The fill-in wife - Episode 16

 

Jordan:

The first time I saw her, in that gown, on the beach looking so breathtakingly beautiful, it was like I was staring into mother's face. True, I'd seen Maya at the mansion the day grandma Catherine fired her but I wasn't really paying attention. Deana like always had me distracted. But right now, It's f*cking glaring how much she looks like mother . I don't know how Maya looks so much like my mother and I have been looking for an opportunity to get her alone to ask her some questions. I'm most definitely wrong about this because mother died while giving birth to me and Maya is obviously not older than me but I just have to be sure. I've had this hunch that my father is hiding something about my mother from me for ages now and seeing this exact replica of mother, I am determined to find out if dad is really hiding something.
All day, I've watched her from a distance while Deana kept her occupied. I finally get my chance to talk to her as she flee out of our room obviously embarrassed by Deana's blatant flirting. I quickly excuse myself from the clearly displeased Deana and follow after Maya. Unfortunately, I don't get away from Deana soon enough and I'm confused on which way she went. I remember her saying she's going to get some water so I head to the bar

. I get there in time to see her take a glass of soda before turning to leave.
I make to go after her but suddenly get grabbed from behind. I turn clearly annoyed eyes to whoever it is but soften my gaze when I meet Derrick's gaze.
"What's with you and my wife?" He asks coldly and I shrug.
"Don't give me that look Jordan. My sister obviously likes you and I won't hesitate to cut you into tiny pieces if you hurt her." He spits and I take this time to study him. He's clutching a bottle of vodka but it's full. He must have seen my eyes in his drink because he smiles sheepishly.
"I haven't taken a sip. I won't." He says as if to assure himself.
"So you won't cut me into pieces for chasing after your wife but for your sister?" I ask and he sighs with a pained expression. He mutters something about not having a right or something under his breath.
"What's up Derrick? Don't think I haven't thought about how weird it is that you got married so quickly after Rose?" He throws me a questioning look and I shrug again.
"Deana told me about Rose" I explain.
"Well it's none of your business." He mutters and let go of my hand. He starts walking away from me.
"It will be my business if you hurt or use her!" I yell after him and I see him stiffen but he doesn't stop walking. Whatever he's up to, I can see how much it's weighing down on him though. I push Derrick to the back of my mind as I continue after Maya who's now nowhere to be found. There's a group of people gathered around two women who most likely are fighting over a guy or something. I go to sidestep the scene when someone moves and my eyes meet the cloudy eyes of Maya. She's fighting?
I watch in awe as a smallish redheaded woman pummel her fist into Maya's stomach then against her chin. Maya doesn't even try to retaliate. Her eyes are just dull orbs of resignation and when they close, I can't take it anymore. I grab the tiny fist of the redhead whose red lipstick is caked in her teeth. Disgusting.
"F*ck off" my voice may sound calm but I'm anything but calm. The tiny woman senses this and she begs to be let go. I just need the word from Maya and I'll crush her without remorse of her being a woman. Maya nods that she's fine but I still want to  hurt this bitch. Security arrives at this time and I wonder where the heck they have been! I reluctantly let go of this vile thing only for her to start ranting about Maya sleeping with me and being abandoned by her mother. This information stun me and I ponder if my mother could be so cold hearted to leave her child. I see Maya run out and I quickly follow after her. She doesn't stop until she reach the beach. I watch her fall to her knees as she sob into the darkness. My heart breaks for this woman and I find myself kneeling behind her and wrapping my arms around her from behind. She freezes in my arm but I just pat her hair soothingly.
"It's going to be okay. I swear it." I say.

Maya:

The arms around me feels warm and safe but it's not Derrick. The sparks are not the same.
"It's going to be okay. I swear it." When he whisper those words, there is so much conviction in his voice but I don't know if I can believe those words. Derrick did say something similar but where is he now? It is like there's this thing people see in me that makes them run for the hills. Derrick didn't see it at first but he does now. That's why he has been avoiding me. He probably regrets marrying me. This thought brings on another wracks of sobs and I cry hard while Deana's fiance hold me. Just when I thought my Prince charming has come to sweep me off my feet and away from my torturous life. Turns out my bad luck is far more potent than I thought.

Derrick:

"What are you doing out here, it's late." I look up to see Deana looking at me weirdly. I just shrug and clutch the bottle of vodka I can't bring myself to drink because I don't want Maya spending the night taking care of a drunk.
Deana sit herself down on the sand beside me and snatch the bottle from my hand.
"What are you doing?!" I yell as she chug the drink straight from the bottle. I have to pry the thing out of her hand before she lets go.
"What's your problem?! Do you want to kill yourself!" I yell at her but she just giggles.
"I think I'm in love, brother." She says seriously after she gets her laughing in check. I stare at her open mouthed.
"Jordan?" I ask and she nod.
"So about Maya, I find it strange. This marriage, I mean. Please don't tell me this is about Grandma Catherine giving the company to the first son that gets married." She must have seen the guilt on my face because her eyes go huge.
"Oh my God, Derrick! Does she know? This is insane! So do you just throw her away once the company's yours?!" Her rambling gets on my nerves.
"Look at me Deana! Can't you see I'm f*cking torn?! I'm right here staring into the ocean with a bottle of vodka I don't want to drink because I don't want to give her more reason to hate me later! Stop with the torture already!" I yell. Deana's watchful eyes study me for few seconds.
"You love her." She states like it's so obvious. I hang my head in resignation.
"Grandma Catherine isn't stupid Derrick.

. A child is also a condition to get the company. Not just getting married." Deana drop the bomb suddenly and my head spin. Double f*ck!
We both stare at each other for what feels like hours. Deana's eyes are full of pity for the situation I've put myself.
A figure race pass us and both our eyes settle on the figure who falls to her knees on the beach's sand. It's obviously a woman. Another figure watch her for a while before kneeling behind her and wrapping his arms around her. I remove my eyes from what is obviously an intimate moment between two lovers. Deana still seem focused on them though.
"Jordan." She whispers.
"What?"
"That's Jordan right there on the beach." She cries out.
"Come on, don't conclude anything." I try to persuade her but she throws me a hard look.
"Can't you see?! That's Maya he's holding! He's been following her all day!" She spit and that's when it sinks in. My eyes go back to the figures on the beach and it's glaring now. It really is the two of them.
"That bastard." Deana cries as she run off towards the hotel. I throw one last look at the two of them which only intensifies the ache in my chest before I run after Deana.
