The Emerald Chase - Episode 37

 

Darren kisses the sleeping Emerald on her cheeks and gets up.... He walks to the door opens it to step out when the faint voice came.

"Brother!"

He turns immediately to find Emerald awake, her eyes scanning the room and then resting them on the tube connected to her hands.. She lifts her head and sees him. . He was staring back at her.

"Darren.."

She whispers, her breath hitching as tears clouded her vision.. In a split second, he was seated at the edge of the bed, hugging her as she hugs him back holding on tightly..

"I'm sorry.. You must hate me so much don't you?"

He pulls back and peers into her face shaking his head.

"No... I could never hate you Emmie. I understand what my brother did to you was unforgivable.. I'm sorry he hurt you"

She gasps at the revelation and he nods, catching a tear that escaped her eyes with his thumb.

"I know everything.. Your brother told me.. I don't know about you but I'm willing to go far with you Emerald.. If you let me..I would help you forget your past.. I like you, no scratch that. I love you"

She grabs his shirt and pulls her to him as she kisses him.. He groans and kisses her back..

. You just regained consciousness"

he chuckles against her lips.

"What happened?.. Frederick.. He.. Umm. He.."

She trails off, panicking..

"Relax Emmie.. Nothing happened. You're fine"

She sighs in relief and hugs him.

"Is that a yes? To my proposal?"

"Well you haven't asked me properly"

"Ermm okay.. So should I get you flowers? Chocolates?. Errr.. Stay right here. Be right back"

he scratches his head and rushes out while she chuckles.

"Let go off me!! Where's that bastard. I will kill him!!! Where's he??!!"

Frederick walks away from the bar, a glass of tequila in his hand. Two men barge into the house, the security men following them

"Sir I tried to stop them"

One of them says

"it's okay.. My day couldn't get any worse"

he dismisses them and turns to the men, recognising one as his brother's bosom friend...

"That's him... Please take him away"

Steven says and two men in uniform enter.. They looked shocked for a moment when they realise it's chief Benson's son whom they were about to arrest.. Nevertheless, they had to.. Regaining their composure, they walk towards him as one of them takes out a handcuff.

"You're under arrest Sir"

One of them speaks up and handcuff him.. Frederick keeps mute and stares at Elvis and Steven as he was being dragged away...

Darren walked out of the shop with a box of chocolates, red flower petals and two packaged foods.. He was smiling excitedly while walking back towards the hospital when he sighted Steven and Elvis from a distance.. Steven was holding out pieces of papers to him and they seemed to be arguing about something... He moved closer and was about to tap them to get their attention when two out of the five papers Steven was holding slipped and fell.. Darren bent and picked it up.

"Err Stev...."

He trails off when they resumed talking still unaware of his presence.

"I know I shouldn't pry into your private issues but I can't keep quiet about this Elvis. It concerns my friend.. Why do you have this picture?"

Steven asks in a hushed tone

"I dont want to talk about this please"

"Too bad man!! Because you aren't leaving here till you tell me what you know unless you want Darren to find out?"

At that, Darren's curiosity grows and he glances at the papers he picked up.. They were pictures.. The first picture was a man smiling. He seemed to be in early thirties. The second one caught him unawares and he was taken aback... He dropped the items on the floor and gasped.

Alarmed, Elvis and Steven turn to find him standing behind them, his face pale..

"Darren listen."

Elvis begins

"Explain this... What is this!!"

He asks almost yelling.. Elvis sighs. He didnt want the truth to come out like this until his revenge was over.. He glanced at the picture..

"It's... Its nothing."

"What in the devil's name do you mean by it's nothing huh.. You think I'm blind... That...."

He pauses pointing to a little boy seated on the bed in the picture, crying

"Is me when I was four years old.. That's me.. And that woman is my mother...

. She's dead in this picture and there's a man standing near her with blood all over his hands and a knife in his hands... The same knife with which my mother used to slice oranges for me anytime I wanted them... I don't need a soothsayer to tell me that man with his back turned is my father!! That's my father damn it!!!"

He screams, his eyes red..

"Darren relax please... Let's talk amicably please"

Steven says

"To hell with talking amicably!.. All my life I was told my mother died from an accident... My father sent me out of the country when I was barely six.... I've always known my mother never had an accident but this? No!! never in my wildest dreams did I think my mother was murdered. Much less by my dad!! My own father!!!! I hope this is a dream because if it isn't then you better start talking... Start talking!!!"

Darren yells grabbing Elvis by the collar, his eyes dark with so much anger.. Elvis knew he couldn't hide it any longer.. Sooner or later, he will still find out anyway...

"F*cking start talking Elvis!! Damn it!!!!"

Darren sneers, his eyes blazing.
