“Wow! It’s here again. It’s the 8th edition of Olympiad, your favourite mathematics TV quiz show, where you get to watch amazingly brilliant secondary school students solve mathematics on their feet. It begins on Saturday, 4th of August and ends on the 3rd of November. To get live updates on the competition, stay tuned with us on Monday evenings, from 6 PM to 7PM. Do not miss it.” – This was the advertisement Ayo heard and saw as she turned on the television on Friday morning, a day before the competition. She collapsed on a chair as she saw the stage setting, the quiz master and the audience, the light on stage; the student’s excitement, disappointment and tears. She wished she could just back out but there’s no turning back now.
‘I have to see this till the end’ – she sat up – ‘I must win the gold medal in this mathematics Olympiad. I must be the shining star of my school.’
