I have never been so embarrassed in my whole life. The new boy just
called me an ugly fish. The class is still rowdy with laughter. I can
feel my eyes pricking with unshed tears. "i will not cry, i must not
cry" i repeat this mantra in my mind as i try to stop the tears from
falling.
I look to my best friend ese and she looks apologetic. She should be,
because this is her fault . Why did she have to ask him if he likes
me?. Maybe that's why he insulted me. To hide his embarrassment and
transfer the class' attention to me. I can still hear them laughing.
" i am sorry tess, please don't cry" ese whispers. "he is a jerk and i
will deal with him!". She tries to jump on him as he walks away but i
hold her back begging her to let it go with my eyes. I don't want her
to hurt herself trying to fight him.
The new guy turns to look at us with a smirk on his face as ese
struggles to reach him. He looks so smug with his stunning face. Why
are the handsome ones always jerks?. I want to slap the smirk off his
face but i hold myself because i am not a violent person and also
because fighting would disqualify me from the scholarship i have been
striving for. Every year, the school gives out one scholarship to the
best outgoing student and i need that scholarship

. And to get it, i
have to be a model student.
"what is going on here?!" some one says.
"oh no."i turn to see my teacher looking at the three of us. We stand
silent as he looks between the three of us for answers.
"sir, they were going to fight"some one behind us says. I turn to see
its rita. My rival. We are always competing; especially for the 1st
position in class. I know she also wants to apply for the scholarship.
Our teacher looks at me and asks if what she's saying is true. Before
i think of what to say, the new guy speaks before me.
"yes Mr Elvis, its true. This is my first day here and some one is
already trying to attack me. My father would not be happy to hear
this"
"emmanuel, don't worry. I'll deal with this" turning to me he
says"follow me to my office".
Ese tries to intervene but i stop her. I don't want her to get in
trouble because of me. Its obvious Mr Elvis favours emmanuel because
of his father. I wonder who he is.
At Mr Elvis office, he reprimanded me and told me to go back upstairs
and apologize to emmanuel. When i went back to the class, Mrs peace
was already teaching so i postponed my apology.

. Through out the class,
i could feel his eyes on me even during the break period when he was
chatting with rita and her crew, a group of four saucy girls(rita,
favour, faith and Paula). They are beautiful, rich and rude and all
the guys in class wanted to date them. It seems rita likes emmanuel.
Well, i don't plan to compete with her for him. She can have him.
I decided to apologize tomorrow when both of us would have calmed
down. I wonder why he hates me.
"well i don't care"
"you don't care about what sister tess?". Oh i forgot, i was walking
home with olivia.
"nothing my sweet olive..look, an ice cream cart. Do you want one?"
"you know i do!" i look down to see her grinning. She looks so happy
and care free. I hope to keep that great smile on her face forever. I
must succeed so i can take care of my little olive, she deserves the
best and i won't let my mother make her sad. And i won't let anybody
make me lose my focus on that scholarship, not even emmanuel Johnsons.
He seems to be after my misery but i won't let him deter me.
"come on, lets go get ice-cream"
"yay! I love you T" i smile and throw her a kiss as we walk over to
the ice-cream cart.
