The King

 

My door slams open and then closed, The Dukes scent immediately filling the room.

"I came as fast as I could" He is  saying as he slowly walks to the center of the room.

"You don't have to walk like I'm gonna pounce on you, the worst of it has passed" I say, taking a sip of my drink, staring into the fireplace. 

I feel his body rest all the way from where I'm seating and I know the worst of it hasn't passed at all.. Not at all.

It won't be long now until I can't stand to hear his heart pounding

"What's happening? Should you be having a spell by this time? With the coronation so close? It isn't even close to a full moon!" He says, worry colouring his tone.

 

"I don't know what has changed Harry, I just know that I am having a spell" I say, leaning back, cracking my neck, my eyes wanting to fall close.

 

It's never easy when I go into this mode. . 'Beast mode' as princess Sophia used to call it, but these days it's getting worse, I suddenly can't function better.

 

"Isn't it time yet Niko? Isn't it time for you to be free? You've suffered for a long time... You.."

"It won't make any difference to talk about the past Harry, just be around until the coronation, let's make sure it goes off without a hitch" I say and he nods, I know he does even though I can't see him.

"The girls?" I ask.

"Gabriel got someone to sign a contract, they should be fine for now"

"Who is she?"

"Haven't seen her but I did read her resumé, She owns an agency and she looks like she knows what she is doing, she has two kids too, a divorcee"

My mind conjours an image of an old lady before it wipes off.

"That's good, keep them safe until the coronation, then we decide what to do"

He pauses, sighing.

"What do you want to say?"

"Aren't you at least going to see the Princesses?"

"They have you"

"But they need you, they should get to know their guardian, at least" he says, this conversation one we've had many times.

I turn to look at him, he flinches when he gets a look of my eyes.

"What do you want me to say to them Harry? Do you want me to hurt them? Maybe drain their life from them and then what? Tell them I'm their uncle?"

"You have a better handle on your powers than that, you should give yourself more credit, we both know if you want to be in control of the demon you can.

. You just don't want to make that extra effort" He says, his tune accusing..

This makes me stand, my body heavy with lethargy but never the less pissed at my brother.

"Make an effort? Did you say make an effort... What effort do you want me to make? An effort in killing them and then knowing for all eternity that I had a hand and in killing my nieces?! Is that it?"

"Well, you haven't killed me have you!"

"I'm seriously debating that!"

"Stop sulking in your room all the time Nikolai! Get out....just stop working for too long and actually start living!"

"Maybe you should have been there to tell our parents that when they decided to make a deal with the devil!" I shout, my hand sweeping the chair in front of me, making it hit the wall and shattering"

"Nikolai..."

"Get out!"

"Nik.."

"Get the fuck out and make yourself scarce" I say, knowing very well my eyes are glowing and that I must look like a mad man.

"I'm sorry man" He says, his tone subdued 

"Just leave" I say, seconds away from breaking down.

He understands, picking his way through the debris dump that is my room, exiting it and shutting the door.

Anger suddenly fills me as I hit a fist on the table making it split through the center.

"Fuck!"

 

The Queen. 

 

A roar from somewhere in the castle startles me and I spill the tea I'm holding, I look around at the eerily quiet room and the Princesses are looking towards the stairs, fear in their eyes. 

"What is  it?" I ask

That seems to snap them out of their daydream, Sofia glances at me looking away without a word. 

Sigh. 

 

If I thought I would quickly fall into a routine I was kidding myself.

When Sofia said they were going to tolerate me she meant making my life a living hell.

 

She refuses to follow instructions, she refuses to help me with her sisters, she refuses to do everything... I'm sure if I told her to breath she will refuse to do so too.

 

I got here a day hours and I'm wondering already if that amount of money is actually worth this stress..

Then again I can't blame them, I know how it must feel loosing both parents and then suddenly have an unfeeling person looking out for you.

I stand up to go wash my cup in the kitchen. 

 

"Luna!" A voice which I'm sure is Penny's calls before I even take a step. 

I stand up from the dining where I'm supposed to be sipping my calming tea to go answer to the youngest princess.

She's five, you would think she won't be that hard to handle.. Think again..

"What's up?"

"Mandy says the earth is round.. Tell her she's wrong" how do I dispute a scientific fact I know to be very correct?

"The earth is infact round Penny" I say slowly.

Her eyes twitch and I know what's coming, the inevitable screaming of a child who did not get her way..

"Don't scream brat, you know I'm correct" Amanda mutters and I wonder why she always looks so subdued.

"Wait!" I shout when Penny gears up to scream.

She pauses..

"Can I bribe you with a cookie?"

"Cookie?"

"Chocolate chip cookies?" I ask and Amanda shifts with interest, even Sofia pauses from tapping away at her phone..

"With a bit of caramel? You can even help me mix the dough" I say.

"Really?!" penny screams the question 

"Yes!"

"Okay" she says, swinging up and racing towards the kitchen.

Amanda looks at me with suspicion.

"You can help if you want to"

"No thank you" She says and I nod, I will take what I can.

I raise my head to see Sofia looking at me and I throw her a smile, she huffs and looks away.

Apparently skincare products weren't enough to buy her.

 

I pad to the kitchen, wondering why it feels like a battlefield anytime I'm around them.

I place Penny on a high chair, giving her a glass of milk as I try to find my way in the kitchen.

The doors open and I know Sofia and Amanda has stepped in, I don't turn, no need to acknowledge them.

I find everything I need as the pantry is fully stocked and I turn to grab an apron on a hook.

"Don't!" Amanda screams, grabbing the apron from me.

"What in..? " I ask, baffled..

"This was my mum's, you don't touch it!" She screams and I nod, my heart breaking for them.

"I'm sorry, I wasn't aware of that" I make a mental note to get an apron on my next day off.

"I wil just prepare these without an apron" I say, explaining myself.

They don't say a word and I know it must be hard seeing me in the kitchen their mum once used.

Poor things.
