“Do you think this gown will look good on me?”

Skybae shook her head without looking at what Reeva was showing her. Instead, she was deeply engrossed in the phone she was holding.

“Come on, you didn’t even look at it.”

“I’d rather not Reeva. That would be the fiftieth picture you would be showing me in the last ten minutes and I am really tired of it.” Skybae said with a scoff.

Reeva shrugged and got up from the bed they were both lying in . She was holding a fashion magazine and all the bridal wears she had been seeing were all just so beautiful, she couldn’t help but imagine herself in one of them.

“You are such a fun killer. This is why I love Pristin, she will never get tired of me.” Reeva said, standing up.

“Then you should wait for her.” Skybae continued. “She should be done with her class by now.”

“What is wrong with you ? Why are you so mean this morning?” Reeva asked, now fully up and walking to the mirror.

“I don’t know. Try listening to yourself for the past one hour and....” The door opened, interrupting her.  She hissed a sigh of relief. “Here she comes.”

Their third friend came in, slim body, dark and way taller than the rest of them.

“Thank God, Pristin! What took you so long?” Reeva asked, as Pristin came in, dropping her bag on the bed.

“Don’t even bother to ask

. I have agreat news.” Pristin said, jumping on the bed beside Skybae who didn’t look interested in whatever he had to say. Reeva, however, was much interested and they were both sitting on the bed.

“What is it?”

“There is a rumor that Tony is going to ask you to marry him soon.”

Reeva gasped. “I know, right? I have been telling Skybae that for how many hours now...?”

“Like 50 hours ago,” Skybae replied, rolling her eyes but Reeva ignored her and instead continued addressing Pristin.

“I guess everyone saw what is in the magazine. It’s amazing how a little statement can just spiral into one big expectation.”

Pristin dipped a hand into her bag and brought out a magazine, flipping to a page in which she showed Reeva.

Reeva read the lines of the magazine aloud. “Philly Anderson, wife of the Assistant President of the Bar Association attends the royal wedding last night, talks about how she cannot for the marriage of her son.” After this, Reeva frowned and faced her friend. “Do you really think he would propose to me soon?”

“That is the most stupid thing I have ever heard in my life,” Skybae shouted, startling the both of them.

“No one asked you, .” Pristin glared at her.

“You have just been in a relationship for seven months, why would you think that?” Skybae asked again but no one gave her a reply. Finally, she stood up.”Seems, I am the only one with common sense here.”

Reeva sighed. She was getting tired of Skybae’s negative remarks.

“Skybae, you know I love you but this means a lot to me right now and If you cannot be supportive, can you just keep quiet?”

Skybae sighed and nodded. “I am sorry. I am happy for you but...” She continued. “do you really think that Tony would want to marry right now?”

“Why not?” Reeva asked. “He will soon be done with law school and once he joins his parents at the bar, the money will start coming in.” She finished with a grin.

“Well, let’s  just hope it happens like that but what If he doesn’t think the way everyone, including his mother, is thinking?” Pristin finally asked.

“Then, I will have to make him think that way,” Reeva replied.

“How?” Her two friends asked at the same time.

Reeva smiled and took her phone from the table. She dialed a number and waited for the phone to ring before she switched to the loudspeaker.

“Hello, baby.” A relaxed male voice said from the other end.

“Hey, darling. Where are you?” Reeva asked while her friends kept watching whatever drama she was acting.

“I’m just leaving the class, what’s up?”

“Do you mind picking me up this evening?”

The receiver hesitated. “Why? Is everything okay?”

“Nothing. I just thought we need to go somewhere together.”

“Baby, is this place have a name?”

“It will ruin the surprise if I tell you. Don’t worry, I will send you the direction.” Reeva replied.

After a few seconds of silence. “Okay, I will see you later.”

“I love you,” Reeva said hurriedly but the call ended sharply.

Okay, that was so unlike Tony but, it shouldn’t be a problem. Once he puts a ring on it, she would have his complete attention.

“What are you doing Reeva?” Pristin demanded.

“There are some guys who need some pushing to do the right thing while some just need to be left on their own to figure things out.”

Both friends exchanged glances.

“So, which one is he?” Skybae asked.

“Oh, he’s both. He needs a pushing to do the right thing. Tonight, I am taking him to my mother, she will do the pushing for me.” Reeva said with a smile. “I will be right back.” She walked out of the room, excitedly.

For a while, neither of the two spoke.

“This is such a bad idea,” Pristin said, breaking the silence. She had always supported Reeva, no matter what she did.

“Well, you have been the one supporting her and encouraging her all this while. “ Skybae replied. She was the only one of the three who would never be too coward to say the rightful things. So many times, she would actually question herself about how she had ended up having those two as her closest friends. They all attended the same school, except for Tony who was at law school.

“She is our friend and we need to be happy for her.” Pristin retorted.

“Sometimes, telling her the truth would actually work better than just encouraging her to the right thing.” Skybae snapped back, standing up from the bed.

“She has always dreamt of getting married, you know that,” Pristin replied, now cooling down.

