“I am sorry about your husband.”

I read aloud as he showed his tab to me but I only smiled.

He had nothing to be sorry for.

“Why? It’s not your fault. Besides, I had invited you. If anything at all, I should be the one to apologise and not the other way round.

He managed a smile and then we were both quiet again. If not for the music that was being played, everywhere would have be awkwardly quiet . Since my husband left, we have been sitting down, talking and going through pictures. For some reason, I was at peace with this man. I was quite surprised he wasn’t even embarrassed with the way my husband had bumped in on us some  hours ago. Now we were both sitting down, holding a plate each which contained slices of cake.

“So, tell me about yourself? Where are you from?” I began, holding the spoon to my mouth.

He sighed and putting down his plate, he held his tab and began to type.

“NO where.”

I almost burst into laughter. “Well, it’s okay, I won’t ask you if you don’t want to say.”  I noticed he wasn’t laughing but was showing me another thing. When I read it, my heart sank.

“What happened to Freddie’s dad?” I read it aloud, trying not to betray my emotions

. I knew he had heard what Tommy said.

Should I tell him…should I not?

“He died.” I replied but he was typing more…I wasn’t convenient with this…he shouldn’t ask me any question, this is personal….I said in my mind.

How many years ago was that?” He asked again.

“Six.” I quickly replied. “It was today actually.” I found myself talking without any reason. The truth was that it was always painful knowing he had died the same day his son was born. Each time I had to celebrate Freddi’es birthday, I had to remember I lost another Freddie that day. Each year, I was always keeping it inside without having anyone to share it with but sitting with this nice looking innocent man who has issues with his speech…like Freddie had….it was like, I could say anything to him and I found myself not stopping.

“He died when my son was born. We were not yet married. We don’t know what happened to him. His wallet was burnt but I recognized it when it was brought home. We concluded that he got burnt in the fire outbreak of many years ago. His mother died few months later.” My voice was quavering now and I was shaking as I recalled that terrible night.

I and his mother had waited in the hospital for him but we couldn’t reach him. He didn’t tell me where he was going. He only told me it was a surprise but I begged him not to. He said it was going to change our lives forever. He was so excited he didn’t know when I went into labor. It was his mother that had taken me to the hospital. When I gave birth, I could tell that something was wrong.  I didn’t receive a call from him throughout that day. His mother was so worried  and she fell sick. I just gave birth and I was very weak too but I reported to the polices. It was after two weeks that his wallet was found and brough home, alongside one of his shoes. We concluded he got burnt to ashes. His mother had a stroke when she heard the news and she passed away shortly after.

I didn’t know how but my head was already resting on his chest while he held me close…All the pain of years ago was coming back to me.

. Each year I celebrated my son’s birthday, I tried to put it at the back of my mind but now, it was just more than I could handle. This was the first time I would have someone to share this with…and it meant the everything to me.

As I sobbed my eyes rested on his tab…I AM SO SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS!

I sniffed and while his head rested on my chin…then I tried to shift back.

‘I m so sorry for that.” I said, “Sorry for laying all that on you.” I rubbed the back of my left hand down my cheeks.

He shrugged and gave a weak smile. That was all I needed, until I realized we were still holding hands…

How did that happen…when did we hold hands and…..why were we still holding hands….why did it feel so comforting and so familiar with the way he was stroking the middle of my palm with his thumb…just like…..just like……

As If reading my mind, he yanked his hand away and gave an apologetic look.

Okay, that was awkward…

I began to think of what to do to change the awkward situation but his tab was all up in my face….

“WOULD YOU TEACH ME HOW TO DANCE?”

I smiled as I realized he had beaten me to it.

“Well, I can teach you but how much are you paying for that?” I asked. He was typing again.

I WILL FORGIVE YOUR HUSBAND FOR PUNCHING ME ON THE PLANE.

I laughed and stood up. “Fair enough. Shall we?”

LISA

I watched as the two were dancing from my car. He seemed to be enjoying himself, well they both looked like they were enjoying themselves.

She was teaching him how to dance. I remembered I had asked him if I could teach him in case he would need to dance at the party but he had turned me down. Now he was dancing with her! The lady that must not be trusted! So he could dance with her! I saved his life for Gods sake!

My tommy was turning as I contemplated whether to get out of the care or not. I was so angry …how could he be so reckless? What if the husband sees them? They were so close to the window and the curtains were not drawn!

Now they were holding hands and walking in circles! I have never seen him this happy since we brought him home! He looked so alive and so handsome! I could feel that awful feeling of jealousy right at the bottom of my tommy!

God! I just hated this woman by the minute!

I opened the door angrily and got down from the car. That was when I realized a car was beside mine and not in the garage, in it was Tommy, he was looking at them and he looked very angry!
