Andy coughed blood into the handkerchief in his hand and was about to say something else when he saw his father was on the floor, he was having another heart attack.

Adams rushed to him quickly. “Oh  my God! Andy what have you done?”

All the anger disappeared from Andy’s face and he rushed to his father. “Dad, I swear if you die on me, I will never forgive you!”

“Come on, let’s take him to the hospital.” Adam suggested and they carried him out of the room.

Ruthie climbed out of the cab with her travelling bag in her hand . This was the address that had been sent to her and she hoped that the driver hadn’t made any mistake. It was pretty late in the night and everywhere was dark except for the street lights. She began to walk towards the house. As she got to the front door, she knocked twice but no one answered. Then she left her bag by the door and walked towards the first window which  she could see was by the other side.

The room was dark but she could hear someone grunting and another moaning...crap! No one had to tell her that someone was having sex in there. Still she needed to ask.

“Hello, please, I am so sorry to bother you, but is this number 3, Crescent road?”

For a few seconds, the noises stopped and then a voice said, “cross to the other side...”

“Okay thank you, sorry I disturbed. Please carry on.”

While she returned to the door to pick her bag, someone shouted from behind her.

“Ruthie!”

Quickly, she turned around and found Tracy, she was relieved

. They hugged and then pulled away.

“What are you doing here?” Tracy asked as they walked back to the road.

“I made a mistake, I thought it was your house.”

Tracy smiled, “no, it’s the other side, I forgot to tell you to cross over, thank God you are here at last. I have been so worried.”

Some minutes later, Tracy, Ruthie and Reeva were all in the living room taking tea, KEMI was no longer with them, it was the three of them.

“So, you left the mansion, what a surprise.” Tracy broke the silence.

“Yes I had to.” Ruthie replied and continued, “I did what you advised me to do, I punished him.”

Tracy laughed. “So you punished him accidentally?”

“Yes I did.” Ruthie replied proudly. Reeva was only looking at the two of them, not understanding what was happening.

“What are you two talking about?” Reeva asked.

“Oh, you remember the thing I told you about Michael having feelings for her?”Tracy asked and Reeva nodded. “Well, after what he did on your engagement night, wanting to kiss her and then lied that he only wanted to pick something, I told her to punish him accidentally. So tell me, what exactly did you do Ruthie?”

Ruthie chuckled sadly and leaned back, holding the cup in her hands. “While pouring his tea, I made sure that it poured on his hands, I stepped on him, I turned on the hot shower instead of the cold, I put a thorn in his shoe....you should have seen the way he jumped.”

The three women laughed.

“Oh my God! That was so cruel and interesting.” Reeva remarked.

“And deserving.” Ruthie pitched in. “I enjoyed every minute of it.”

As they were talking, Ruthie remembered something. So she reached for the purse on the table, brought out her phone which was off and then pressed a button. The phone came to life and started booting. In a few seconds several messages started coming they were voicemail messages. She shrugged and put it off again.

“You didn’t check them?” Reeva asked.

“I don’t need to. There are only few people that will be looking for me right now. Adams, Michael and Andy, that is if Michael finally had the gut to tell him.”

“Really? You think he might not tell him?” Reeva asked.

“Oh yea. He wouldn’t want what happened the last time to happen again.” Ruthie replied.

“What happened? Have you left their house before?” Tracy asked.

“Not me, his real mother.”Ruthie replied.

“Wow.” Both mother and daughter said at the same time.

“What happened exactly Ruthie?” Reeva asked.

“Well, I and Fiona never really got along, even though she was the one who actually hired me, I think she hired me because she knew that she was going to leave soon.”

“Really? Why do you think so?” Reeva asked again.

“Well, she was always telling me that she wouldn’t be home all the time, that I needed Andy to get used to me. Even when he was crying as a baby, I would always attend to him, she wasn’t much of a mother, she was barely around. The truth was, herself and her husband were barely around. Michael was busy making money, travelling up and down the country, she would always travel immediately after he has gone. I started suspecting. There was a time I asked if she would love to take Andy on her trip. I think that was when Michael started suspecting her.

We were all sitting at a table, I had just finished serving them, Andy was in his seat beside his father, think he was just three or four then, she was busy pressing her phone. So I just asked when she would be travelling next and if she would like to take him along. You should have seen the look on her face. Michael looked at her and asked what was going on and what trip I was talking about.”

“So what did she say to cover that up?” Tracy asked.

“She laughed and stood up to kiss her husband, saying I didn’t know what I was saying and that maybe I meant anytime she would be traveling instead. That I didn’t suggest that she was always travelling. Then he asked, if that was it and I said yes.” Ruthie continued, “That night, Michael came to meet me while she was taking a shower, he wanted to know if I had spoken the truth or not.”

“So what did you say?” The two ladies asked and Ruthie sighed.

