Rory:

BE CAREFUL OF WATSON.

I stare at the text on Amaya's phone for the umpteenth time then at the closed doors of the motel Amaya and her friend are currently in. I have been sitting in my car out here for hours. Ever since I got the text. Be careful of Watson. Who could have sent this to Amaya . it was an unregistered number and I already sent it to my people to get the information about who sent it together with other instructions about Watson.
My phone starts ringing on the passenger seat. I pick it up and connect without thought.
"What do you have for me?" I ask.
"Number belongs to a middle aged woman from Asaba." He pauses for effect while I wrack my brain. I don't even know where that is.
"It's a town in Delta State." He explains.
"That doesn't help me." I state drily.
"Here's the interesting thing about it. The message was sent from the city you live in. Two blocks from your new house and said woman whose registered to the number died two years ago."
"So how then did the text get sent?" I muse.
"My bet is the Sim card must have been stolen or something. I can't seem to trace it."
"Then it's a dead end?"
"I'm afraid so boss." I grind my teeth at this

. This doesn't help. I watch the motel's doors for a moment. All my instincts tell me to burst in there and take Amaya with me. But what do I tell her my reason is? That she's in danger because of me? How's she going to take that?
"Are you still there boss?" My attention is brought back to the call.
"What about the other matter I asked you to check out?" I ask.
"Watson came into the country just about the same time you sent for him. But..."
"But?" I goad him on impatiently.
"I was able to find out that he was here about a month before then. With an injured woman. No info about the woman though." My ears perk up at this.
"An injured woman you say?"
"Yes boss. According to my man at the airport, they helped Watson set up an ambulance which took his lady companion to an hospital here in the city. That's all I've got now." He says. My brain is still reeling from the very idea that's poking around in my head. It's unspeakable. Be careful of the one you wouldn't suspect, Watson had said.
"Follow up your search at the hospital. Keep me posted." I instruct.
"Sure boss. Anything else?"
"Did you check if Watson left this town today?" I wait with bated breath. He seems slow to answer.
"No, boss." My heart falls at the answer. Watson is still here. Does he know where Amaya is right now? I don't think it'll be hard finding it in this small place. My teeth hurt with how hard I'm grinding on them.
"Find him." I bark into the phone before ending the call. My eyes trail back to the closed doors of the motel. I'm not leaving till we find where Watson is hiding. He's not getting close to Amaya till I know what his deal it. Who the heck was the injured woman with him anyways?
I adjust the seat of my car to get as comfortable as possible. I place my head on the headrest and try not to fall asleep while watching the door. It's pretty dark out and quiet. It's to be expected as it's almost eight pm. Amaya should be asleep by now. I'm tempted to go around the motel one last time and make sure it's secure but I've already done that about four times today. I relax and let my brain run with various ways to make things right with Amaya and keeping her safe at the same time. It won't be easy.
A sudden noise of a door slamming shut jerks me off the car seat and I slam my knee into the steering wheel.
"Geez!" I groan as I rub my sleepy eyes. I can't believe I fell asleep! I don't remember when the last time I slept was actually so I can't blame my body. I lift my eyes off my hurting knee to the motel's doors. My eyes widen to find Amaya looking around suspiciously. I duck when her eyes sweep the spot my car is parked. What's she doing out by this time! I check the time on my phone. Past nine. I peek up to see she is tiptoeing away from the door. She isn't looking towards my direction so I let my body slide up the seat as I keep my eyes on her. She turns the corner and I quickly get out of the car to follow her. Taking the car would only alert her to my stalking by this time of the night so I take the better option of following her on foot.
She is walking fast now and I try to keep up pace. I'm walking too close instead of catching on that Amaya probably suspects being followed. She turns around suddenly and I have to stoop and pretend to tie my shoe lace to avoid getting caught.
I resist the urge to look up while she eyes me suspiciously for a while. I turn my body away from her and pray she continues on her way.
I feel her moving away and I finally let my head up. I release the breath I'm holding. That was a close one. Can't have her think I'm a creep following her at nine pm in the night. I let a minute pass before I stand up but then I can't see any sign of her. My heart picks pace. I run with my heart in my mouth and nearly start to yell out her name when I spot her green gown flowing against the night's breeze in the distance. My heart beat starts to steady itself when a dark figure comes out behind Amaya.
I find myself running towards her. I watch the dark figure stretch a hand out towards the unsuspecting Amaya and I scream her name.
"Amaya!" She turns around and the figure disappears out of sight just at same time. I run to meet up with a surprised Amaya. She's eying me up and down while I look around for the man in dark clothing. It's like he was never here.
"Are you stalking me now?!" Amaya snaps at me. I scowl at her.
"What the hell are you doing out alone by this time of the night!" I scream at her. She blink at me like I'm losing my marbles. Maybe I am. She's not aware of the danger around her!
"Don't yell at me. It's not your business for one and I don't want you following me like a creep!" She snaps back. Her cute nostrils flaring up. Her eyes tell me to yell at her one more time and see what she does. I'm afraid her anger only serves to make one certain part of my anatomy excited. I try not to make it obvious.
"I'm sorry." I mutter without really meaning it.
"Whatever. Just don't follow me." She says and starts walking off. I grab her hand at the last minute.
"What?!" I fumble for what to say. I don't want to scare her.
"I miss you." I say instead. I watch her features soften for a split second before it takes on a scowl.
"I told you I needed space." She says weakly but she's not trying to leave. It's a start
"Let me come with you tonight. I won't bother you. I'll say nothing." I ask. She falters for a while.
"Please." I stick my lip out and try to appear cute or something.

. I'm sure I look like an idiot but whatever. I'm not leaving her till she goes back to her motel room.
"You look stupid." Amaya says after a while and I grin that grin that always let me have my way with women in the past.
"Is that a yes?" I ask and she nods reluctantly. I can see she's trying so hard to hold back a smile of her own. I lift her hand up and brush a kiss across her knuckles just for the sake of touching her. She withdraws her hand with a sharp intake of breath that hits me below the belt.
"Where are you headed?" I ask to distract myself from her lips. She's currently biting hard on them.
"The next street for..." She looks away shyly.
"For?" She still doesn't look my way. She starts fidgeting with her hair.
"I am craving owo soup." She says and my mouth drops to the floor.
"Owor soup? You're walking around this late because of food?" I deadpan.
"Hello? You got me pregnant asshole. Don't blame me!" She snaps and start to walk on without me.
"Wait for me!" I yell after her as I pick up pace to walk beside her. She doesn't give me face so I nudge her playfully.
"I think a woman who likes food is sexy as hell you know." I say and she shakes her head.
"It's not even called owor soup." She mumbles and I chuckle beside her. Whatever it's called, I'm getting it for my babies.
