"After everything I put in. I tried my best. I did all I could! But no... I didn't get in, I'll have to wait a whole year because I've been rejected" I said in agony as I whined over my rejection to study mechanical engineering at the National university, Nigeria. "Neil, I didn't get in either. Some of us too" Claire consoled . "What about those who did?" I asked... Expecting no answer.. " "Its not your time, those who got in... Its their time. So don't blame it on yourself" she said trying to convince me. "Its the second Joint admission and matriculation examination I've taken, its painful and..." A knock came at the door and Claire offers to open it. " good evening ma" she greeted holding the sitting room door open and standing behind it for mum to walk in. "Evening Claire dearie. How are you?" She enquired. "I'm fine ma, its just Neil" she answered "What's with him?" She asked while taking off her shoes and sitting on the petite sofa. "He's trying very hard to frustrate himself because he didn't get an admission into the university this year" she answered folding her arms. Mum threw a glance towards me "I don't have a lot to say to you, but I just want you to know; everything happens for a reason

She put an arm around me asking "now where is that smile?" "Ohhh, mum stop" i almost screamed as she tickled me. Claire couldn't help but laugh too, my mum sure knows I can't resist laughing when I'm tickled . "Did you cook? I famished" mum said getting up. "Yes, I'll get it to your room and I'll see her off" I answered going to the kitchen ."you and this your best friend eeeh" she sighed as she got into the bathroom.

"Your mum is very funny" Claire commented as i walked her to the bus stop. "And annoying too" I added. "All parents are. Take it or leave it" she argued . I laughed "Can you believe my dad once said I'm an empty head. All because I refused to study mass communication at a polytechnic and.." she narrated while I sailed off in my imaginary boat as I got lost in thoughts trying to imagine what it would feel like to have a father. But was brought to a stop by the question "Neil, why don't you ever talk about your father " my countenance changed and in split seconds it went from smiling to forlorn , "because I don't have one" I said, stopping her a bus. "Hey, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have asked" she apologised . "Its OK. Do take care of yourself" I said waving. "You too" she replied, waving back.
