Obiageli - Introduction
A Woman's Cry
Oluchi sat outside the house on a stool..brooding, the weather was changing and things were happening around her but she paid no mind, her eyes were fixed to a spot, her mind far away.
She thought about when she first came to the house, three years ago, she had been with her husband for three years and..her name was being called in the background, she didn't respond as her husband's voice finally got to her with coughs following, she came back from the reverie as she stood up from the stool and stretched having sat there for so long.
"Who's to cook my meal?" Okafor asked, he sat on a wooden bench in front of his hut, wearing his usual singlet and wrapper around his waist with an old bathroom slippers on his feet, on his hair were dots of grey, his teeth was blackened by too much tobacco, he held his usual snuffbox. He was as goodlooking as he was when he married her but he looked slimmer now
"When you are done staring at me you can go fix me something to eat, do you want the day to begin it's sleep before I have my meal?"
She began wiping her eyes with the end of her wrapper but he chose to ignore it as he had gotten used to it
"My lord, it is not my turn to bring you your meal"
"Who is?"
"Adaeze my lord"
"You now compare my wife's food to my daughter's"
She looked down,why wouldn't he just leave her alone to brood
"Her mother is to cook but she helps her"she said
" eheh, is that so..I want you to cook my meal"
"But my lord.."
"Since you don't have anything to do other than sit down outside and think"
She turned away as tears spilled
"As if you are the only woman"
"Why me..chukwu why, made me a laughing stock amongst women..chei"
"My evening meal woman" he said, she sniffed again and cleaning her eyes went inside, okafor continued snuffing as he talked to himself
"Women..all they do is cry, if crying could solve anything then all the men would join our tears with theirs" he sniffed in hard"Emenike made this so strong, this is what I like"he stared at the container trying to read the letters " ..and he went and labeled it"he laughed slapping his thighs "booku" then he called out again
" Oluchi am waiting o, why should a man starve in his own house...kia"he put more snuff in his nose"I'm even the one supposed to be crying, three years and no issue from this woman..not even a miscarriage "he whizzed.
