“Baby, this is beautiful. I am so thrilled.” Tracy said, taking her daughter’s hand in hers.

“I  just couldn’t wait to show you, mum. It is really beautiful.” Reeva cried.

“My daughter is finally getting married to her true love,” Tracy said, there were tears coming from her eyes.

“Don’t cry mum, you will be making me nervous.” Reeva joked.

“Well, you should that these are tears of joy.” Her mother said, cleaning her face with the back of her hand. “So, when is the wedding?”

“Well, I am thinking in the next three months so that we can have enough time to plan . Do you think it’s too far?”

Her mother smiled, patting her on the back. “This is your wedding my darling. You have a complete say over it.”

“Well, mum, I want us to do this together, you know how much I have been wanting this.”

The mother laughed. “Since you were three. You would always stand in front of the mirror, you would cover your head with one of my fancy scarves and hold some weeds in your hand. You were so cute.”

Reeva couldn’t stop laughing. “Well, I am obsessed with weddings and I am glad that I will be having mine

. So we need to start planning. Mum, you will be handling the food and the drinks and...”

“Hold on, what about Andy? Aren’t you supposed to be doing this together?”

“We will mum, but this has been a dream of you and I and I want to do it with you. Besides, Andy is so busy with the house and the arrangement...”

“Oh! Wait, does he realize that the ring means a wedding is bound to happen soon.”

Reeva laughed. “Who wouldn’t understand that? Of course, he knows.”

Tracy smiled and nodded. “Alright then. Do you know what just came to my mind?”

“What?”

“Many years back when you were just rounding up at the college and you told me that you wanted to go to law school.”

Reeva laughed. “I can still remember the look on your face. You looked like you were going to die mum.”

“Yes, totally! I thought you had gone crazy! I knew the heartbreak really affected you and I knew that you could come up with something unimaginable but going to law school was just one of the things I would never imagine you would come up with.”

Reeva smiled. “Well, you can see that it worked perfectly for me. I turned out great didn’t I?”

“You did. I am so proud of you. You are a successful lawyer, you are engaged and you are getting married soon. What more does a mother want?”

“Thanks for all your support and the confidence you have in me, mom, I know I was pretty tough when growing up but you stood by me. Even when I could have been totally humiliated by the breakup those years back, you comforted me. I have never taken anything so serious before and going to law school was just one thing you wouldn’t have supported me on but you did. You are a great mother.”

Tracy smiled and thought for a while. “Do you mind delivering such a beautiful speech for me on your wedding day?”

Reeva laughed. “ I will deliver even a better one.” She said before embracing her mother.

“So, how is your mum?”

“She was pretty excited when she heard the news. I just couldn’t wait to tell her baby.” Reeva said, lowering her bag on the couch and coming closer to Andy who was  sitting on the couch.

“You should have seen how her face lit up and ...” Reeva stopped and heaved a huge of relief, she looked happy. “My mother was really happy for me you know.”

“I bet she is.” He said, kissing her on the cheek while she rested comfortably against his strong body.

“Do you remember the stuff I told you that happened before I went to Boston?”

“You mean the heart break, Tony thingy?”

She nodded.

“What about it?”

She sighed. “Nothing. I and my mum were just talking about it yesterday and it just made me think.”

“So what were you thinking about?”

She waited for a while before replying. “I had gone to law school because I thought that I needed to prove to my ex how better I could be and maybe he could take me back.”

Andy chuckled. “Yea, I had called you stupid for that.”

She hit him on the arm before continuing. “Even though I had gone to Boston for a stupid reason, it turned out to be the exact thing that I needed for a better reason.”

“Which is?”

She leaned closer to him and stared deeply into his eyes. “Which is you my love. You are my treasure, you have given me the hope that I never thought could exist. You stood by me throughout, even when people took me for a joke.”

Andy smiled. “I am glad I did. You yourself were a sort of a drama queen then.” He said and they both laughed.

“It wasn’t easy for me to just adapt to a serious life okay? My life used to be such an open field and I had no clue of what I wanted. Well, the only thing I knew then was that I wanted to marry Tony and that was all. I had nothing else in my brain and look at me now. I am engaged to a successful lawyer, I am a successful lawyer and we are going to raise a beautiful family together.”

Andy frowned and looked serious. “We really came this far haven’t we?”

She smiled and nodded before they finally kissed and then pulled away as Andy’s phone rang. Reeva realized it was his dad.

“Oh!” She gasped excitedly. “Baby, can I speak with him please?”

Andy stood  up while the phone kept on ringing in his hand. “No love, not now.” He said, walking out of the room as he went to pick the call.

Reeva looked disappointed but she knew he was right. Now was not the right time. She would never forget what happened during his graduation party when he had invited her. She actually thought it would be best for her to forget but she just couldn’t. She had no plan to get drunk that day and she did. She vomited right in front of him. The feeling of shame and embarrassment that she had felt that day managed to crawl back into her tummy, sending her an unwanted feeling. She remembered everything.