“She is obsessed with wedding paparazzi, those two are totally different. What if he doesn’t ask her to marry him? We both know he would not.”

“We can’t say that,” Pristin replied. “He might have changed.”

“Changed?” Skybae asked, wide-eyed. “Are you nuts? People don’t just change. We both saw him, making out with that girl and we both know that, with such a girl, our friend doesn’t stand a chance, I mean, they are both in the law school while Reeva is here, without any idea of what to do with her life.”

“Well, she loves fashion, she can be a fashion designer,” Pristin suggested but Skybae stared at her.

“She could be a fashion designer, or a teacher, or a make-up artist...” Those are all the things she has always wanted to be without settling for a specific one. Next month, we will be done with college and she still has no idea what she would do with her life. Tell me, do you really think Tony's parents would let him settle with her?”

Pristin sighed and was quiet. Skybae was always right and this was why most of the times they never got along. She remembered the day they had gone shopping. Reeva wasn’t around, it was just the two of us. They had passed in front of a car which they recognized to be Tony’s and they had tried checking to see if he was in the car, he was quite alright, except that he was naked to his waist as he laid on top another lady at the back seat of his car and they were so deep into it that they never knew that they had audience.

That day, they had promised not to tell their friend, she would be devastated.

“So what do we do Skybae?” She asked again.

“We do nothing. We support her as you said and when he breaks her heart, we pacify and encourage her. That’s what friends do.”

*************     ***********

“Hi, darling,” Reeva said, leaning in to kiss Tony fully on the lips. Somehow, he pulled away before she actually got to enjoy the kiss.

“What’s up, why call me all of a sudden?” Tony asked, leaning against his car and looking around.  He was as dashing as always. A killer body and those short brown curls always made all the ladies stare.

“Do I need a letter before I call my man?” She asked.

“I’m sorry but you just can’t always expect me to drop everything to satisfy you. You also need to consider that I might be quite busy.”

Reeva nodded. “Okay, I’m sorry.” She tried not to get offended. He was right. “Why don’t you come in?”

Tony hesitated. “Come in to where?” He asked.

“Don’t you trust me?”

“Well, I do but I just can’t enter a place I never know.”

“Well, I want you to meet my mother.” She said. She could see the surprised looked on his face. It was like he had seen a ghost.

“What? Your mum? Why would you want me to meet your mum right now?” He demanded. “I can’t believe you tricked me into doing something I would have loved to take my time into doing? How can you be so manipulative! Didn’t we discuss this? I can’t believe you right now?”

Reeva sighed. “Look, better now than later. Even if you don’t want me to meet your parents, well I want you to meet mine. Maybe that will make you realize how serious I am about us.”

He looked surprised. “So you think I am not serious about us? Is that it? Is that why you had to hijack me like that?”

“I am sorry but it’s been seven months and one of us had to do something and....”

Just then the door opened.

“Hey Reeva, do you mind checking...” An older woman said, interrupting them before seeing the man that Reeva was talking to. “Oh, you must be Tony. I have been waiting for you, do come in.”

** **

Tony kept starring at the woman just as she kept staring at him. Reeva handed him a cup of coffee some minutes ago but he was sure it must have grown cold.

“So, you look as stunning as my daughter had described.”Mrs. Jones said, with a smile.

He forced himself to return the same smile, wiping the moisture off his forehead.

“Thank you, Mrs. Jones.” He replied.

“Oh, please, call me Tracy. Dear, try to get a hold of yourself you are sweating like a Christmas chicken.”

Tony sighed as he felt Reeva’s hand on his lap. He felt no relief.

“I’m sorry Mrs. Jones...er, I mean Tracy. I ur...i am usually not like this. The truth is, your daughter hijacked me here, I never knew I was coming to meet you at all. Else, I would have come with some flowers and some wine.”

Mrs. Jones smiled. “You are such a fine gentleman and I apologize for my daughter’s enthusiasm, I guess she loves you too much and couldn’t wait for her mother to see how lucky she is.”

“I’m sorry baby. My mother just said everything.” Reeva said, kissing him on the cheek.

“So what are your plans after law school?”

“Well, I will join my parents at our law firm of course.”

That wasn’t the answer Reeva was expecting.

“Well, that is good. My mother likes a man with a plan.” Reeva cut in. “However, what she means is, plans aside your ambition. What you want to do in the next few months aside from your family business.”

Tony adjust his seat while running a hand through his hair. “Well, I haven’t actually given that a much thought but I don’t think there is any reason to discuss that right now. I don’t have anything to do right now but who knows, something can pop up tomorrow.”

Reeva sighed again. Now, she was getting angry but before she could say anything, he stood up.

“Don’t tell me you are leaving.”Mrs. Jones said, surprised at his sudden movement.

“Well, I am afraid, I would have to take my leave, Mrs. Jones. As I have said, I never had a prior knowledge about my coming here today. Right now, I am supposed to be somewhere with my mother and I would not want to keep her waiting.”

The woman smiled and stood up. “Well, it was nice to meet you, Tony, I hope that next time, we can have a quality time together.”

