"Excuse me ma!..." I tried to defend myself, I was no where near being a gold digger, I didn't even know Nonso was rich till today. "Excuse yourself young lady! Beggers don't talk back to me and they're certainly not allowed to have opinions in this house!" She cut me short.

"Ahn Ahn Peju! That's enough! What's this supposed to mean?" Nonso's dad defended me. "When you're done quenching your hunger, go back and tell your wretched parents that you can't marry my son! 'E le fe omo mi!!' ah!" She clapped her hands as she yelled at me . I felt so dirty.

"Honey, I'm so sorry about this, my mother can get a little out of place sometimes, let's just get out of here." Nonso said. "No my son, it's a far journey back, at least spend the night, I'll talk to your mother", his dad suggested, I didn't feel safe, I felt like that night was going to be my last but I was determined to forgive Nonso's mom so I agreed to spend the night.

"It's okay, I perfectly understand", I told Nonso, and I did understand everything that was going on, his mother was only concerned about the well-being of her son, it was normal.
After lunch, Nonso and I had some alone time and I told him he had to explain to his mum that we met at work where they pay us well and I didn't know about his wealthy family before today. He promised to do that and reassured me that nothing would come in the way of our love, I felt happy yet it all still didn't feel right.
I loved Nonso a lot and I didn't know why I felt so odd about the marriage.

Just then, my phone rang

. It was Uju.
" Hi baby girl, how was lunch?", she asked excitedly, I could tell I was on loud speaker but I wasn't in the mood to talk then, plus Nonso and his dad were there, it would have been rude to spend up to an hour on the phone in front of them.  So I just promised to call them back at night. My voice was off an they sensed it so they kept on asking what was wrong before I disconnected the call.

"Sir, Otunba Bola is here to see you, he waiting in the reception", one errand boy came to inform Nonso's dad, or was he a guard? I couldn't tell, it was so confusing. "Okay kids, this is business, excuse me", he said as he got up, then he paused and turned to Nonso and said, "Son, make sure she enjoys her stay", with a light wink. I blushed and Nonso grinned. "So what's the plan son?", I asked while making conscious efforts to sound like his dad and simultaneously trying hard not to laugh, he laughed however. "Let's start with a tour, shall we?" He said, got up and held my hand like a prince asking a princess to dance, "yes we shall", I replied with a smirk and got up.

The tour was wonderful, the mansion had three boy's quarters, thirteen rooms and eight cars. I also learned his father had one private jet. I now knew why his mom would think I came for their money, as an igbo girl, I was already mapping out plans to get rich from Nonso, in case I needed to, the money was just too much. Nonso had a different personality in his father's house, he seemed a little bit proud and I could bet his shoulders were raised, he even walked like a prince. He was as romantic as ever, making me feel like I was in one of those fairytales. The tour came to an end after what seemed like forever and I was legit exhausted, the house was that big. It was time to prepare for dinner, Nonso showed me to my room again where I got a shocker.
He left me at the door, I walked in and on my bed, I met a beautiful dinner gown, lovely suitable jewelries and a makeup artist waiting.
"What's going on here??" I asked no one in particular, expecting an answer and my face clearly read confusion.
"The dress is yours, for dinner, prepare quickly", Nonso's mom said, I didn't notice when she walked in but I certainly didn't like the sound of this. It all looked shady, something was up.
"I don't understand ma", I said, still looking confused. She rolled her eyes and replied me,
"We're having a dinner party to celebrate your engagement to my son tonight, a few friends are coming over, do prepare".

"Ghen ghen", I thought to myself.

My troubles shall start with a dinner party!
