Redemption - Episode 13

 

Benedicta:
  I made the kind taxi driver drive me around town for hours just to clear my head but right now as I stand just few steps from my door, am more confused than I was when I left the house this morning. I know I was supposed to speak with Luis about the baby but he just made me so angry. My aching head combined with my aching back make me long for my bed . I better just sleep this off.
  I walk the remaining distance to my door and twist the handle open.
"Where are you coming from?" My dad's voice which sounds unusually cold startle me and i let out a shocked gasp. Why am I so jumpy. Act natural.
"Umm am sorry dad. I--" my dad doesn't let me finish before he rise from his favoutite chair in the sitting room and walk towards the door which I haven't even let go of.
He looks me from my head to my toe before his eyes rest on my tummy. I have the immense urge to wrap my hands around it but I stay stock still. Why is he acting strange? He can't possible know.
"What are you sorry for Benedicta?" He asks me as he brings his eyes back to mine. I swallow down the lump size spit that feels like it's stuck in my throat but still nothing comes out.
"I said what are you sorry for?!" He yells at me face and I yelp.
"Is it for the lies? Tell me!" He yells again.
"Dad" I sob out. I can't control my emotions

. He knows. I can see it in his eyes. The shame. The disgust.
I stretch my hand towards him but he moves back with horror like I am infected with the world's deadliest poison.
"What did I do to you? Where did I go wrong?" He's crying too and I can't watch. It hurts. I have disgraced my family. All because of lust.
"Am sorry." That's all I can say. His eyes change suddenly and it becomes hard.
"Leave my house." He grind out and I am shocked beyond words.
"What?"
"I said get out!" He screams louder this time. He grabs my hand and starts to drag me out the still open door. My hand instinctively go around my tummy to protect my baby. That's the first time I felt like a mother.
"What's going on?" I hear Philip ask and my eyes goes to him and my dad let's go of me. He is wiping sleep off his eyes as he walks down the stairs towards us.
"Bennie what's wrong?" He asks when my dad doesnt reply. I turn pleading eyes to Philip. I don't want him to find out. He's going to hate me too. Just like my dad does. I shake my head at him.
"Your sister is pregnant." My dad just drops the bomb and the room goes silent.
"Wh--at" Philip stutter.
"That can't be true. Bennie tell me it's not true." He pleads but I just shake my head.
"I want her out of my house this instance."my dad declares.
"But dad__" Philip is cut short when my dad grab me again.
"I would not have you under my roof. You insolent child you go behind my back and get yourself pregnant. How do I face my congregation. How do I face your mom when I die and meet her?" he keeps ranting while pulling me by my arm.
"Dad, stop it. Where do you want her to go in this condition? Are you doing to throw your only daughter out in the street?" Philip try to pull me out of dad's hold but my dad doesn't let go and it is starting to hurt.
"Are you going to fight your father also? Did I not train all of you right?" My dad question Philip who looks appalled and reluctantly stop struggling with my dad.
"Let go, please. You are angry right now. You would regret this later, dad." Philip try to plead but my dad is having none of that. He keeps pulling me till I am out the gate. People are starting to gather as I am pushed out on the street floor.
I can hear murmurings around me but I focus on my dad.
"Dad, please. It was a mistake. Dad I am sorry" I grab a hold of my dad's leg as I beg. He turns away from me and I know he's crying too with the way his shoulders are shaking.
"I can't look at you right bow Benedicta. You have broken my heart into a thousand pieces." He sobs.
"Dad.."
"Please dad. Listen to her. Please" Phillip begs from the sideline. I use my dad's leg as support and stand to my feet.
"Dad" I wrap my hands around his waist tight. I am never letting go.
"Daddy please. I can't get through this without you. I need you, dad. I am scared. Dad." I say into his back.
"My baby" I hear him sob out.
"Daddy."
"Move out of the way. Benedicta?" My eyes go wide as I hear the familiar voice. Luis? I let go of my father and look behind me to see Luis looking haggard. What's he doing here.
"Baby. I am sorry for shouting at you earlier. I want our baby. I want to be with the both of you."tears are flowing down his cheeks. I look away from him to my father who is looking at Luis like he wants to strangle him. It takes just few seconds for my dad's restraint to snap and he lunge himself at Luis and assault his face with a punch. Luis fall to the ground as I scream in horror. There's blood.
I crouch down beside Luis in worry.
"Are you okay?" I ask and he nods.
"My God, you are bleeding. Am so sorry. I caused all this." I use my shirt to brush the blood that's sprayed on his lips and chin but stop when a blue dress fall beside me. Other clothes follow and I turn back to see my dad throwing my things at Luis and I.
"Dad" Philip tries to gather the clothes.
"Get inside the house this instance young man."my dad spit at him before turning back to us.
"I don't want to see the both of you here. Ever!" He declares before pushing the reluctant Philip inside the house and shutting the door.
"Dad. Dad!" I rush to the door and pound on it
"You are hurting yourself baby" Luis who is now standing beside me say silently.
"He hates me." I sob out and rest my aching fore head on the door. Luis's hands go around me in that moment and he kisses my temple.
"Come on baby. It's getting cold. We will come back tomorrow."
"You sure?" I ask him and he nods before taking my hand.

Luis:
I have her now. Ecstasy is what I am feeling right now. I can't believe her dad made it easy and handed her over to me on a platter.
  I help her carry her suitcase as I lead her into my father's compound. She looks uncertain and falters at the front door. I drop the briefcase and take her hand.
"Listen, baby. I am here for you. Everything would be okay? Alright?" I say to her then brush my lips over her knuckles. She sigh deeply before nodding.
"Good girl. Now, come on." I pull the door open and lead her into the sitting room.
"Mom?" I call out eagerly to my mother. I want her to see my bride.
My dad walks out at this same minute.
"Good evening dad" I greet and he grunts his reply while scrutinizing Benedicta.
"Oh Benedicta this is my dad. And dad this is benedicta. My wife." My dad's eyes fly to me as soon as I ass the last part.
"Your what?" he asks.
"My__" I don't finish my sentence before my dad land a blinding slap across my cheek. What the hell. Why isn't he happy for me? Benedicta who has been beside me all this while moves tentatively to hide behind me.
"Are you crazy? How old is she? 14, 15?"he spit out.
"She's 18" I correct.
"I don't care. Take her back to her family? Hell, who gives such a young girl out to a man who hasn't paid anything on her head? Where did you get her from? The wh*re house?" My dad rant and benedicta whimper behind me.

. I can feel anger rising inside me. How dare he insult her?
"How dare you call her a wh*re?" I almost lunge at me father but Benedicta grab my hand.
"Please. Let's leave" she whisper. I grind my teeth.
"You better get ready to become grand pa" I spit out before in pull Benedicta out of the house.
We are soon outside my dad's compound and I hail down a cab.
"The car park" I tell the driver who nods and starts the car.
"Where are we going?" Benedicta question apprehensively and I just pat her hand.
"To Benin. That's where I live now."
"But my dad__" I place my index finger against her lips to shut her lips.
"We will be back but I need to take you away from here because I don't want them stressing you. You may lose our baby. Do you want that?" I ask and she shakes her head.
"Good, now rest okay? I promise to take care of you till the day I die" I promise. She reluctantly rest her head on my shoulder as the driver drive towards the car park.

   They will all pay. Lucas. My dad. They are all jealous that I have got the girl.
