"Tell me something Neil" something is up with you lately" mum said standing in the doorway , her hands folded against her chest and wearing a simper. I thought for a while and having no clue asked "Speaking of?" "I have a feeling you are hiding something from your mother. And don't think you can fool me . That glow on your face every morning. There is something to it" she pointed out, coming into the kitchen where I stood waiting for the water to get boiled. "Mum" I called. "Ehe?" She queried. "It would save me a lot of time and stop me from getting to Mrs Ilo's late this Saturday morning if you cut the long talks and tell me what it is you mean" I answered, turning off the stove. "I'm simply trying to say that you are happy about something.... " she paused. "Or someone she finished up before I could defend myself. "Women never get tired of gossips. Do they?" I said, walking close to her and touching her jaw. She brushed my hands " men never stop trying to keep things from us" she shot back. "And my son is so grown up now, he won't even tell me everything anymore" she added and I gave a coy smile. "Keep it to yourself

I had got a little employment as a home tutor at Mrs Ilo's. And also had another JAMB to write in a few days. And so did Mia and Claire. We needed to study hard and pray better. Mia was bright enough and she wanted to study Optometry. I guess her eyes still fascinate her. Claire was my thick headed defensive lawyer all the way. we were different but we never let our differences get in our way.

"I heard results are out Claire" I announced over the phone. "Really, checked yours yet?" She asked. "I'm a bit nervous" I said masking my doubts with a laugh. "Come on. It won't check itself. I'm going right away. Leave yours until next year if you feel like" she teased. "And I thought you loved me" I faked a whine. "Who loves you? You better wake up, you re having a terrible nightmare" she said with a laugh as she hung up. " mum, you've got to see this!" I screamed as I ran into her room. "What's that" she asked, putting on her reading glasses. "I scored 260, cut off mark for mechanical engineering is 240. Not just that , my friends did well too" I said almost dancing. She smiled "oh come here my love" she said , spreading her arms to embrace me "I'm so happy. I'll never stop praying about it, OK?" I responded, nodding. After the screening examinations at the National University Nigeria. Our names were among those shortlisted for admissions to study our chosen courses. Isn't it funny how life seems fair to some people and dark to some others. It was Mia's first attempt but she got in. Claire and I had spent spent two years learning one handwork or the other not intentionally but to keep our minds from wandering off. But you know...... How time flies.....
