“Doctor, how far about Freddie?”

The doctor put his stethoscope on the table, facing the couple.

“We were unable to get his blood still…”

“What kind of hospital is this? So all over Nigeria  you still couldn’t find the exact blood type for him? oh my God! This country is so useless!”  Tommy raked, not willing to listen to what the doctor was saying.

It was giving me a headache such I covered my ears….

“I am so sorry baby….” He apologised, patting me on the back

“Doctor, what is the next thing to do now?” I tried to ask.

“I have no idea. Only if someone with the blood sample could…”

“Enough of that ! don’t you have some dying patients here that you can get them tested and know if their blood match our childs?”

I looked at Tommy in horror. “Tommy….!”

“Baby, there could be chances okay, we will compensate the family very well.”

I was feeling so uncomfortable with this whole idea. Was it even legal?

Doctor Randy took off his glasses, wiped it and replaced it. He leaned forward and put his hands on the table.

“There is but one patient with that …..” The doctor said  and my heart skipped a beat.

“Good! So we can test him

. ask him for the price. Any price I will pay it.” Tommy said eagerly.

“The problem is, the man is in a coma.”

When I heard that, my heart sank. This was useless.

“That should even make it easier!” Tommy declared. “You get the blood without him knowing.”

“Tommy shut up! What kind of a monster are you! So you want to  kill someone to keep Freddie. No! I will not be part of it!” I snapped at the man. “Please doctor, does the person have someone we can talk to? Can I see the patient himself?”

“I’m afraid, the lady that came with the patient may not be willing to do this but if you can appeal to her…..”

“Tommy, you are not coming with me cos you might ruin everything! Okay doctor, please take me with her. ”

When we got to the room, we could see the silhouette of the lady through t he transparent cotton that divided the room. The room is divided into sections where in by a cotton. You could call the part where we were as the waiting section of the room

I noticed she was sitting close to a bed and holding someones hand. She raised her head as we came in but we couldn’t see her because of the color of the cotton and she couldn’t see us too…but just the movements….

“Lisa. I want you to meet someone.” Doctor Randy started.

My heart was beating slowly as I had no idea what this Lisa might say….

“What does she want?” The lady demanded.  She sounded as if she had cried all day.   

“I need your help please.” I said slowly….”my son is dying.”

“Well congratulations…” She replied turning back to the person lying down.

“Lisa, I think you need to listen to this woman…only Vincent’s blood can help revive her only child.

Ok, wait a minute…Lisa….Vincent…without thinking…I rushed to the cotton and brushed it apart….

“What the hell…..” Lisa started but the rest died in her throat as she saw me.

“Lisa! It’s you!”

She frowned…remaining quiet. “What are you doing here?”

I glanced towards the bed and my heart sank again…..i was already kneeling down beside Vincent….

“oh my God! What happened to him….? Vincenet..Lisa? Doctor?”

The Doctor was confused but he gave up. “He had an accident and now in a coma.”

Lisa looked sober. I knew her , she would never let us take a drop of Vince’s blood so I stood up.

“I am so sorry for him Lisa. Freddie had an accident too and he is undergoing surgery but we need blood and it only matches…….”

I stopped as I understood what I was about to say….no..no it couldn’t be. How could Vincent….but  Fred…how could this happen….they do not look alike! Has Fred come in another flesh!”

I was so confused I just kept quiet. Then I faced the doctor. “Doctor, please, let us go. I don’t want anything to happen to Vincent either…I know I have to pray more……

“I hope he gets better Lisa.” I said sadly and looking at Vincent again…I desperately wanted to talk to him and hold his hand and …I have so many questions but what if he dies during the transfusion….then my questions will remain unanswered.

I turned and was leaving….

The doctor said nothing but followed me instead….my heart  was beating so fast…

“Wait!” Lisa shouted and my heart momentarily stopped .

“You can take his blood. Vincent will not forgive me if he knows that Freddie died when he could have helped.”

I opened my eyes as my heart beat returned to normal…there were tears in both our eyes. I realized as she held my hands…

“I just don’t want him to die Lisa.”

“It’s okay…he won’t die.” She replied and for the first time, we embraced…….