“Well, between the two of them, Michael had always been the nicer one. He was such a good man and I used to pity him for everything that bitch did to him. So I told him the truth. That night, I heard them, fighting and I later saw Michael drive out in the middle of the night. Before that time, he had already made her his power of attorney. The other morning, he sent me to his lawyer who hadn’t been picking his call, then I found out that the lawyer had an accident. I think he wanted to change his power of attorney since he sensed that his wife couldn’t be trusted anymore. The following day, Fiona was nowhere to be found. All her things were gone and she left a note that no one should look for her. It was a terrible time, Andy as young as he was couldn’t understand what was happening. Even though he was more used to me, he knew his mother and he loved her. When he stopped seeing her around for a while, he started misbehaving in school. His teachers kept reporting him and he just became so aloof. He stopped being the happy kid that I knew him to be.

It was really a trying time for I and his father. Michael was devastated, his money was gone and he started sending away most of his helps, it later  remained myself and I only stayed because of Andy. If had left, the poor boy would really be worse. At a time, his teacher marked him as being dangerous among his friends. One of them had mistakenly hit him with a ball and Andy got so angry, he bite him with his teeth.”

“What!” Reeva exclaimed.

“Yea, so he changed school. Mr. Jackson took him to Maggie’s school. They were good friends.  He took care of his school fees and everything else while his father worked on his finances. Andy started spending more time with Maggie, since they were basically age mate and were in the same class. So you can understand why they got close and how they can be inseparable. She was his only friend for a while, until they went to college and Maggie started acting out; By then, Andy was seventeen and he was becoming a cute boy, his father was back on his feet so, he started taking responsibilities again. I don’t know why Maggie started misbehaving at first but later I realized she was beginning to like Andy and other girls were getting his attention so she became mean and started acting like a spoilt child.”

“But they dated, right Ruthie?” Reeva asked.

“Yes, they dated but it didn’t last. Andy only dated her because she asked him out and because they used to be very close until they grew up, he said yes because he wanted to make her happy, not because he was interested. That was why the relationship never lasted.”

“Wow!”

“Yea and shortly after they broke up, she got to a law school while he was still confused about what to do with his life until two years later when he decided to study law as well.”

“And that was when I decided to study law too.” Reeva said to herself.

“But what happened Ruthie?, why did you leave Michael and why are you here?” Tracy asked.

“Well, I am here to make amends just like I have said, I just explained something that Andy should have told Reeva but is finding it difficult to.

You see, because of what happened, Michael taught Andy just one thing and that is to never trust a woman.”

“But, that was so unfair...he has his own life to live and his own mistakes to make. He has his own lessons to learn.” Reeva complained.

“Yes, that was my point too but he thought he was doing the right thing for him. He thought he was trying to protect him, he never knew the damage he

was causing him and himself. I tried to point out to both of them very much but each time always made me realize that I wasn’t t his mother, he was the father and I am just the help so I have a limit.”

“It affected Michael as well right?” Tracy asked.

“Yes, more than he will ever realize. It turned him into this cold heartless man who is afraid of relating with his emotions. He is afraid, too afraid of love. Even when something good is happening right in front of him, he toys with it than to take it serious.” Ruthie said sadly.

“You mean like he toyed with your heart?” Tracy asked.

“Of course, he did and it really hurt me. IF Andy continues like that, he is going to end up a miserable man, afraid to love and be loved.”

“But he loves me; I just don’t know why he doesn’t trust me.” Reeva cried.

“He doesn’t trust you enough to get married to you that was the whole thing he learned when growing up. As young as Andy was when his mother left, he knew what his father went through. He sometimes talks about it. He couldn’t understand why then, why Maggie’s father was always showing up when it comes to his school stuff, he would always represent his daughter and Andy. There was a time when he once asked me if his father had also left him since Maggie’s father and I had come to his end of the year party and he had stood up as his father.

. I told him that daddy needed to be away and that Mr. Jackson is like a father to him as well.

Andy is afraid as well. He has lived his life hoping that what happened to his father would not happen to him. Michael believes that spending more years with a woman will make you see if she is trustworthy or not but he has gotten it wrong. I have spent more than twenty years with him and he still cannot come to terms with how he really feels. He is such a broken man incapable of love or trust and the reason why I am here is because, I don’t want you to blame Andy, he is just being a good son. He thought that his father knows best but his father is broken too.”

“Hmmm.” Reeva sighed, “I was confused, I started feeling as if I am getting married to the man instead of the son. I was so sure that even if we start living together, the man will be calling the shots and not even Andy. How much until he starts deciding how many children we are having or how often we need to sleep together and the duration. It is just really sick!”

“Yes it is my dear. It is.”

“Thank you so much Ruthie, you just put my mind at rest, I understand what Andy is afraid of and I really do hope that they find someone who will help them see the light.” Reeva said.

“Yea, I do hope that too.” Ruthie replied but Tracy was only quiet, looking at the two, she knew these were the two ladies that both men needed in their lives, she only hoped that it wouldn’t be too late before they would both realize.

WELL, TWO POOR LADIES IN THE SAME BOAT.
