Brothers - Episode 2

 

Isabel walked around the emergency ward and took up the case note of a patient to make notes, she was one of the junior doctors and was usually the first on call to see patients before she called in her seniors. Dr Raymond and Dr Alex, were one of the senior doctors in the hospital. Dr Alex was presently in the call room and the night had been quiet so far.

As she made notes on the patient she was facing who had pneumonia, a patient was suddenly rushed in and she stopped what she was doing

"What happened?", she asked as they pulled the patient into the bed 

"She was shot" the relative replied in tears as Isabel, seeing the bullet wound, wore her gloves and set to work.

The brothers had agreed to meet with the family lawyer Barr. Patrick Ekwueme in his office that Friday . He stared at them after they sat down and sighed

"Your father sure knew what he was doing when he made the will....." he began

"No I don't think so, everyone knew he was sick" Richard said fingers on his forehead, the other arm crossed

" Richard" Raymond called

"My brother knows next to nothing about the business, I've been with my father through it all, he can't write it off to him".

" Maybe you should remember am the eldest "Raymond said calmly looking at him

" Eldest my foot"Richard turned to him" where were you when I was going around with father making deals, helping with the business.....you were busy with your books" he said it like it was a bad thing

"You have your own company and an estate, why you interested in the family business as well"

"Because I built it with father with my sweat" Richard said "you don't know shit about it"

"I can't be here for this" Raymond stood up.

"Maybe since your such a nice person you can forget the will and give it to the person who can manage the business" Richard said

"No I would never do that, I would rather see you in court" Raymond replied

"Oh yeah?" Richard stood up facing him

"Sit down..both of you" Barr. Patrick said, he was in his sixties and had been the family lawyer before they were born, he was more of a father figure and family friend, they sat down after glaring at each other

"Your mother is grieving, she doesn't need any of this....

. I called you both because I don't want you going to court and washing your dirty linens in public, you are brothers...I want you to settle this amongst yourselves and get back to me" he said firmly

"But the will, it can't be altered, it was my father's last wish"..Raymond said

" Because it favours you" Richard said acidly " I worked my ass out for that company Raymond, building it from scratch, I'm not just gonna hand it over".

" It was father's business, you didn't build nothing, and rude awakening bro, I already have it" Raymond said

Barr Patrick decided it was a waste of time trying to get them to talk in his office,  he sighed as he wondered at their father's decision, one would think he would leave it with the son who knew everything about the company

"See you in court" Richard said finally as he stood up pointing at his brother before he went out the door.

Isabel was cooking in the kitchen, slicing the onions for the stew she was making, she usually came to spend weekends with Richard when she wasn't on call in the hospital, she didn't turn when Richard walked into the kitchen, stared at her than sauntered close

"Baby.." he said puting his arms around her waist

"Let go of me Richard.. I'm with a knife"

Undeterred he spinned her around and took her lips in his

"You so bloody hot babe"he said roving his hands down her, she elbowed him out of the way and went to get salt to put in her stew

" Come on, you still angry with me, what did I do?"

"Its funny how you usually don't know what you did" she replied

"The only thing I did was to fall in love with you" he said sitting on the counter

why did he always take everything as a joke, she wondered

" Richard, I'm being serious"

"Fine what did I do?"

She turned to look at him"just let me be the only girl...that's not too much to ask is it? " she said

He was surprised as he came down and went closer to her

"Whoever said there was another?" he asked

"Because you keep lying and keeping late nights" she said, he hadn't returned early the night before, and she was asleep before he had joined her in bed

"Baby you know you're the only one for me, you're the only woman in my life" he said against her neck kissing  on it

She pushed him away

"Sandra saw you with a girl last night....at the club." she said

He was surprised then he chuckled and moved away

" That lying bitch, you know she wants me, she had always wanted us to break up....you shouldn't listen to everything your friends say" he said "not all of them mean well" he explained

Isabel just rolled her eyes and continued her cooking, she didn't know why she kept putting up with this, he was a lying swine but she loved him too much to leave, besides she had put in too much into the relationship to just let it go

"Baby it's not anything at all....those girls are just flings"he explained

"Oh so you admit you're cheating"she asked shocked

"What no..I mean.." he paused"why don't I make it up to you, let's go out tonight"he drawled

"I'm in no mood for that Richard"she said, why did he think he could always bribe her?

He sighed "fine, I ll be in the living room when you're done sulking" he walked out of the kitchen while Isabel finished cooking.

Raymond just finished speaking with his lawyer before he decided to call his girlfriend, she sounded very busy and the place was noisy

"Can you call me back please" she said

"Yeah of course" he cut.

She called him back later at night

"Sorry I've been so busy, we just got back in the hotel"

"Oh ok, hows it going?"

" it's fine, did you guys still see  Barr Patrick?"she asked

"It's no use Jess, my brother is a dickhead, he refuses to listen to reason"

"I think you should leave it with him"she said after a pause

" what do you mean, are you saying I might likely loose the case"

"I'm saying its no point fighting over it, your brother clearly has more knowledge of the company"

"I have more claim" he said

"And time for it.." she continued "Richard has more time, you should focus more on your patients rather than fighting with him over the company, just my thought" she said

"Can't believe you're taking sides".

"I'm not baby, just think on it, you know your brother would handle it better than you would"

"I know, but I just feel my father had a reason willing it to me, I have to respect his decision"

She sighed "That's true, well I hope you guys settle, hate that rift you guys create between yourselves "she said

He sighed and roved his face, he hated it too, Richard was his blood and the only brother he had, he just hoped he could respect his father's dying wish and please everyone at the same time.

" My lawyer says I have a case " he said.
