In my dreams - Episode 4

 

"You must be crazy, I've heard of no such thing "
"But sis its real, I always see him in my dreams "
She looked at me skeptically
"Are you saying you are psychic? "
"No, I don't even know what that is"
"It means you see things before they happen "
"No I don't see things before they happen, I just always see him..  in my dreams...  that's all"
Tina sat down on the cushion slowly
"is he like your spirit husband? ". 
I looked at her"what's that? "
"Like a man that comes to sleep with you in your dreams"
"What no" I crossed my arms
"So what do you guys do in the dream? "she asked
 I looked at her as I began recalling and hearing voices, there were shouts and wails, I blinked and came back to reality 
"You just blanked out" she said eyes wide
"I did? "
"Yes you did, for like five minutes you were off. . . "she paused" what did you see? "
I shook my head "I saw nothing, just voices"
"Well,  what did you hear? ". 
They had been indistinct, shaking my head I stood up"I ll figure it out on my own"
As I reached the door she said"maybe we should call Mom"
I turned ". No don't, not yet, she has too much on her plate.

Relunctantly she nodded. 
"Take care of yourself sis" I said and went out. 
I got to my room and laid on my bed thinking about Christian, my cell rang,  it was David
"Hey babe wassup,  what you doing?" He asked
"Nothing, just thinking?"
"About?" he asked 
"Nothing, its nothing to worry about "
He was silent "I wanted to come pick you up, you think you could come over, we could continue where we left off" he insinuated, I paused,  I was supposed to be excited....  but I just got scared instead
"I'm not really up for it tonight"I said
"You sure you ok?" He asked worried 
"I ll be fine, went to see my sis, she's ill and all,  guess it rubbed off on me, I just need a little rest"
"Ok, call me tomorrow "
"I will"
"I love you"
I paused "Good night David ".

Nneka looked up from breaking palm kernels, the sun was setting, she looked back at the palm kernels and continued the hit between stones, her son Kelechi ran in hot pursuit of a lizard
"Kelechi" she called 
"Mama" he replied, he was just four years old but he could understand the native dialect very well
"Get inside at once" she barked, he frowned but turned and went back inside, her husband was yet to return from the farm and she wondered why, she had not married Ejike out of love, having been given to him by her father as it was custom in those days, but he was a good man and had given her a son in the four years they have been married, she looked up at the next compound as Okonta returned home, welcomed in by his wife Chinyere, he was a hunter and she wondered what was keeping her own husband who was a farmer this late, taking up her basket of palmkernels, she walked back into her hut.  
As she prepared the bed for the night, her husband walked in
"What took you so long?" she asked
"I met Ikenga on the way, we had matters to discuss" he replied
"You should think of your safety"
"My safety is in the hands of the gods" he said, 
She set dinner for him as she gave Kelechi his bath, after she put him to sleep, she sat on the bed with him as he was still eating
"Do you know the king plans to sell off most of our lands to a certain man named Basil "
"Why?,what does the man need the lands for?" she asked surprised
Her husband paused "They found oil" he said
She frowned "He has no right to do that, our lands belong to our forefathers and fathers before them "
"Well he's bent on doing that, says he's trying to avert a war briming"
"We are not afraid of war, we would die fighting for our lands, what are we without them "
"Shhh, the walls have ears, most of the villagers  do not want war, it is not a pleasant thing to wish for"
"Well what do you think my dear husband, sit and watch our lands being taken?"
"Let's just pray he gets bored and walks away to bug someplace else"
They slept that night but Nneka could not get the thought off her head. 

The next morning... 
"Nneka Daalu"Chinyere greeted from across the compound, she was heavily pregnant and due anytime soon, Nneka waved back then she continued her sweeping,  Chinyere's  husband,  Okonta walked out and they talked for a while before he walked out of the compound
"Are you going to the stream today? "Chinyere asked
Nneka looked up "eh, maybe later, I still have some kernels to break"she replied, Chinyere nodded and went inside her hut.

"We can't allow such a thing to happen "Ikenga said drinking from his wooden cup of palmwine, it was late evening and  they all sat on a bench outside Ejike's house
"I fear it has already happened, he is right now signing the agreement" Ejike said "I hear he was promised gold"
"I fear a war briming"Okonta said digging his famous stick into the ground 
There was silence, Nneka brought more kolanuts as she pretended not to listen to the conversation on ground , she knew her place was to ask her husband later, she jesticulated and greeted the men
"Nneanyi daalu"
"Nne, you are looking fresh everyday, is it that Ejike is taking care of you or you are expecting again"Ikenga shot out
She blushed crimson
"Taa Ikenga, you can't be cracking such jokes, the one I have already is a handful"Ejike retorted, Kelechi turned to look at them from the sand he was playing with, his whole body was covered with sand
"Well you never can tell with women, touch them and they get pregnant "Ikenga continued
Nneka thought it was her cue to leave, she met the gaze of Okonta, who sipped his palmwine uninterested, she knew he was more worried about the supposed war coming, she went inside as she heard him say
"I smell it already, it is here". 

Jasmine opened her eyes.

It was morning.
