“I now know why she’s smiling and using her fingers to stroke her cheeks,” Adura said.

“Why?” Perfect demanded.

“She’s actually crying and using her fingers to wipe the tears.”

“You don’t mean it.”

“She’s right,” supported Al-ameen.

“I don’t blame her,” Perfect shook her head.

“Oh! No No,” Emmanuel lamented. “0.96 seconds?”

“That was really fast,” Funmi said giving her opinion without been asked for one.

“Yes.” Oreoluwa agreed with Adura . “I can now see her tears. She’s really crying. I really feel for her, our differences apart.”

The whole Nightingale students present at that day’s competition were filled with surprise when the quiz master called Ayo’s name instead of telling her average response time.

“What nonsense question is he asking her now?” Funmi said, agitated by the quiz master’s question. “Who cares if we call her Ayo or Mide?”

“Take it easy Funmi,” Perfect advised.

Oreoluwa looked surprised. He faced Funmi

. “And I don’t remember when you became friends.”

“We get along,” Funmi said quickly.

“She sees you as her helper not friend,” he stressed.

“I guess she would be watching now as I tell you that you have…” – the quiz master was saying – “qualified for round 2. Your average response time is 0.95 seconds which is impressive.”

Ayo became relieved when she heard the quizmaster’s final statement, so were her classmates.

A deafening applaud could be heard from the audience.

. Ayo was glad. She watched as Princewill left the stage with tears in his eyes. She felt for him but there was nothing she could do. Within herself, she wished him well.

“Welcome back for round two of this amazing and wonderful first prelim stage of the 2018 Mathematics Olympiad,” the quiz master announced after Anu and Bode came back on stage. “With me here on stage are Anuoluwa from First Apex Schools, Ayomide from Nightingale Academy and Olabode from Soundhope Schools.” He smiled at the audience. “They are the lucky 3 that have made it to round two among the first six contestants and now one more needs to be disqualified to have our two contestants that will qualify for the semifinals.”

“Esteemed audience, it’s the 60 seconds of fame.” He rubbed his palm together as though that’s where the questions were going to drop from. “Anuoluwa, you are up first.”

Anu nods her head.

“Okay, are you ready for your Olympiad 60 seconds of fame?”

“Yes, quiz master.”

“Your Olympiad 60 seconds of fame starts now.” He read out, “The sum of two consecutive …”

As soon as the quiz master started reading the first question for Anu, Ayo was carried away in her own thoughts. ‘Is she the one? No! I doubt it. She’s just a look alike with the same name. How I wish I heard her surname,’ she thought while staring at Anu.

“Ayomide, are you ready for your Olympiad 60 seconds of fame?”

Ayo was jolted back to reality when she heard the quiz master’s question.

‘Ayomide, are you ready for your Olympiad 60 seconds of fame?’ she replayed the question in her brain. “Yes, quiz master,” she eventually answered.

“Remember, whatever you score here will be added to your score in round 1.”

“Yes, quiz master.”

“Okay, your Olympiad 60 seconds of fame starts now.”
