Obiageli - Episode 26

Obiageli woke up suddenly....having a feeling of foreboding, she got out of her bed slowly as she looked around, three lizards were fighting, then scuttled into a hole.

She came out of her mother's hut as the winds increased, slapping her face, her eyes went over each hut, wondering what was happening...she looked back at her mothers hut again then stepped out of the compound as two birds flew above her, one of the birds hit a tree and fell to the ground, dead....She ran back into the compound, looking for a source of water, she opened their drum and looked in...

She saw Uche.

She arrived at the forest in no time but Uche was already on the floor, writhing in pain, her heart thudded  as she breathed fast, she fell beside him

"Obimo" she called, he was still wretching as his eyes dimed, she looked and saw the snake gliding majestically away, her tears were already falling, it was a large black python. She knew it was them, She knew who it was, they had come to harm her lover just like they had said....She stood up and looked for a stick, she didn't like killing animals but it was the end of this one as she raised the stick to kill it but it turned and charged at her, she stepped back dropping the stick, discovering it was no ordinary snake as it glided slowly towards her.

Falling to her knees she faced it , bending her face to the ground, her eyes focused on it as it came closer....she took in a breath and blew at it....it hissed and twirled away twisting on itself severally before it went still.

She went back to Uche, the poison had obviously spread because he could barely breath now

"My love...I'm so sorry" her tears flowed freely as she laid her head on his chest...It was all her fault, if he died, she would blame herself, she had made him sleep with her damning the gods and her curse, she thought they wouldn't be able to harm him because nothing had happened till now, she had even decided to let him go, why did they still attack him?

"Why?" She cried, "I love him"she said, she knew it was because he had taken her virginity that was why Napsi was mad...she took up his hand to touch her wet face

"Oby" he barely whispered, then his hand fell...

"No..No..." She shook him as she cried, she took him up and hugged him"no Uche you can't die, don't leave me please"but he remained still...his life was ebbing away she could see, she had to do something....even though it mearnt losing her life....

"Agunwan.." She heard and looked up

"Agunwan" it came again, she dropped him and looked around, who was saying that, her eyes went to every part of the forest but there was nobody around, just bushes and trees..and them.

"Agunwan" she heard for the third time and everything went quiet.

Her eyes went back to Uche lying still on the floor, if only they had listened and stayed away from each other, if only they had never fallen in love, if only she had never come, he would still be alive.. she held his hand, it was getting cold, she looked at the bite wound on his leg, it was swollen.

She stood up and went to pluck tree branches, she brought two large ones to the body and put them on both sides of him, bending to the wound, she placed her mouth on it and began to suck, tears fell from her eyes as she continued even when she felt weak and faintly, she finished the whole poison...then fell beside him.

Three hours later, Uche opened his eyes....light rushed in, he stared up at the trees, puzzled, trying to recall what had happened and where he was, he sat up and looked sideways....saw somebody...he shifted back in shock, it was a girl, looking at her again, he discovered it was Obiageli, what was she...

He knelt beside her "Oby, Oby"he shook her but she was dead white, he shook her more

" Oby no.."he took her up and hugged her as he saw the snake which was now dead and everything came rushing back, how he had been in the forest thinking and had been struck twice by the snake before he turned, how he had laid in pain as his life flashed before him, how he knew he was going to die as he remembered what his brother had said,  they had finally come to take him because of what he had done, he wondered why they took this long....

"Is that all you can do?" he shouted to the trees...he had seen her enter the forest calling his name....now she was cold, very cold, he knew then what she had done.

He closed her staring eyes..."OBIAGELI..." he shouted to the sky

*Is Oby dead?
