Redemption - Episode 18

 

Lucas:

"Son. You and your brother are worrying me. What did you fight about?" My mom sob as she cleans my face wounds. My face hurts like hell but I grab her hand and squeeze it in comfort.
"Mom. Don't cry. It was just a misunderstanding." I tell her but she shakes her head.
"Luis was fuming mad. Is this about that girl?" She asks and I go stiff.
"I am right aren't I? She's pregnant for your brother Lucas . Let it go." She tells me.
"But mom__"I try to defend myself but she cut me off.
"No buts Lucas. Look at you. Your brother nearly killed you for that girl. He's so in love with her that he even disobeyed your dad. Let it go okay?for me? I don't want the both of you to hate each other. He's the only sibling you have" she grab my hand and give me a pleading look. I can't let my mom cry without doing anything to stop it.
"OK mom. I never intended to pursue it anyways. I will leave for port Harcourt tomorrow and I won't bother the both of them again. I promise. Now, wipe your tears." My mom wrap her hands around me in a fierce hug and I breath in her scent. I might not get to hold her like this again any time soon because I am leaving. I don't think I want to come back again till I have moved on.
"I love you mom" I whisper into her hair and she rub my back soothingly.

. It's been three days. Three days of torture. I have cried till there are no tears to shed. I have screamed my voice till I lost it but I am still in here. Luis comes here before going to work to give me enough food for the day and tell me he loves me then as soon as he is back, he would bring me treats he got from work. I haven't spoken a word to him since my pleading fell on deaf ears. The only reason I eat is because of my baby. I have to make sure the both of us get out of this alive.

The wall clock tells me it's few minutes past six so i know the monster would be here any minute. I can't just keep sitting here. I need to find a way to get out of this hell but how?
  I am so weak from eating just few spoons of rice this afternoon which I threw up right after. I can't possibly fight Luis. He's a man. Then fight him like a woman. My subconscious tell me. We don't use our fist but our mind. Play his game and beat him at it. Yes, that's what I am going to do. I can't fight him but I have what he wants. My love. I just have to let him think he has it and when I have his trust, I will make a run for it. Even if I have to roll on the dirt and beg my father, I would. My family is my only ally.

"Baby, I am home" I grind my teeth in determination as I hear his footsteps get closer. As soon Luis open the door, I launch myself at him. He's affronted at first but then I peck his cheek.
"I missed you baby. Why are you late?" I look up into his eyes. He looks confused.
"Umm I ummm wanted you to taste the pasta at the new eatery close to my office so I made a stop there to get it." He hands me a bag and I take it cheerily.
"Thank you baby. You know how much I love pasta. Come here. You need a kiss for this." I stand on tiptoes and peck his lips. He doesn't kiss me back so I pout at him.
"Baby? Are you angry at me? I know I have been difficult this past few days but it's just pregnancy hormones. You know I love you right?" I ask him.
"You love me?" He asks and I nod.
"Of course. Come on. Let's eat this together. I would go get the plates but you don't want me to leave this room so__" I trail the word and he shakes his head.
"This is your house too. Go get the plate while I freshen up." He tells me.
He looks at me a little strangely before walking out of the room to change in his own room. I quickly take the freedom he is offering and walk to the sitting room. I spy the outside gate and it's locked like I know it would be. At least I am out of that room. I get a plate and dish the pasta for the both of us. I set the dining table we have never used before and even pour some wine in a glass for Luis.
  Few minutes later, Luis walks out with only his Pajama's bottom. He's shirtless but I only feel my skin crawl with disgust.
He walks up to where I am standing beside the dining table and gets to his knees.
"Baby, I am so sorry for how I acted. I was just so angry. I saw you with him an___ never mind. It's over now. I promise to treat you like a queen you are. You and our baby would be happy with me. I promise." He kisses my stomach before standing up to kiss my lips. I want to puke in his face but I hold it down.
"It is okay baby. I was wrong. Forgive me too." I say even though I know I never cheated. I can't remember much from the party and I know the drink I took got me drunk and I was with a guy but I know I didn't do anything because that's not who I am. No matter the alcohol in my system, I can never do that. I don't try to defend myself less he gets angry. I just pull away from him.
"Come on. Let's eat." He looks happy as he settles down in a chair beside me.
"Let's make a toast. To our family." I say and raise my glass of water. Luis cheerily raise his glass and clinks mine.
"Cheers." He says but doesn't drink the wine. He sets it down on the table.
"After you." He says, gesturing to the food and smile. I grab my fork and take a mouthful. The idiot thinks I would poison him.
"Oh baby. It is delicious. You are the best" I say even if I can't taste anything but grief in my mouth. He blushes at my praise before taking his fork and joining me.