He nodded with a smile and Reeva saw him out of the house.

“Baby, I am so sorry... I wanted to surprise you and not to upset you.” Reeva said as they got to the car.

Instead, he smiled and bent to kiss her lightly on the lips. “ I am not offended at all, in fact, I am glad you did this.”

She looked surprised. “Really?”

“Yea.” He said, wide-eyed . “You just made me realize how important I am to you and that just gives me something to think about. I will give you a call baby.” With this, Reeva was relieved, her plan had definitely worked. She kept waving till the car drove out of sight until she finally returned to her mother.

“So what was that all about?” Tracy asked as her daughter stepped in.

“Nothing mum. I just wanted you to meet him, that was all.”

“You should have told him. That was a very bad thing to do!” The woman snapped at her.

Reeva sighed and sat on the couch. “I had to do that mum. I had to make him see how much I value this relationship and how much I am willing to go to the next level.

“Just because of something his mother said in a magazine?”

“No mum. Not because of that alone but because I want to make you proud by having that perfect wedding that father deprived you of. I don’t want to move into a house with a man without him meeting my mum and getting married to me first.”

This made her mother smile. “You deserve happiness baby but even though I want you to have that fairytale wedding that had always been your dream since birth, I want you never to force a man into giving you that. A man who never thinks you deserve such is not fit to marry you at all. Do you understand?”

Reeva smiled and nodded before finally embracing her mother

“So, how did it go?” Pristin asked after Reeva got back to her hostel that very night. Skybae was in her bed, pretending to be reading a novel but dropped it as Pristin asked the question.

Reeva gasped and collapsed into the bed. “I don’t know yet but I am hopeful.”

“What did you actually do?” Skybae asked.

Reeva stood up and opened her bag to bring out four candy bars which she passed on to her friends while keeping two to herself.

“Well, I took him to our house to meet my mum.”

The two friends gasped at the same time.

“You did what?” Skybae yelled.

“Well, I know it was a bad idea but how else would I have made him realize how committed I am to this relationship? He needs a committed girlfriend and that is why I am here.”

The other girls shook their heads but Pristin asked. “So, what did your mother say?”

“When she realized that he had no clue that he would be coming to our house, she rebuked him, that was after he had already left. I also promised not to ever do it again. But I am glad because, before he left, he looked deep into my eyes and said, I just made him realize something special between and that he was glad I did that. In fact, I won’t be surprised if he calls me tonight to meet his parents.” Reeva said, smiling excitedly.

“Well...” Pristin started, climbing down from her bed and coming to sit beside her.

“That was a stupid plan but I’m glad it worked for you.”

Reeva smiled and embraced her but they pulled away as her phone rang. She brought it out of her pocket and then gasped. She showed the screen to both of them so they could see that it was Tony before she picked it.

“Hi, baby.” She sounded as sweetly as she could.

“Hi, babe. Are you free tonight?”

At the question, she jumped for joy but quietly.

“Yes, I am. What is it?”

“I want us to have a dinner together at PICA, so I will send my chauffeur to pick you up by 8:30 tonight.”

Reeva almost creamed but kept still. “Ok baby, see you then.” Then she ended the call and finally began to scream.

“What is it?” Skybae asked, getting excited already.

“I will be going to PICA tonight. He is sending me his chauffeur in the next....” She checked the time on her wrist-watch. “Oh dear! That is in the next forty minutes. Girls!”

“Wow! That is super amazing. PICA is like one of the most expensive restaurants around this place.

. I am so happy for you. I think he is going to pop the question.” Pristin said excitedly.

“Well, then, we need to get ready on time!” Pristin screamed and quickly, the three rushed to the mirror.

** **

They ate in silence but she was extremely nervous and her hands were sweaty. Everyone in the restaurant ate quietly, some talked in low whispers but she could tell that everyone in the room was from a noble background, well except for her.

Tony was looking dapper in his light brown coat and he had actually complimented her as she got in. He stood upon seeing her, kissed her both on the cheeks, even though she would have preferred on the lips, but, it was okay. He had said she looked beautiful. That was fine also since her friends had used thirty minutes to get her ready.

Finally, he stopped eating and leaned back, she did the same.

“You are really beautiful.” He said again, wiping his mouth with the cloth on the table.

She smiled and muttered. “Thank you.”

For a while, he looked like he wanted to say something but stopped so she decided to talk instead, maybe it would give him the boost that he needed.

“Baby, I am so sorry about what I did today. I hijacked you, manipulated you and I am really so sorry. You are a wonderful guy and I am so lucky to have you, I just wanted you to know how much I treasure this relationship and how much I want things to work out for the best between us.”

Tony nodded, “I understand Reeva and that was why I arranged this dinner because there is something I need to do.”

Reeva nodded.

“Actually, I should have done this months ago and I appreciate all the efforts you put in to show how committed you are to this relationship and it is quite clear that I have not been as committed you have been.”

Reeva smiled. “It is okay baby. We can start afresh.”

“We both can start afresh because...I want...to break up."
