Oluchi
Oluchi cried to the stream and back,as she dropped the pot since no one came to help her she didn't expect Ezinma who was plaiting her daughters hair to do such a thing. Ezinma had not been kind to her ever since she came into the house because she hadn't expected her husband to marry another wife after she had given him a male child, another woman to compete with her, especially as she noticed her husband loved Oluchi of all of them even when Oluchi had refused to have an issue.
"Eh Oluchi, give me some water, I need to bathe my daughter" she said
Oluchi looked surprised but said"I'm sorry but I have many things to do with this water"
"Many things, ah, like what, its only you now, if you had children now I would understand ...or even a baby"
Oluchi stared long a her with no reply as Ezinma seeing her expression continued undeterred"sorry oh..for asking at all, you should not be selfish with water, its a child I want to use it for"
Oluchi finally found her voice "I know..but i want to make use of it, Nnenna is also my child, and if I had enough I wouldn't hesitate.."
Ezinma clapped at her"Abeg she is not your child, because of water you want to claim my child, drink your water alone witch"she cut her daughters hair and continued plaiting it as Oluchi stared at her.
Oluchi went to her hut and began crying, she clutched her pillow asking the gods what she had done wrong, she had gone from native doctor to chief priest to no avail, she had done enough sacrifices and all they say is for her to wait but for how long, how long would her husband be patient with her,how long would she suffer the humiliation, from fellow wives, market women and the village, the all believed Okafor married her for children yet not even a single issue. As she heard women getting pregnant here and there she wondered if she too was not a woman, she went about her duties as a wife but ..was she never destined to become a mother, how could she survive this, was it possible she was barren..
"Oluchi nwam"Okafor paused at the door" oh god when would you stop this crying "he asked when he saw her sobbing, he went inside and sat on her bed
" I'm barren"she said,he took her in his arms"no you're not, dont mind Ezinma eh, your crying is ruining your beautful face"he said cleaning her tears"
"I'm so unfortunate amongst women, what have I done wrong?"
"Nothing my dear..the gods know best" he consoled laying down with her in his arms.
As she slepr with her husband that night she wondered why she couldnt get pregnant, why she couldnt just be like other women of her age, she cried for long after Okafor left her.