Three weeks later.

Luis rolls out of bed after having his way with me and I can't wait for him to leave so I can scrub his smell off my body. I get more desperate ever day I have to live with this man. He hasn't laid his hand on me again but I know that monster is still in there. If I make the wrong move, he would show up again. For the past two weeks he has made sure to lock the gates before moving for work and even hide the keys when we sleep. I am almost three months pregnant but I haven't gotten any anti natal treatments or something. I have to get out of here.
  Luis doesn't even leave his phone close by so I would call the police or my family. He tries to show my love by giving me attention and different goodies but I want my freedom away from him. I have waited too long. I have to put my plans into action now. I make sure Luis isn't in sight before I take the knife I stashed in here from under our mattress. I bite my teeth before I place the knife against my inner thigh and slash myself. It stings. Blood trickles down my legs and I smirk.
I take in a deep breathe before screaming my lungs out.
Luis rushes out of the bathroom to see me writhing on the floor.
"It hurts. Luis, help me" I mo*n on the ground, grabbing my stomach.
"What? Are you okay? I mean what's wrong?" He crouches on the ground beside me looking really worried.
"The baby. I think I am having a mid___aaargh" I breath heavily through my mouth.
"Ahhhhhhhrgh baby. Hospital. It hurts. The baby is going to die." Luis springs up into action at this.
"Don't worry baby. I.would get you to the doctor. Our baby won't die. He can't" Luis pull on a T-shirt before carrying me in his arms and racing out the house towards the car his company just gave him.
He deposits me in the passenger seat before hurrying to his side of the car. He starts the car and zooms into the dark night

"Doctor! Doctor! Somebody help!" Luis yell as he barges into the hospital with me in his arms. I am now shedding crocodile tears.
"Baby!!!" I scream as I dig my hand into his fore arm. He groans in pain and I smile inwardly. Once I get out of here, he would rot in prison for raoe and assault.
A nurse meets us at the reception hall then a stretcher is pushed out and luis places me carefully on it.
Luis holds my hand I they push me into a private room.
"Our baby. She's been screaming in pain all through the ten minutes drive Here. There's also blood. Nurse please. Save her. Save my baby." Luis plead.
"Sir, you are disrupting our work. I need you to step out. Your wife is in safe hands." Luis hesitates for a moment but then I scream out in pain again and the nurse pushes him out.
"Listen, I need to lift your dress up okay?" The nurse says when I don't let go of my dress.
"I am fine. I need your help please. That man out there is holding me against my will. Listen, you must also have a doctor like me. I am only eighteen years old. I need to go home to my dad." I sob out silently.
The nurse looks at me dubiously. I raise my skirt up for her to see my slashed thigh.
"Look at this. I had to stab myself and pretend miscarriage just to get out of the house. Please." I cry into my palms when she starts walkinh out of the room probably to call Luis back in.

"Sir, your wife's case is serious. Help me call the doctor. He's in his office I hear the nurse tell Luis outside. I hear his footsteps departing and I look at the nurse with shiny eyes.
"Take off your clothes" the nurse commands and I look at her confused.
"Come on. That man looked so anxious. He would be back any minutes now. Take my uniform and leave." I quickly shoot out of the bed at this and in few minutes, I am in a nurse's uniform. She's a little fatter than me but it would work.
"Thank you so much ma. I would never__" I hear footsteps again and my eyes go wide.
"No need for all that. Get out of here." She whisper yell.
