The fill-in wife - Episode 30

 

Rose:

"Just stay with him till he wakes up and when he does call me." I instruct the nurse before hanging up. It wasn't easy smuggling Nelson's body out of the hospital. I had to disguise myself as an ambulance attendant or whatever they are called without being caught by Derrick who was trying to console me. I've played the part of the grieving wife for the day and now all I need is to get home and have a hot bath . Maybe Derrick might want to join in. I literally roll my eyes at my subconscious thinking. I have to be careful how I act for now to avoid arousing suspicion. I want Derrick to pity me and then I can make him fall for me.
As for that maid he married, I've got the perfect thing to get rid of her. I smile down at the envelope in my hand as I remember how easy it was to get a hold of Derrick's marriage certificate. Just had to sign a few cheques and voila. I have ammunition against maidy wife. She most certainly won't be thrilled to see the highlighted clauses on the contract stating she has to leave in a year after getting paid off.
  I can already feel my goal within my grasp.
"Can you turn on the stereo?" I say to the taxi driver who does so without question.
"Turn up the volume." I say again as the fast beat of fire boy's latest hit 'jealous' vibrate through the car. How fitting right? I scream the lyrics out right along with fireboy and sway to the song without rhythm

. I can see the taxi driver looking at me through the mirror but I just grin widely at him. He must think I'm crazy.

"We are here." The driver announces few minutes later and I giggle.
"Thank you kind sir. Don't worry I'll make sure to make you a driver here after my wedding with Derrick okay?" I say to the perplexed man. He won't understand. I gingerly alight the cab then slip a few thousand naira bills into the taxi driver's palm.
"That was for the wonderful music." I say and he gives me a brown toothed smile. Okay, ewww.
"Goodbye madam." He screams after me as I sashay towards the mansion's doors.

The house is awfully quiet as I walk into and I wonder where everyone is especially Derrick. My phone's shrill ring tone startles me before I quickly fish it out of my bag. It's that stupid nurse.
"What?!" I bark out in annoyance as soon as I connect the call. There's silence on the other side of the line and I have to pull the phone away from my ear and check just to make sure the call was connected. It is.
"Hello? You better speak up now. I don't have time to waste on you." I snap. Still no answer. Okay, f*ck this.
"I'm hanging up." I spit out and go to end the call when an unmistakable laugh sounds out of the speaker. I nearly drop the phone.
"Who's this?"
"Rosey Rose." The cold voice send a chill down my spine and I find my self lost for words.
"N--el--s---"
"What? I can't hear you. Speak up wifey. you know how deaf a dead man can be." He says and bursts into more fits of laughter.
"No no no no." These are the only words I seem to be able to say and they are stuck on repeat on my lips.
"You're supposed to be incapacitated. No. I mean how did you get a phone?" I ramble.
"Make a wild guess." He enthuse.
"That f*cking nurse." I gasp in horror. The backstabbing bitch.
"Oh yes baby. I'm coming for you." His laugh hits my ear before the line goes dead.
No no no no. Why is he always one step ahead?! God! I can't believe this!
My phone alert me of a text and I look down to see a bloodied picture of what used to be a nurse.
"Ahhhhhhh." The startled scream leave my lungs before I can stop it as I slump to the ground.

Maya:

