Beautiful Mask - Episode 17

Simon:

For three weeks now, i have been a walking shell of my former self. No

more parties no more fun. Caroline got so under my skin in just about

a week, that i was willing to change for her. I was willing to drop

the womanizing and alcohol. To settle down. Here in Nigeria. Turns out

i was being fooled all this while. Who would have thought. Sometimes,

the wolves appear in innocent sheep's clothing. Somthing tells me to

talk to her and get everything straight from her mouth. Maybe she is

just being set up. But that's just my heart speaking. Talking to

Caroline would only prove my stupidity. Fool me once shame on her but

fool me twice, that a big shame on me. The one million naira in her

account is the obvious evidence that she was with me for money. All

the women i have encountered since i came back to this country has

been after my money and i am tired of it. Well, except Beatrice.

Atleast i know what she wants from me. Love. I am not sure i am

capable of love anymore but that is her loss. She wanted this so bad

that she resorted to blackmail. Now, i am going to get married to her

as soon as possible to get rid of all the gold diggers in my life.

Speaking of Beatrice. She has been acting strange for about a week

. She doesn't seem as enthusiastic as she was before. I feel like

she is avoiding me. Well, i don't really care if she is but my mom

wants to meet her so she better shape up. I should probably call her

again, maybe she'll answer this time. I dial her number but its

switched off. Why is her phone switched off this early?. I check the

time to see that's its half past nine. Wow, i cant believe i stayed in

the office till this time. Work has been a way to take my mind off my

problems this past few days. Which is weird because i didn't want to

be here in the first place but now i am beginning to love working

here. Its late now so i have to leave before i get locked in. I grab

my car keys and my suit jacket and head downstairs. Few minutes later,

i am already driving home. I hum to the tunes of 'perfect' by ed

sheeran which is playing on my stereo as i drive along my street. Its

really dark apart from my headlights. Power supply must have been cut

out of this area. Its not unusual for this country unlike the states.

I come to a sudden halt when i see a car parked across the road. The

car's bonnet is open and i can see a man standing in front of it. The

street's road isn't wide so i cant get through. I honk my horn at the

man and he points to the car and waves his hand in the air gesturing

for me to help him push it off the road. I get out of my car

reluctantly and walk to the man. I cant help but think that this could

be a trick to rob me or kidnap me. The guy looks young though.

Probably 18 years so i can handle him. The fact that i left my wallet

and phone in the car  which i left open and running put me at ease

too.

"what's wrong with the car?" i ask as soon as i get to him.

"I don't know man. It just won't start. Help me take it off the road

so you can drive through" i take my jacket off, place it on the roof

of the car and move to the back of the car to give it a push while he

mans the steering wheel. I hear an engine rev and i sigh in relief but

before i can grab my jacket from the top of the car, the car zooms

off. with my car. I stare in shock as both cars disappear into the

darkness. I cant believe i have been fooled yet again. My phone and my

car gone! Shit shit shit! My luck is really bad these days. Thank God

i am not hurt though. The only thing hurt is my pride. Fooled by an 18

years old boy. His accomplice cant be much older than him. Why didn't

i see the other person?. I didn't expect them to be two. There are no

taxis here so i am forced to trek the remaining distance home.

Caroline:

"What does the result say doctor? Its just the flu right?" i ask the

doctor who i am currently sitting in front of. My mother's doctor

finally discharged my mother two days ago and we are back in warri. I

didn't want to go home and face chinedu so i have been sleeping at

favour's house since i got back. I take care of my mom at our house

during the day then go back to favour's house to spend the night.

Thankfully, i haven't encountered chinedu. My dad said he hasn't been

home for more than a week. This is normal for him though. He just

comes home anytime he is broke. Favour already knows about simon's

betrayal and has been trying to cheer me up. I pretend to be happy but

when no one is looking, i cry myself to sleep. Last night, favour saw

me puking my guts out in the bathroom but i told her it was probably

just malaria fever. For the past one week, everything has been making

me nauseous especially strong smell and i chucked it up as signs of

malaria. When favour caught me vomiting again this morning, i told her

about it. She is the reason i am here in the hospital. She thinks it

could be more than fever and insisted i get tested.

"There is no trace of malaria in your blood" the doctor says.

"that means i am fine right?"

"you are perfectly fine. Just pregnant" my eyes goes wide with shock.

"Oh no. That cant be true" i whisper

"are you alright miss? You look pale"

"am fine." i am so not fine. This is a disaster. I am carrying simon's

child and he is getting married to another woman. My phone starts

ringing and favour's name pops up on the screen.

"hello, Caroline. Have you gotten the test results?" she says as soon

as i pick up.

. The worry in her voice breaks me and i burst out in

tears.

"I am pregnant favour. What do i do?. Simon would not want it" i ramble

"its his child so he better want it. You are going to tell him right?" she asks

"i don't think so"

"why not? The guy is loaded. Your baby won't lack a thing. You must tell him"

"we don't need his money. I would take care of my child myself."

"Where would you get the money?. You are jobless right now. And

probably homeless. Plus, its his right to know" she reasons

"okay, I'll tell him. But just because its his right"I can't talk to

Simon right now so I just send him a text

Caroline- we need to talk its urgent.
