I Remember Now
Back at home. On Monday evening after Saturday’s quiz show.
“Hey, Ayo!” Bukky called out. “Did you notice how that girl kept looking at you?” She asked without turning to look at Ayo, instead she was focused on the TV and pointing at it.
“Which girl?” Ayo asked curiously. She looked up from the mathematics handbook she was reading.
“The one in blue striped uniform.”
“There were many girls in blue striped uniform that day.” She looked back at the book . “Which…”
“The one competing against you,” Bukky interrupted. “What’s her name again?” She frowned, trying to remember. Just then she heard from the TV – ‘Anuoluwa, you made it to the semifinals.’
“Look, it’s that girl,” Bukky said anxiously, tapping Ayo repeatedly and pointing at the TV at the same time. “She’s the one. Her name is Anuoluwa.”
Again the TV screen displayed: Anuoluwa Lawal, 125 pts.
“She was staring at you throughout the quiz show.” She faced Ayo. “Any idea why?”
Ayo looked up at the TV screen. She wore a puzzled look

. “I don’t know.” She looked back at her book.
“Ayo!” Bukola called again. “What was it like?”
Ayo was becoming infuriated by Bukky’s disturbance. “What was what like?”
“Stop pretending. You know what I’m talking about.”
Bukky nodded her head slowly without taking her eyes off the TV. “Oh! I see. You are trying to avoid my question.” She turned her whole body to face Ayo. “Don’t tell me you were afraid at that moment when…”
“Okay!” Ayo screamed. “I was afraid. So what?” She stood up to leave.
“Come back here joor.” Bukky dragged her friend back to her seat.
“What is it again?” Ayo said angrily.
“Oooh!” Bukky exclaimed excitedly. “Look at how beautiful you are on screen and that smile on your face at that moment when the quiz master called your name.
“Ayomide, I can see you are smiling. Can I know the reason?” Bukky mimicked the quiz master. Ayo couldn’t help but laugh now. The frown on her face had vanished.
“You really know how to make me laugh,” Ayo said happily. “Bukola, I was really afraid. I thought I would be disqualified.”
“Tell me. Why were you smiling?”
“To be honest with you. That was just to conceal my fear and tears.”
“You mean you were crying to…”
“Uhm.” She nodded her head.
“Wait a minute.” Ayo stood up from her seat and ran inside her room. After what seemed like ages to Bukky, she came back with a picture in her hand and gave it to Bukky. “That girl was my classmate in Basic 5” – she pointed at the girl that was displayed on the TV screen – “she was the one I told you about from my basic classes.”
Bukky looked at the picture in her hand, then at the TV screen.

. “Is this the same Anuoluwa on TV?” she asked.
Ayo simply nodded her head as she watched the TV screen with renewed interest.
“But she looks shorter here.” Bukky was surprised. She was referring to the picture. “And her hair…”
“She must have cut it.”
“Yes. She looks more beautiful.” Then she added as an afterthought, “But you said she transferred to Soundhope or something.”
“I’m surprised as you are.” She looked back at Bukola. “The only reasonable explanation is that she left Soundhope and enrolled at First Apex for her JS 1.”
“The new haircut and the height explains why you didn’t recognize her before.”
Ayo nodded her head again.
“But she should have recognized you” – Bukky looked back at the picture – “You don’t look different in this pics.”
“I guess that’s why she keeps staring at me.” Ayo nodded her head. “I knew I’ve heard the name before. Anuoluwa Lawal.” She recalled. “The name rang a bell when she introduced herself. That was why I kept looking at her also.”
“Even after hearing the name, you couldn’t remember?”
“Obviously.” Ayo sighed and sat on a chair. She looked up at the TV screen. “At least, I remember her now.”