"I love you." The quiet whisper penetrate my sleep laden brain and I rouse a little. My eyes flutter open to be met by Derrick's beautiful smile.
"Hello baby." He whispers and I give him a smile of my own. This is just perfect. Just how I want to wake up every day. But what if this is all built on a lie? I mentally shut my subconscious up.
"Have you been watching me sleep?" I ask as I roll onto my side on the bed. Now we have just a few centimeters between us.
"Would that be weird?" He asks me and I nod.
"Pretty sure it's weird and bordering on creepy." I say
"Then yes. I've been watching you. It's my only creepy addiction." He says as he plants a soft kiss on my nose then both corners of my lips and I hum in deepseethed pleasure.
"You want me to kiss you here?" He asks as he nuzzles my neck. I'm lost for words. I nod weakly and he stops.
"I want you to say it." He brings his eyes up to meet mine and I see the playful glint in them.
"Come on. Say it. I want you to kiss my neck. It's pretty simple Maya." He says and I feel my face go red.
"Derrick." I pout and he shakes his head.
"That face isn't working this time. I want you to tell me what you want." He says. I open my mouth to try to get the words out but clamp them shut. Yup. I'll die of embarrassment.
"Fine then. It's about time for dinner. I better go get our food." Derrick says and starts getting off the bed. No!
"I want you to kiss my neck." I whisper and cover my hot face with my hand. I sounded stupid.
"That wasn't so hard now,was it?" My mischievous husband coos as he pulls me closer to him. He pulls both my hand off my face and grins.
"I love when you talk dirty my little innocent wife." He murmurs as he trails kisses all over my face then down my neck. I'm a pile of goo now. His kisses go down to my stomach and he pulls my top up just to peck my belly button.
"A kiss for my baby girl too." He whispers and I fall more in love with this man if that's even possible.
"I love you both." He says as his head comes up and he kiss me deeply.
"I love y---" My speech get caught off by a loud scream, making Derrick and I freeze in our kissing.
"Did you hear that?" Derrick ask after a few seconds of silence. I give him a small nod.
"Shhhh. Stay here okay? I'll just check to make sure everything is okay." He says and start moving off the bed but I grab unto his arm.
"Don't leave. It might be a burglar. it's dangerous."
"It's probably one of the cooks. Just stay here okay? I'll be right back." He says and leaves after planting a quick kiss on my forehead. A bad feeling settle down in my stomach and I can't help but feel apprehensive as he closes the door behind him.
Why am I even just sitting here? Derrick could be hurt. It's been so silent downstairs and he's been gone for a few minutes. Yup I should go check. I'm sure he wouldn't mind.
I quickly stand up and silently move out of the room. I try not to call attention to myself as I tiptoe downstairs. What I see is definitely not what I expected.
"Derrick!" I hurry down the stairs to meet him as he tries to bundle a motionless Rose off the floor.
"Hey. I think you should call an ambulance . I just found her like this." Derrick instructs and I nod anxiously. Is she dead? Oh my God.
"an ambulance . Got it." I start to hurry for the sitting room phone when I step on something. It's an envelope. Might be important so I grab it off the floor then continue on my way to get the phone. It doesn't take much time to locate the phone. Thankfully the hospital is on speed dial.
"Hello. We need help right now. A lady is unconscious in the living room and my husband is trying to move her to the couch and then he said I should call ambulance and then I did. And---"
"Maya! No need to call the hospital she's up! " Derrick yell to me and I  mentally and physically calm down.
"Ma'am. Are you still on the line? Ma'am?" oh I'm still on call.
"yes. I'm sorry. She's woken up now." I apologize to the Man on the line.
"Maya please bring a cup of water on your way okay?" Derrick yells to me again.
"Alright." I rush to the kitchen and try to pour some water into a glass. The document I even forgot about makes it pretty hard so I drop it on the table. In my hurry, I pour water on it. Oh no. It could be important. Stupid Maya. I hit my forehead as I mentally scold myself. I could just try to dry it. I pull the papers out of the envelope and inspect the damage. The papers look dry to me. I spread the papers on the table just to be sure and that's when I notice my name on one of them. No scratch that. On most of them. How didn't I see it before? It's boldly written in capital letters. Okay, I'm curious. I grab one of the paper and read through it. It's the contract Derrick had me sign few months ago. Wait,  I don't remember some parts highlighted with a red maker that day. I focus more on it and my heart practically drops into my stomach. Oh my God rose was right. I am just getting used. By the man I call my husband. The father of my baby. A strangled cry falls out of my mouth before I realize I'm crying.
"Maya. What's taking you so long?" Derrick's voice sounds so distant and I don't realize he's talking to me until his hand lightly touch my shoulder and I cringe then stagger away from him. I'm looking at him right now through my tears and all I see is a lying man.
"Hey. Are you crying? What's going on?" he tries to close the space between us but I move backwards away from him.
"Maya. It's Me. Derrick. What's going on? Talk to me.

. You are scaring me. Just let me touch you." he looks really distraught and I feel like bawling my eyes out. How could someone be so good at acting?it's disgusting. My eyes leave his And land on the incriminating papers on the table. He must have followed my eyes because he's staring at the papers as well. I caught you, bastard!
"oh God no." he says under his breath. Is he going to deny that?
His eyes come back to mine.
"Maya please,listen to me. It's not what you think. I--"
"No! "I yell and cover both my ears with my hands. I don't want to hear more lies.
" Baby please."
"I'm not listening to your lies Derrick. My God, I need to get out of here." I turn on my feet and flee the room
