**** FIVE YEARS AGO.... 10:00PM

Arnold sat behind his laptop making sketches on a new house he had been contracted to design and build while his wife, Amanda lay in bed sleeping, at least that's what he thought until he heard her call his name almost in a whisper.

He turned but her eyes were closed so he turned his attention back to his laptop.

Few minutes later,he heard her call out his name, this time it was firmer.

He saved his work and shut down the laptop and joined her in bed,kissing her.

She didn't respond so he stopped and pulled back, staring into her face... There were beads of sweat across her forehead.

"Are you okay? Amanda?"

He asked touching her baby pumb and wiping the sweat off her face.

She felt hot.

He touched her forehead and neck, her temperature was high and she wasn't speaking.

"Baby are you okay?.... Talk to me"

he was alarmed.

"I don't feel well Arnold. I feel sick"

she whispered opening her eyes.

"I'll be back"

he rushed downstairs into the kitchen to get a bowl of cold water and a dry cloth and rushed back upstairs into their room.

He quickly dipped the cloth into the water,squeezed it and dabbed her forehead, neck and arms with it.

He did it continuously for a few times before resting the wet cloth on her forehead. He took her hand in his and kissed it but she didn't squeeze his hand like she usually did.

"Arnold... Take me to the hospital please."

She begged in a faint voice.

Arnold rushed to his wardrobe, grabbed a white polo shirt,slipped into it and carried his wife in his arms downstairs and out into his compound.

Upon reaching his car,he let her down slowly while he searched tirelessly for his keys but he couldn't find it.

"Damn it!!"

He swore.

He had dropped it in the living room and he couldn't go back to fetch it leaving Amanda, she seemed to be in pain and could barely stand on her own. She wrapped her arms around him for support while she bent a little.

"Musa!!!!!!"

Arnold shouted to his gateman.

"Musa!!!"

Musa growled, sitting up in his bed and yawning while he rubbed his eyes.

He had encountered difficulties in sleeping and now when sleep had come to him, his boss was calling for him.

He frowned and walked out of the boys quarters walking lazily towards the compound.

"Musa get my car keys from the living room. Check the dining table, near the TV set or the center table. Quick,I need to get to the hospital"

Hospital? Musa jolted out of his slumber when he heard the word and rushed into the living room.... As the clock continued to tick, the pain in Amanda's lower abdomen got worse and she would grip her husband tightly and bite her lips, preventing her from screaming.

She didn't want to make him more frustrated than he already was by screaming anytime the pain hit her.

She knew she wasn't going to survive this, the doctors had told her but it was already too late and abortion was out of the picture.

Seeing the joy on her husband's face the day they found out she was pregnant, she just couldn't tell him the truth, that it was almost 90% a threat to her life.

She knew Arnold loved her too much and that news was definitely going to shatter him.

Even if she had told him, he would have opted for an abortion,that she knew, but she wasn't ready to kill the child that had already began growing inside of her..... Amanda gripped Arnold tighter as another sharp pain hit her abdomen and she screamed this time, tears rolling down her cheeks.

"Amanda!!! Are you okay!!! Arrghh Damn it Musa!!!!! The keys!!!!! Can't you find it?!"

He yelled In frustration.

He bent down to hold his wife when fear suddenly gripped him.

He stared at the ground in horror, his eyes wide opened and his heart beating faster. 

There on the ground was blood, thick blood on the ground and in between Amanda's thighs was blood trickling down her legs onto the ground.

She was bleeding.

"No..no no.. This can't be happening!! Amanda!! Musa!!!! Arghhhh"

he cried out.

Musa rushed out with the keys and opened the back door.

Amanda had already passed out before he placed her at the back seat. Getting behind the wheel,he started the engine with his hands shaking and yelled

"Open the gate!!!"

He drove out of the compound in haste, fearing he would lose control of the steering wheel due to the manner at which he was shaking.

"Dear Lord save my wife and baby please!"

He prayed as he continued driving.......

AT THE HOSPITAL.... 10.30AM

Arnold followed the doctor into his office after he had instructed him to go with him.

No one had said a word to him since the previous night and now, the look he saw on the doctors face meant one thing : bad news.

He clasped his hands together,praying silently as the doctor offered him a seat.

"Doctor I'm getting impatient. How's my wife and baby?"

he asked after the doctor wasn't speaking close to a minute.

"Mr. Bempong,do you recall the fall your wife had some months back?"

He asked

"Yes doctor. She fell from the stairs. But why do you ask?"

He was getting confused as to where the conversation was leading.

"Well I had called her here, I mean your wife and told her the implications the fall had had on her and..."

"Wait. What implications? What are you talking about?"

The doctor looked quite surprised

"She didn't tell you?"

"Tell me what doctor? What do I need to know?"

He threw his arms into the air in exasperation.

"Mr. Bempong, I had told your wife the fall had had an impact on her internally and if she wanted to conceive, it should be after two or more months by then she would be healed completely and fit to conceive other wise getting pregnant soon will be very risky to her because pregnancy is a very delicate issue"

he explained. Arnold was staring, completely confused

"And?"

"She came here only a week later and told me she had been confirmed to be four weeks pregnant. I told her to discuss it with you to decide on whether to keep the child or not"

Arnold's mind drifted to how happy Amanda was at the news of her pregnancy and suddenly went sad. How she used to have frequent dizzy spells and abdominal cramps.

Christ!! Why didn't she ever tell him? Why? They could have found a way together.

"Can I see her please?"

"Sure but please don't stress her. Right now,we can't tell if she would make it alive or not but her vital signs shows there's some hope but I'm not assuring you" Arnold sighed and walked out,wiping a tear with his thumb and sniffed.......

"Hey baby"

he said lightly when he got into her ward and sat by her, taking her hands in his.

A caesarian section had been performed on her the previous night.

Her face looked pale with the mask that was covering her nose and mouth. She looked weak and drained of all energy.

Amanda opened her eyes to stare into her husband's charming face, his brown eyes that had always captivated her.

She smiled sadly,a smile she knew would be her last. 

She wasn't going to survive, she could feel it, she felt tired and wanted to close her eyes.

She blinked back a tear.

She knew if she closed her eyes now, it would probably be her last.

"I love you Arnold. So very much. The times I spent with you have been the best years of my life"

she whispered feeling her life getting sucked out of her.