Then---

That morning, after they finished the main graduation service at the school, , Andy had decided to take her home to see where he came from and some of his friends had decided to tag along since they would each be responsible for their flight tickets with their girlfriends .

When Reeva stepped out of the car, she gaped at the mansion that stood right ahead of her as if trying to intimidate her. For a while, she couldn’t utter a single word, even though he and his friends were still playing around, she stood there, drowning herself in the splendor of the mansion.

It was the first mansion that Reeva would ever enter. It stood proudly behind the tall iron gates, flanked on all sides by beautiful tall trees and ornamentals. A soft gurgling of clear water resonated from the delicate marble fountain which stood at its threshold. The water cascaded into a pool in the inner courtyard.

Her eyes were predominantly occupied with the bushes that were perfectly trimmed into shapes of animals, elephants, giant birds, horses...

“Hey babe!”

The sudden voice startled her that she jumped and his other friends laughed. There were three of them, Peter , Dre and Jay, each with their girlfriends, Annie, Loretta and Lola. They all graduated together and she was sure that the men were used to coming there unlike her and the three other ladies.

“Are you okay?” Andy had asked, putting his arms around her.

She smiled shyly. She had betrayed herself. “Yea, I am fine. I have just never seen such a huge house before. “ She admitted and then asked jokingly. “How much money does your father make in a moth exactly?”

Andy laughed. “Well, if I tell you I would have to kill you. Come on, it’s freezing out here.” He had said and they had all worked in.

Their butler had opened the door for them. He looked like someone in his early fifties, bald and all suited up with a red bow tie. He explained that he was the only one at home and that their housekeeper who was like a mother to Andy as Andy had later explained to her,  had gone visiting one of her children in Jos and his father wasn’t coming back that very day till the following week. With this, she had enjoyed herself, maybe too much than she should have.

It was meant to be a little party between the eight of them. They had brought enough wine, booze and music. She still regretted having drunk so much within the first hour because, the net thing she heard was that his father was around.

She thought it was a joke until the butler had to announce to them.

“Mr. Andy, your father with some of his associates just drove in.”

Immediately, Andy had rushed to the window and then rushed back to the music player.

“Oh crap!” He said.

Even though she was pretty drunk, she could understand what the word ‘associates’ mean.

“But you said he wasn’t coming today dude!” Dre had shouted.

“Yes, I wasn’t expecting him. Oh crap! Guys, we need to clear the room.”

Quickly, some of their friends started packing the empty bottles into the trash can.  For a while, she couldn’t do anything. Instead she found her way to the bathroom and stared at herself in the mirror.

This was a nightmare! She was still feeling tipsy. Quickly, she turned on the tab and splashed some cold water on her face. She needed to calm herself down.  She needed to make a good impression.

She shut her eyes and began to count from 1 to ten. She had just gotten to eight when a soft knock sounded on the door.

“Baby, do you mind coming out, my dad wants to meet you.”

She knew this was going to happen so she summoned courage, stared at her reflection in the mirror and faked a smile.

Some seconds later, Andy was whispering into her ear as they walked back to the lounge together.

“Do not panic. He won’t bite. Just say a hello, and that will be all. He only came here for a quick meeting.”

She kept nodding as they walked together and when they got to the lounge, she was surprised that the place was so clean as if nothing had happened. She found him talking to Dre and Jay who kept laughing, They were standing. There were no associates or whatsoever around, it was just the girls, maybe the associates were somewhere in one of the numerous rooms in  the house.

Reeva focus! A voice had said to her.

Then, it was like everything was in a slow motion as the man turned around and faced her.  For a while, she was able to breathe as she widened that fake smile and walked closer. He didn’t look so scary.

. He looked exactly how a busy, successful, businessman and a daddy would look in a black tux and shiny shoes and curly hair.

“Hi dear, I guess, you must be Reeva. “ He said with a smile.

She sighed and opened her mouth and that was when the shit happened...she vomited right in front of him, right on those shiny shoes that must probably worth a fortune.

OKAY TIME OUT!!

NOW

She shuddered at the memory. Andy was right, it wasn’t yet time for her to meet him, she alone hasn’t even gotten over the shame and embarrassment.

Seconds later, Andy opened the door and stepped back in.

“So how is he?” She asked.

“He’s okay. He wants me to come home.” He replied, sitting close to her.

“Hope there is no problem?”

“No, he just wants to discuss some important things with me.” He explained.

“So, when will you be going? What about your work?”

“I can explain to Fred, he will give me a time out, once I go on time I can come back on time. “

She sighed. “Well, so, when are you leaving?”

“Tomorrow hopefully. I’m sorry I can’t take you home yet love.”

“It’s okay.” She said quickly. “I think whatever time you want is okay by me.” She said with a smile.
Andy studied her for a while and then burst into laughter.

“What?” She asked, suddenly feigning ignorance.

“You are still embarrassed aren’t you?”

She shrugged, maintaining a serious face. “I don’t know what you are talking about.” She said, getting up, laughing and rushing out of the room while he ran after her.
