Set me free - Episode 4
Michelle:
"I'll hold your ticket for you okay?" the man I should be calling father say softly to me. I'm tempted to point out that I'm blind and not deaf but refrain.
"I can hold my own ticket, Max." I say testily instead as I stretch my hand forward to collect the ticket. I still can't call him father
. It would feel like betrayal to mother's memory.
"Listen Michelle, I know you and Michele have been through a lot but--"
'You have no idea what my mom has been through so I beg you not to say her name. You don't deserve that." I grind out. I don't deserve it either. Tears burn the back of my eyes but I don't let them fall. I've cried too much for someone who killed her mother. No more tears for me. I don't deserve that as well.
There's a brief silence before Max speaks again.
"I'm sorry about your mother, Michelle." There's much torment in his voice but I don't let that get to me. He's the enemy. He was the one mother was running away from when she met her end. He was the one I was defending when mother met her end. I killed my mother and he was the weapon of destruction.
"But baby, you have to give me a chance. I want to make up for lost times

"you are eighteen years late Max."
"I know. If you don't want my comfort then at least let me take care of you. Let me give you the life you deserve." he laments and I shake my head.
"I don't want that life you want to give me anymore. Mom just died and you are shipping me off to the States! I want to remain here. With mother! I can't betray her again. I just can't." I can't hold the tears anymore.
"would your mother want that? For you to rot in this country? Listen baby. You don't have to accept me okay? Just let me take you away from here and get you medical help in the States. So you can reach the goals she wanted for you." my sob interrupts him for a second before he continues.
"This was the dying wish of your mother. The nurses said she kept asking that you should be taken from this life right until she died."
My heart ache as I listen to this. Even till she died, she worried for me.
"The plane would be leaving in about ten minutes. I'll give you space to think about it. If after these few minutes, you still want to stay in this country, here's your ticket. tear it up and I'll take you back. But Michelle, think not just about your grief but of your mother's wish as well." Max say as he pushes my ticket into my palm and I feel him stand up.
"I'll just get you some water." he explains as his footsteps sound farther away from me.

. I grab unto the flimsy tickets as I cry harder than ever before. Memories of mother coming home from the diner late while I rant about her not having time for me invade my mind. Mother never had time for me but it was always to put food on my table.
"I'll give you a better life far from here. No one would look down on you then my beautiful child." she'll always say. Max is right. That was her only wish. That I'll be free of the slums. I can't be selfish about this as well.
"decided already?" Max's sudden voice startle me a little. Disadvantages of being blind.
"Let's get on that plane." I say simply as I stretch my ticket out for him to hold on to for me.
"Thanks for doing this Michelle." I feel like a knife has been slashed across my heart at his mention of Michelle. I've always thought having the same name as my mother was sweet but not now when it only makes me loathe myself more
"Mara." I say my middle name out.
"what? " Max asks, clearly confused.
"my name is Mara from now on." I say as explanation and stand up to let him lead me towards the gateway. Max take my hand gently without any questions.
"Mara." he repeats as we walk side by side.
I'm going to leave for you mother but I'll never forget that I don't deserve happiness.
