted to join the football team so bad but like it is common in the school, the team wanted to know who my family was before I could enter. Peter who was also my classmate had come right out and say i was a Williams. Probably because of my name

. When i was asked to confirm it, i thought it was just a little white lie seeing as truly i am a William but the abandoned one. I regret it now. If i had been brave enough to say I'm a scholarship kid, i wouldn't be caught in the web of my own lies. I may get treated like Michelle, the only other scholarship kid in class but then there's dignity in loving who you are right? If Michelle could take the segregation for six years why couldn't i? I wasn't Michelle. She was the bravest person i know and i always respect her for that.

 A text bring me out from my musing and I quickly look down at my screen. It's a text from Dawn! She knows! Oh lord help your son to be strong for this impending heartbreak.
 I tentatively click on the text.

St Patrick cathedral
meet me there in an hour
PS wear something nice.

  My brows furrow in confusion. Was she going to break up with me in a church? Wear something nice? I scratch the back of my neck warily. This is going to be a break up of all times if she wants to make it all formal. The ready coward in me advises me to delete the message and deny ever seeing it but then i remember Michelle this afternoon when she got called out by the principal, she didn't run or hide even when peter made a rude comment. She faced her demons and I make a mental note to borrow a feather off her glorious wing of braveness. Now, I'm getting all poet for Michelle. God save me so i don't run mad from this heartbreak.
 Dawn wants me to dress up nice for this? I would. But before that, I'll come clean about everything. I'll tell her I'm an illegitimate son living with an alcoholic mother. I have to bite down on my shaky lips to stop myself from cowering back to my lies.
  I will give her the truth this time. Then it's her choice to take me or dump me.

 Dawn:
"Are you sure, you want to do this?" Diana asks for the umptenth time and i nod.
"You said you would help me get out of a situation like this sis." I plead and she sigh
"i know but getting married? I can get you out of the country. Away from dad and his manipulations but marriage at this age?" she shake her head ruefully.
"I love him, sis."
"You're too young sweetheart. Feelings at this age are fleeting. You may come to regret this." she insist and it's my time to shake my head.
"no. What i feel is real. I know it. Remember Jacob, the one you really loved before dad forced this marriage on you?"
"ofcourse i remember him." she says sadly.
"if you had a chance to marry him back then, won't you?" i ask
"you know i will." 
"Then help me do this. I want to help dad save the company as well as remain happy." i say and she nod.
"you have always been so brave. I wish you happiness baby sister." she finally relent and engulf me in her warm hug.
"i love you." i sob into her neck.
"love you too kiddo."
"not going to be a kiddo for long." i joke to lighten the mood as i pull away from her.
"this is insane." she laughs as she alight the car.
"you can do this, dawn. This is both for your family and for you.

. You can have both." i tell myself.
"Ready to get married, little sis?" Diana calls from outside the window and i nod. She helps me with the door as she hand me over to the white priest.
"i already signed as the witness." she says to the priest who smile at her.
"Thank you for doing this at such short notice." she continues
"Anything for you, daughter." The priest who is the god father of Jacob whom my sister loves pat her back lovingly. I catch the glint of tears in Diana's eyes before she sniff them back. This only steel my resolve to never be in an arranged marriage.
"i should be going before Charles gets home." she says, talking about her husband. I know how he can get when he doesn't know where my sister is.
 I hug Diana briefly before letting her go.
"you look so beautiful in that dress. Take pictures, okay?" she instructs and i nod.
"I'll just take a cab. You'll need the car to get back to my place later." she says before hurrying away.
"you ready?" the priest asks and i nod. This is it dawn. You are marrying your first love. Dont get all nervous now.
"let's go." i say as he escorts me towards the church
"he's inside already." an altarboy inform us when we reach the huge doors of the church. My heart beat increase as a million butterflies go crazy in my stomach.
"This is it." the priest whispers to me as the altarboy push the doors open and Williams eyes connect with mine..
