Saturday came sooner than expected and my girls were hurrying me to meet Nonso in the car. "Now remember all I taught you", Amaka said, "When you greet his father ensure he pats your back, igbo men love that", "and when you greet his mother, ensure your knees touch the ground, respect is very important to a Yoruba mother", Uju added very quickly.
"I trust you'll do well dear, you're a very likeable person, they'll love you!" Nneka said just as we reached Nonso's car.
"HEY NONSO!!!", they chorused, "Hi ladies, hope we're all good" he replied not expecting an answer, his fashion designer was really good, his Ankara was neatly sewed, the purple colour made him look simple yet very elegant, he was handsome, "we're good", I replied and kissed him lightly on his lips. He looked at me, oh the glow on his face was pleasing . I noticed how his eyes lit up when I was close to him, I felt so loved at that moment.
"Oya oya, let's not keep mummy and daddy waiting", Uju said as she practically pushed the both of us to enter the car.
I took one last look at the mirror and the girl staring back was so beautiful, yet it all didn't feel right still.
The journey to his parents place was very awkward, I could understand my tensed up state, his own tension was not so understandable, it was his parents we were going to see after all, or wasn't it?
I was preoccupied with various thoughts, ranging from why Nonso was so tensed to why the car appealed to my sense of comfort and back to why the upcoming wedding felt so wrong.

We soon arrived at a black gate that looked like the entrance to a castle, and after what seemed like a long wait, the gate opened by itself. I was stunned already and we've not spent up to a minute at his place.
You know that smile you have when you know that you've impressed someone you really want to impress? Nonso had it on his face

. I couldn't help but blush. His parents house was really something to behold.
All through, we were both quiet, I felt like he was allowing me to take it all in, they had a beautiful garden and for the first time in my life I saw butterflies with actual beautiful and bright colours.
He parked the car and dramatically said "Honey, welcome to my little heaven".
His parents were waiting at the door, throwing us huge smiles and I couldn't help but notice the two men who stood by their sides like guards. Then I came to my senses!
"Wait a second! Big house, flashy cars, guards with uniforms, Nonso! You come from royalty!"
I said utterly shocked.

To my surprise, he laughed hard. "I don't come from royalty o, my parents are just rich, don't worry, you'll see." He said and led me to their front. I was finally meeting his parents. "Mom, dad, meet my fiancee, Diana" He said, I took one step closer to them and went straight to my knees, "Good afternoon sir, good afternoon ma" I said.

"Nwayi oma, you're welcome to our home" his dad said as he pat my back with his very large horsetail. That was one point for me.
"My daughter, welcome", his mum said as she helped me up. It was hard to tell that she was not Igbo. She was light in complexion and had a really nice accent. I felt really loved, yet it all felt wrong.

"Please come in, Nonso will show you to your room so you can refresh while I prepare lunch" his mother said. I needed no one to tell me that I'd decline the offer to "stay idle while my mother-in-law to be was busy in the kitchen" so I just insisted to go with her to the kitchen while we walked inside.
The house was a mansion, I was sure I'd get lost before I left there.

Lunch turned out great, no one would believe we (Nonso's mom and I) didn't touch anything in the kitchen, all we did was order the maids around, something like "Adaeze, put one more pinch of salt into that pot, Nkechi, take the kettle off the cooker and pour the boiling water into the pot of fish", but it still turned out great.
I got to realize that things were not really as they seemed, this family wasn't really happy, there was more to them than the eye met, but because I was just a visitor, I didn't act like something was wrong, but it was.

"What does your father do Diana?" His mother asked me, with a smile that said 'I don catch you today', I have never lied about my parents profession, I didn't see the need 'cos they trained me well, sent me to a good University, paid my fees and now that I'm making money, I'm more proud to have them as my parents.
"My dad is a teacher in the Lagos State government college ma", I replied with a smile that said 'don't you dare'.
"I knew it!" She said, banged the dining table with her two hands, making the rest of us drop our spoons, "I knew it Nonso, you've brought home another golddigger, can you ever do anything right in your life?!"

I was stunned.
