Finding Out

I checked the time, it was just some minutes past four and Lisa was supposed to come by six. I grimaced.
This was such a bad idea! I should have listened to Lisa! I shouldn’t have come here! Why did I desperately want to please the child, and not the child alone….
I could hear their noises as they exchanged words. The man’s voice was louder while hers was softer and somehow defensive . I realized she was trying to take it cool and at the same time trying to keep her nerves. Well I respected that.
Even though I tried not to listen to what was going, I couldn’t help but pick some statements….
“So, you actually brought him here, to act as the father of the kid since I wasn’t around right?”
“Tommy, please, it’s not like that.”
“Later you will start saying I don’t make time for him. You know what I had to put on hold to be here and only to come here and find out that you are carrying on without me!”
Then her voice even got lower so I couldn’t hear the rest of what was said.
What was that all about? Does that mean Tommy wasn’t the boy’s father?
I looked at Freddie who seemed unconcerned about the whole thing.
Did he hear what I just heard or was he just too young to understand?
“Don’t worry Vincent. They do that a lot, they will both calm down soon.” The boy said to me, munching a slice of cake while still playing his video game.
Maybe he didn’t hear that….
After the picture was taken, Freddie had taken my hand and dragged me to his room, giving the couple a space

While he played on his video game, I was taking a look at the pictures. It was mostly Freddie and his mother ever since birth . Some were taken at the hospital when he was born with a cute elderly woman who seemed to be in her early sixties. Looking at the woman now, I realized Freddie resembled her slightly.
“That is my dead father’s mother.

I almost jumped when I heard Freddie’s voice, didn’t know when he came behind me. Then he opened to the next album.
“That’s me when I clocked one and that is my mom when she married Tom.”
Okay…well….the boy knows the truth! How nice!
Out of curiosity, I brought out my tab and typed. “So Tommy is not your daddy?”
“No he isn’t. My daddy is dead. Mummy said he died in an accident.”
Wow! I put down my tab as I had no idea of what next to write. Just then Anika came in. She looked exhausted and really sad but she lightened up as she saw her son.
“Freddie darling, daddy is taking you out for a special birthday treat…”
The boy looked excited. “Cool! Can Vincent come?”
I watched as the lady shook her head and the boy’s excitement vanished.
“Come on, Vincent will be here some other time okay…?” She said, now bending towards him but the boy shook his head so I took my tab and quickly typed .
“I will come some other time or you can come visiting….”
With this, his face brightened up and to my surprise, he embraced me.
Anika and I watched him as he scurried out of the room.
“What is it about you?” Anika asked, looking at me curiously, her arms akimbo. “Why does my son like you so much? He has never been like this with anyone.”
I smiled and shrugged to signal that I had no idea too.
“Anyways, since my husband and my son are not here, I guess we can continue the party till your girlfriend comes. I hope you know how to dance?” She asked, teasingly, beckoning to me to follow her.
At first, I was reluctant, what if her husband comes back? Maybe I should just sit and wait for Lisa, but then it would be stupid to resist a beautiful woman like her. Wouldn’t it? hahaha!
