I couldn't feel my legs, my chest felt heavy and my head was burning. My gaze was still blurry but I managed to look round, I saw Uju sitting close to my bed, her eyes were swollen, she must have cried a lot, she always had the most fragile emotions and was a big softie inside, she studied how to cheer people in the hospital up from YouTube videos and I'm sure that's why she was wearing a beautiful bright yellow gown designed with flowers, she didn't know I was up already, I wasn't even sure I was up, it all felt like a dream, I only knew was getting married, then I remembered Nonso and my head stung! I passed out again.
It was about eight hours before I regained consciousness, this time it was for real. I tried to talk but couldn't utter a word, my mum and Uju were present this time . "Mum?", I mumbled, " Diana, oh my daughter, how are you feeling? You should rest some more", she said amidst tears. I felt a whole lot of things but I certainly couldn't describe. "Nonso, where is he? How is he? I want to see him", I said and made to get up, something held me back to the bed, I couldn't move my legs. "What's wrong with my leg mum???!! I can't move my legs!" I yelled, waking Uju from her sleep.
"Calm down D," she said, she calls me 'D' most times and I kind of liked it, "you broke both legs but the doctors have assured us that they will heal soon".
"Well if I can't get to Nonso, please let him come to me", I turned to Uju trying to sound lively, "Uju, please bring me my husband to be".
She shook her head leaving me to wonder why, "What happened to Nonso?!!", I practically screamed and was getting ready to faint again when Uju replied, "relax, he's in a coma, the doctors are still trying to figure out what's wrong with him and how his life can be saved, he's currently hanging between life and death", she told me and quite frankly, that was a huge shocker, but I didn't react, something kept me calm and hopeful.
Just then, a familiar voice echoed from afar, "I knew it! Where is that witch that is trying to kill my son??! Where is she??!" I could hear her footsteps, loud and angry, the doctors tried to calm her but she paid no attention to their existence, she finally found my room.
"Madame Lucy", I said and tried to give a smile.
"Don't speak to me! If you know what is good for you, just find a way to make my son better, tell your coven that you didn't see my son o!", Shock was clearly written on Uju's face and my mom would have given her a smack down if I hadn't signalled to her to let it be.
"Ma'am, we have some information about your son's health." The doctor in charge walked in, saving us a whole lot of drama.
Nonso's mom was all barks and no bite, I knew it, she was a drama queen, a noise maker, but on the inside, she was harmless. Her person could be confusing at times too, but that's just how she was.
After some minutes of awkward silence and heavy sighs, she returned with the doctor, apparently to break some news to us.
My mom wasn't there when they returned, she had to go home so it was just Uju and I.
From the look on their faces and judging by how sober Madame Lucy had become, I was certain that the news wasn't good.
"We will be flying Nonso to India for an operation, the accident affected his spinal cord and he might lose his ability to walk if immediate action is not taken." Nonso's mom said, and for the first time in forever, she was actually talking and I wasn't sensing hate or mischief in her tone.
I sunk into my bed, I wanted to pass out, but I didn't.
What a tragedy, I sighed.
